Anyone been notified by NHS App of a positive contact

Just interested to know if anyone has received notification via the NHS App that they have been in contact with a confirmed case and been advised to isolate. With so many people having downloaded the app and cases on the rise I would expect there to be some people that have been notified via the app by now Hmm

How does it actually work? I downloaded the app & know for a fact that I have been in contact with people who have tested positive recently. I’ve had no notifications.

Poetf · 08/10/2020 20:24

@itsgettingweird

Not yet.

I have the contact tracing switched off most of the time.

Not because I'm selfish but because I go to work and ds swimming club and they have their own systems!

I always use the venue check in.

I switch in contact tracing if generally out and about.

I would isolate if asked or advised to.

The sooner everyone complies the sooner we can get this under control and our lives back to more normality.

Tell us more about these systems Hmm

I deleted it the day I downloaded it as it gave me an annoying pop up everytime I turned my Bluetooth off which I have to do or it interferes with my car radio.

I will continue to sign in at cafes and restaurants instead.

As I understand, it isn't illegal to ignore the app but it is illegal not to isolate if contacted by track and trace.

They would have to have the app too, have contact tracing switched on, abs have uploaded their test results I think?
Yorkshiredolls · 08/10/2020 20:36

Ive had of those “exposure notification” messages that is described in one of those articles. the type that flashes up on the notification screen of my iphone and disappears once clicked with no record it ever existed. Its happened twice now. No instruction to isolate at all. apparently its something to do with apple And is somewhat of a glitch but the NHS covid app denies its anything to do with them, more to do with apple. I had a bit of a google and its a known thing. If I get an instruction to isolate from the app I will do just that.

NotAKaren · 09/10/2020 07:12

This is interesting and pretty much as I suspected.

The app is a load of shit, since having it I've had two close contacts which were registered on the app - not a peep. I isolated off my own bat after the cases in question told me (they overlapped which was useful!) and got tested. I dont leave my Bluetooth on for contact tracing because it absolutely wipes out my battery

NotTerfNorCis · 09/10/2020 07:21

I had one of those false alerts that vanishes when you click on it. It's a known bug.

happinessischocolate · 09/10/2020 07:35

Question - if you have the app and you do receive a dreaded notification... won't you get fined if you don't self isolate for 2 weeks?

How would this be monitored?

Couldn't they cross reference the names of the self isolators with company covid claims in their excel spreadsheet, or something 🤷‍♀️ I'm sure Vlookup or the find function would cover this 😁

NotAKaren · 09/10/2020 07:53

It was my understanding that this app would make contact tracing more effective. The recent news that track and trace had failed to contact quite high percentage of people and also the excel spreadsheet/ missing cases fiasco made me wonder about the app and that if at least some of those people had the app this should be pinging them alerts. Shouldn't the point of the app be to complement the track and trace system and to take some of the burden from manual contact tracing. According to today's new reports it's not working how people imagined.

My friend has been notified via the app that he has to isolate. His workplace has lockers for staff and the person with the locker next to his tested positive. Both had their phones in their lockers with the app switched on so he's 99% sure this is why. He did not actually even see the person in question but is isolating anyway. However, the people working with the person who tested positive have not been advised to isolate as they were following company distancing etc policies.

tapdancingmum · 09/10/2020 08:07

My exposure notifications seem to be stuck on 24th and 25th September so I'm not sure if it's working. I've clicked on it as I get a message at the end of every week to see how many people it's connected with but the dates haven't changed. Not quite sure if it's working properly 😀

SchrodingersUnicorn · 09/10/2020 08:11

We've been told not to use them in school. Because if someone tests positive we don't have to isolate unless they were literally in our face (PHE and DfE rules to keep us all in schools). On the front desk for a double lesson directly facing me at a distance of about 1m (that's the space we have)? Absolutely fine. But if it were a sixth former and we both had the app on, I'd be isolating and they don't want that.
Different rules in schools... let's hope covid got that memo too.

Thunderpunt · 09/10/2020 08:13

@Poetf these other systems are probably something called a pen and paper..... not everyone is able/wants to use the app so an alternative system should be offered

Where do you see exposure notifications, and how many people it’s connected with? I haven’t had any messages like that. Does that only come if you have connected with someone who is later tested positive?
Thisbastardcomputer · 09/10/2020 08:15

My 19 year old niece, she's isolated until Wednesday next week, her Mum is a bit of a NHS high flyer, she's delighted with the app.

pandafunfactory · 09/10/2020 08:16

@boriselbow and that's exactly why I'm not downloading it. It's absurd. I will isolate if told to do so by occ health, I'm nhs, or by T&T. I am not isolating because a flawed algorithm says so.

Brockwell · 09/10/2020 08:17

I only have all the settings on at home because it burns data and battery so quickly. So, it's not really worked for me Grin.

@boriselbow you’re meant to turn the app off if your phone is in a locker or similar to be fair
EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 09/10/2020 08:19

If it was working properly, with no glitches, if you were notified and HAD to isolate or you’d be fined then I’d probably download the app.

When I read threads like this it doesn’t fill me with confidence that it’s actually working as it should be.

The ONE issue I haven’t got the luxury of, is a company who would be happy for me go off isolating every five minutes and I wouldn’t get paid. DH company pay employees when they’re isolating, some employees are taking the piss but that’s another story.

Test & Trace, if they notified me I’d get a test and isolate, absolutely.

MsTSwift · 09/10/2020 08:20

Dd1 and I also had weird messages about exposure which vanished and we couldn’t find any further info

If you’ve got Bluetooth and therefore contract tracing turned off in the app, no wonder it didn’t notify you about your close contacts. How would the app know?

It can only notify you if:
+You both have the app with Bluetooth and contract tracing on
+Your phones are within 2m of each other for more than 15 mins (or closer for a shorter period)
+They book the test with the app or enter their positive results into the app

Meuniere · 09/10/2020 08:22

@boriselbow, our school has been very clear about that one.
If any pupil (over 16) has the app and leave their phone in their locker (as they should), they have to switch it off.
Not just because of the risk of having a phone in the locker next to them. But also because other pupils might stay next to the locker for a while and it will register it.

The fact that no one who has been working with the person testing positive has been told to self isolate is Shock
It shows how crap our test and trace system is tbh. All those people should have been contacted.

Meuniere · 09/10/2020 08:25

Tbh what we know is that an app isn’t the key to tracing people who have been in contact with someone positive with Covid. (Due to all the issues highlighted on this thread and more).

The key is a proper contact tracing system made out of PEOPLE.

Until the government actually acknowledges that IT isn’t the solution to it all (and not just for contact tracing! I’m thinking exams, settled status etc etc), we will struggle.
