Thermals for winter walks

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 11:49

I need to get the whole family thermals as winter walks are going to feature highly this year I envision.

Any recommendations as I don't know where to start.

Primark are good. Marks are nicer. Marks with silk are lovely (don't know if they do them mens)

MayFayre · 04/10/2020 12:02

Uniqlo do some that are reasonably priced. They’re fine if you’re doing reasonably short walks and layering up but even the ultra ones aren’t that warm. If you’re planning to be out for hours up mountains I’d go to a proper outdoor pursuits shop.

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 12:02

Marks of course! How did I not even contemplate underwear industry standard doh!

Wouldn't say up mountains but brisk walking up to 3/4 hours not unheard of, in woods, exposed fields, nothing extreme. But would rather buy one good set each than something cheaper that doesn't work.

What do I look for? Are there different materials?

Another vote for marks or uniqlo. Uniqlo do bodysuits for ladies as well which is great as I find thermals roll up over my muffin top

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2020 12:07

Look for "heat tech" at uniqlo and they have two versions, warm (which are thin and silky) or extra warm (which are thicker and fleece lined).

In my experience of hiking I find a thin thermal, then a fine merino jumper, then a waterproof is the best combo. Snood round the neck and a hat (I find hoods annoying while walking).

Lycra 'skins' sold by Sports Direct are best, ime. Leggings & long sleeve tops. Lycra insulates when wet & fit under everything else.

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 12:16

You would think I know this I have jogging stuff for winter but that's just me and I got "wind proof" leggings last winter by reading the label! But that was one pair of leggings this is x4 full sets which is clearly more of a financial commitment.

Thanks everyone. I am on a learning curve this morning.

Actually if you need 4 full sets and cost is a factor it might also be worth keeping an eye out for Lidl's skiwear sale - I got full sets for the whole family a couple of years ago for about £20 all in. Unsurprisingly they weren't as good as the marks/uniqlo ones, they bobbled and weren't as thin and silky. But they did the job.

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2020 12:20

Last year it was on sale the week of Nov 10th, probably similar timing this year

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 04/10/2020 12:24

Merino/silk blend is my go-to

Not cheap but lasts very well!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2020 12:26

DDs (for skiing) were from mountain warehouse.
I have lined walking trousers for winter, but none of us have ever wanted thermals for walking in the U.K. (NW England, walk a lot). We usually seem to start with fleeces, hats, gloves but they're usually in the pack after we've warmed up.

Goretex boots, coat with wired hood, and over trousers to keep you dry are more essential IME.

TotorosFurryBehind · 04/10/2020 12:30

Aldi and Lidl do great Merino wool base layers as part of their ski wear range

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/10/2020 12:35

over trousers to keep you dry Over trousers are also great for keeping the wind out.

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 13:31

I don't mind "investing" in the adult sets as, likelihood me and Mr may grow out, we won't grow up.

Kids can be middle of the road as they are still growing albeit slower, hoping their sets will last X2 seasons if I size right.

I just got some good stuff from Trespass, including some really warm socks. I suffer terribly from cold feet and chilblains!

Waterproof overtrousers keep out the wind as well as the rain, and coupled with tights under trousers/jeans, they are really warm.

Similarly a kagoule or waterproof over a fleece is as warm as a "warm coat".

I work outside in all weathers in a very windy part of the UK and am a layering veteran!

HesterShaw1 · 04/10/2020 13:39

You're right. Outdoor entertainment will be high on the agenda this winter.

That's actually no bad thing in terms of health and wellbeing.

herecomesthsun · 04/10/2020 13:48

Landsend have great outdoor wear for kids.

Pertella · 04/10/2020 13:53

We get all our ski base layers from decathlon. Usually get a set of bottoms and top for less than a tenner

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 13:54

Never heard of Landsend will check them out. This is all good info think I will do a Google session and get the best combination sets for us all.

Oh I agree I am just working on "...only had clothing" park of the equation!

We have always muddled through but as I am not spending on panto this year can afford to invest in adult wise sexy thermals!

And waterproof trousers.

We have ski jackets, fleeces, gloves, hats, boots ..........just the underwear.

Might buy another flask so we can carry hot chocolate AND coffee!

Bad clothing sorry

There’s merino base layers currently in the Aldi middle aisle and it’s really good quality. You can get it online too.

frozendaisy · 04/10/2020 14:09

I go out jogging in winter but that's just me, I only do an hour or so, not far from home, can warm up if I get wet and cold.

But different items required for family treks.
