What are your opinions on taking a UK holiday right now?

We are supposed to be going on a week's holiday quite soon. Approx 30 miles from home, car and ferry travel. In Scotland but not too or from a local lockdown area. Family of 4, self contained SC accommodation.
Would you? Should we?! Wildly different opinions being expressed amongst friends and family right now!

To not too!

I would and I have. Also went away in Scotland a few weeks ago, drove throughout local lockdown areas but didn't stay in one. Stayed in self catering accommodation, did supermarket food shopping, ate lunch / ice cream from a cafe outside a couple of days and got a chippy tea one night, just spent the days outside and chilling at the accommodation. Hardly came into contact with another person and did our mental health a world of good to have a change of (stunning) scenery.

ZigZagToTheBeach · 02/10/2020 20:27

Current laws and Government guidelines say that you can so yes, go for it!

RaraRachael · 02/10/2020 20:36

We have booked to go away for a few days in Scotland and will be very annoyed if guidelines change and we can't go. We have barely any cases in our area so are hacked off enough as it is at not being able to see family.

RepeatSwan · 02/10/2020 20:37

I think 30 miles seems ok.but I wouldn't book anything myself unless happy to lose the money.

RepeatSwan · 02/10/2020 20:38

It's possible that the nation's health might be more important than your holiday Grin
WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 02/10/2020 20:42

We were away last week in our touring caravan in the Peak District and are going to the Cotswolds in a couple of weeks, caravan site was full so plenty of people are going away still.

Ylvamoon · 02/10/2020 20:44

We have booked a cottage weekend away for a bit of hiking...
It's only 3 nights & 1.5 hours drive, so I will take all food with us mostly frozen / pe cooked in cool bag. (They have a freezer, I checked!) No need to go out and mix with other people. Still a holiday even if the prep is a bit more than usual...
I have done something similar a few weeks ago to visit family and it worked well.

I think in the end you need to do what you are comfortable with.

RaraRachael · 02/10/2020 20:49

RepeatSwan I'm getting fed up with all the contradictory advice given and how different areas are treated differently. Our schools had to go back a week early and conditions in them are shit. how inconsiderate of me to want a measly 3 days away from home Hmm

OpheliasCrayon · 02/10/2020 20:50

I'd go. You're self contained and a change of scenery would be nice I'm sure

tshirtsuntan · 02/10/2020 20:51

We have done a week in a caravan in Norfolk and a couple of days in premier inn in Kent over the summer, long weekend booked at butlins in a couple of weeks. If were not breaking any rules where we go/come from I'm going for it. Life goes on.

Quartz2208 · 02/10/2020 20:51

But what part of the nation's health is more important?

Missanneshirley · 02/10/2020 20:56

I know we're not technically breaking any rules, and we would absolutely be doing as a PP said, taking a big shop, walking, maybe the odd coffee or chips.
But it still feels a bit irresponsible somehow! We booked before the 1st lockdown, it's been a long time coming!

I wouldn’t, because I’m in a high-risk group due to asthma. I won’t be going anywhere until this nightmare is over.

Etinox · 02/10/2020 21:03

I would. In fact your break sounds exactly like my summer holiday. It was fully refundable, bar the ferry and we had a wonderful time. Masked up and supported the one shop and cafe on the island, brought most food from home.

RepeatSwan · 02/10/2020 21:05

I don't think it is irresponsible, I just wouldn't because they I find all the 'carrying on regardless' more draining than not bothering.

But people can be irresponsible in their own street.

If going would be better for you than not going, then that's what you should do. But nothing can be booked at the moment without being able to deal with disruption or cancellations.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/10/2020 21:06

I would. We've booked a long weekend at the beginning of December so we're keeping everything crossed we can go. The agency have said that if we can't I can transfer the payment to another holiday we've got booked next year so I'm not worried about losing the money.

Spacemonkey2016 · 02/10/2020 21:18

We've had our UK holiday booked for over a year. Due to go in November. Stuck to every rule, so will be there with absolute bells on, provided it's not cancelled and still within guidelines. I say go.

IncidentsandAccidents · 02/10/2020 21:42

It doesn't sound irresponsible to me, OP. It sounds like a lovely break, self-contained with limited contact with others. I would do this.

LilyPond2 · 02/10/2020 22:12

The one aspect of that holiday that would give me cause for concern would be the ferry. Will it be possible to socially distance or will you be stuck indoors close to other people?

shinynewapple2020 · 02/10/2020 22:13

Yes , we went away a couple of weeks ago and have another few days away next week

Travelling in our own car
Self catering

Neither our home area or where we are / have travelled to are in local lockdown areas and we have very few outside contacts both in day to day life and when we are away

Kittytheteapot · 02/10/2020 22:17

We did 2 weeks ago. Self catered throughout. Contact with virtually no-one and certainly less people that we are in contact with during our normal lives. Loads of other holiday makers about.

A friend and her dh have just got back from a week away. Half the people I work with are currently away on holiday, either for a full week or a long weekend.

I would say, if it remains within guidance, go. The change of scene did me a world of good.

OnNaturesCourse · 02/10/2020 22:18

We are travelling from Scotland to England in a few weeks, approximately 7 hours in the car. Traveling and staying as a household unit, will be dining in a restaurant once a day and eating in our hotel room the rest of the time (long weekend). We are going as its not a high risk area, we are staying in our unit, and not doing anything we wouldn't be doing at home anyway (including 1 day outing)

We have decided to take our own food and snacks for the journey instead of stopping at service stations, we will only stop for fuel and toilet breaks. (taking a travel potty for kid so hopefully won't be in and out places too much)

KitKatastrophe · 02/10/2020 22:21

We are going on a UK break next week and can't wait. If you are in a low level area (I.e. no local lockdown) and the place you're travelling to is as well, then what's the harm? I'm sure you'll have a lovely time.

Vicliz24 · 02/10/2020 22:31

Yes go . We have been to our beach hut an hour and a half away every fortnight since July when we were allowed to for the first time this year . It's been a vital break for my DH who has worked non stop this year . Have fun
