Thermals for winter walks

I need to get the whole family thermals as winter walks are going to feature highly this year I envision.

Any recommendations as I don't know where to start.

Cycling base layers (wiggle dhb own-brand, or decathlon) are the warmest thing I have ever experienced.

Southern England though? It won't be that cold?? I'd just get a waterproof jacket and wear a fleece underneath, with a pair of tights under your jeans if it's a really cold day.

Polyester base layer. Fleece mid layer and then a waterproof outer layer. Mittens are warmer than gloves. I’ve ordered thin gloves then ski mittens for over the top. Merino wool socks and snow boots. I like to be prepared Grin

I actually find waterproofs more useful. They add an extra layer and keep the wind out, so they keep you warm and keep your clothes clean from mud splashes plus you can sit down on a wet bench or use the wet swings. We had some fantastic wet days in adventure playgrounds when DC were young. No other kids there meant mum and dad can use the slide Grin and if you've got waterproof trousers and find somewhere sheltered you can still picnic.

If active in UK winter days you wouldn't need thermals and waterproofs.

Yes we are South but we are also pussies!

Don't mind buying weather clothing.

I am also stingy with the heating which is fine when all are out but feel that the house will be in it more as autumn/winter progresses and if they watch anymore YouTube they will run out!

The autumn leaves are likely to look nice.

My battery-powered heated gilet (from Amazon) is a game changer.

I remember DF - a Yorkshireman born and bred, keen hill walker - saying the coldest he'd ever been was on a long walk on the Essex coast. An easterly wind can be biting.

Good quality waterproofs mean you can go for cheaper thermals. You dont need all singing all dancing thermals.

Layering is the way forward.
