Tier 2 car sharing?

girlicorne · 13/10/2020 01:09

We are in a tier 2 area. I am meant to be taking my son and some of his friends to an outdoor activity over half term. As I understand it indoor mixing is not allowed but outdoor is ok as long as we are less than 6 which we will be. We were all meant to be going in my car however which I assume will be banned under the new restrictions as it is ‘inside’? Thoughts? I don’t want to break the law but I don’t want to cancel if we don’t have to!

I thought car sharing was not advised at all.

AlwaysLatte · 13/10/2020 02:13

Can his friends' parents not take them so it still goes ahead? If you can't meet indoors then obviously not in a car.

I’m in a Tier 2 area. We’ve had local restrictions for a few weeks. I drive my colleague home each day. We’re both secondary school teachers. Quite frankly I feel safer with her in my car with the windows open that being in front of 150 pupils each day in small rooms where the windows don’t open.

WearyandBleary · 13/10/2020 07:00

I didn’t think car sharing was allowed anyway.

ComDummings · 13/10/2020 07:02

You can get taxis, ubers and buses even in tier 3 areas so I don’t see why car sharing should be banned? Windows down, masks on. Obviously I don’t know what the actual law on that is, I believe the details will come out Wednesday?

middleager · 13/10/2020 07:04

I'm also in a tier 2 area with restrictions.

I drive my son and his friend to school and the other boys' mother does the return trip.

I can't pick my son up myself due to work and picking my other child up from school 7 miles away in a different LA so
It's either that or a rammed bus with some not bothering with face masks.

labellesusage · 13/10/2020 07:13

Tier 2 here as well. Meant to be going on an organised trip with my daughters. Both live in their own homes. We are in a bubble. We have spoken about it an agreed face masks and windows open.
One daughter I work with. It's about using your common sense. The place we are going to is outside .

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/10/2020 07:23

Its not allowed.

Digeridont · 13/10/2020 07:36

Car sharing has been ‘avoid if possible’ for months. Personally, I feel safer on train as there is a lot more space between people.

The guidance is here (click on private cars, scroll down to car sharing):

ineedaholidaynow · 13/10/2020 07:40

@labellesusage how are you in a bubble?

starfish4 · 13/10/2020 08:05

I wouldn't be car sharing in any tier to be honest. If you really have to do it, masks in for everyone, windows open and clean car before and after.

labellesusage · 13/10/2020 08:39
@labellesusage how are you in a bubble?
Because 1 daughter I work with
2nd daughter has mental health issues.
Hence we have a bubble .

labellesusage · 13/10/2020 08:44

Will add the daughter with MH attempted suicide 3 times and was sectioned just before lockdown so no way was I leaving her to her own devices for 6 months.
I did what was best for my family in that time

AlexaShutUp · 13/10/2020 08:45

You can only be in a bubble with both of your daughters, labellesusage, if you are a single adult and they live together in one household. Otherwise, you're just breaking the rules.

ChaChaCha2012 · 13/10/2020 08:48

There are and still will be exemptions for those who would be at risk without support. Label's daughter would fall into that category.

myhobbyisouting · 13/10/2020 08:51

Yes but the daughter she works with doesn't

Sparklingbrook · 13/10/2020 08:53

I don't get how car sharing is not advised but I keep seeing driving instructors side by side with their pupils with masks on.

bintang · 13/10/2020 08:54

I don't think my area is in any tier. We have been car sharing with DD's best friend because they are in the same class at school and sit next to one another all day. I do drop in the morning, her dad brings them home at 3.
They are literally with one another all day. Are we not supposed to car share?
They sit in the back with each other, obviously the drivers/adult is in the front.

myhobbyisouting · 13/10/2020 08:54

@Sparklingbrook they are working.

Sweetchillijam · 13/10/2020 08:54

No to car sharing. DH used to car share to travel to work, but now they can’t and are all WFH.

I am sorry about your daughters MH but I thought you could only bubble with one daughter (and thats only if one of you are from a single person household, or both your daughters live together and you live alone)? My mum has been recently widowed but lives with my brother so neither my sister or myself can bubble up with her which is really hard. Or have I got it wrong?

myhobbyisouting · 13/10/2020 08:55

@bintang seriously? Confused of course your area has a tier!

Sparklingbrook · 13/10/2020 08:57
@Sparklingbrook they are working.
Yes, I don't see how that makes a difference unless COVID knows that and leaves them alone!

ineedaholidaynow · 13/10/2020 09:00

All areas will have a tier. Our schools have asked children to wear masks in the car if they are in a car share

myhobbyisouting · 13/10/2020 09:01

What do you suggest then? That nobody works? Or that every human on the planet leaps into a car with people from multiple households simply because it is necessary for driving instructors to do so? Hmm
