Essential travel only advised - can I still go on holiday to the Canaries?

Travel to the canaries is currently advised as Essential Travel Only.

Can I still go on holiday though if I isolate on my return? How does anyone know if my travel is essential and who decides what constitutes essential?

OP posts:

A holiday isn't essential but it is just advice, not law. Legally OP can go.

This is so depressing

ChasingRainbows19 · 16/10/2020 23:07

I’m surprised other countries want people to go from the U.K. to be honest.... the case levels are spiralling much higher than places we’ve put under a return quarantine.

amicissimma · 16/10/2020 23:12

Madeira and the Azores aren't on the restricted list. Would one of them do?

Stilllovehim01 · 17/10/2020 04:12

Stop being a twat
Hope this helps

I suggest you look up the word essential.

I suggest half the people on this thread look up the word 'advise'. Also, OP asks if she can go on holiday right now, not if she should. To which the answer is yes (or maybe, if you're in tier three). So long as you pass the temperature check and provide your details upon entry. You won't be required to self-isolate once you're there.

I wouldn't mind visiting the Canaries myself right now, if it weren't for the 14 day quarantine on return. Plus a lot of flights are being cancelled at the moment and quite a few hotels are closing as it's so quiet out there. And there's the travel insurance issue. If you were to book something at the moment, I think it would be best to do it very last minute.

@Snog

I see so effectively I can make up my own mind as to whether to go and it's all legal as long as I self isolate on return.
You can go, but may not be covered by insurance as are going against advice.

You can, but you might want to check out the news story about the woman who got randomly covid tested at the airport in Greece. I've no idea if they are doing this elsewhere but she ended up imprisoned in a dive of a hotel for two weeks surrounded by cockroaches as she tested positive (although she has no symptoms)

The Canary Islands, and Spain as a whole, are heavily dependent on foreign tourism. And Brits make up the biggest chunk of those visitors. Tourism accounts for 35% of GDP and 40% of jobs in the Canaries, so I imagine most people out there are desperate for us to come back.

Aridane · 17/10/2020 07:24

Yes, of course you can - it’s advisory only

Oh goodness that was a whingefest of an article in the Daily Mail

Yes it was a typical daily mail story but it was all true (I know the family) They had negative tests just before they went (as required when travelling to Greece) and just got randomly picked out at the airport for testing.

Dowser · 17/10/2020 10:45

Oh yes it is
Oh no it isn’t

@Untangled87

I might be wrong, but I think a lot of hotels are reopening.
There was a schedule of reopening..some not till December

I shall let you know.
I’m presently enroute to the airport

Feellikedancingyeah · 17/10/2020 15:26

Up.to.date travel advice is all on Gov.Uk website

Aridane · 17/10/2020 18:33

Actually the advice isn’t that helpful (hence the OP posting) as some of it is advisory only (eg not travelling) and other bits mandatory (quarantine on return). Plus they can be slow to update and not a,ways accurate when summarising other countries’ entry requirements

Aridane · 17/10/2020 18:34

(Referring g here to the gov.uk advice referenced by the above poster)
