Been back at work 6 weeks (teacher). Now off again having to do a 3rd test on the kids. High temp twice and cough once. I feel like there is no point using childcare as everytime youngest gets a temp(lots it seems as it goes up with every tooth coming too.....) older brother is out of school and we isolate too :-(. But if I take him out of nursery I have to quit work which I can't even do til xmas due to giving notice. My boss is fuming and thinks nursery are ott but they are just following guidelines. My special leave days will run out fast then when it happens again we'll bring paying nursery when we aren't earning to cover it.

Needed to rant :-(. Feels like no solution other than hoping for a quicker test soon...... and yet anyone I speak to it seems aren't even isolating for household cases? I thought it was illegal not to.

Lemons1571 · 01/10/2020 16:06

It’s only illegal if t&t have been in touch or if one of you tests positive. If your childcare won’t accept the kids though, you’re stuffed. It’s shit.

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 16:40

So I could still theoretically work as a teacher while waiting for ds test results?( if husband takes time off instead of both of us?). That doesn't seem right. I'm the only staff member with kids in childcare instead of with family/ in school so it looks awful when no one else is having issues :-(.

Yes childcare won't take ds back without negative test/ ten days out. I really want to send my eldest to school tomorrow anyway as I'm 99% sure it's teeth(I won't though as don't know for sure). DS gets a day of temps with every single tooth he cuts- up to 39 for the molars and canines. I know officially teething doesn't cause that but it's happened with every tooth......

OP posts:
blueblueblue4 · 01/10/2020 16:58

We are in same position, tested as Ds had a cough but suspect it's not cv. However we are all at home and I am teaching via zoom again (extra curricular). Really want the test to come back so we can have a chance of everyone going to school tomorrow...

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 18:17

So after speaking to my husband I'm even more annoyed as temp only got to 38.1. They are saying he was upset and clingy not eating- well he's cutting 2 canines..... they didn't even try giving teething granules. 38.1 could easily be teeth plus screaming making him hot. Unbelievable. His temp has been fine all afternoon. I even told them he'd be grumpy as can't send him in with nurofen for teeth pain with the virus etc.

Afaik You don't have to isolate if your son merely has symptoms but not a confirmed test. Your symptomatic son has to isolate until he gets negative, though.

Keepdistance · 01/10/2020 18:28

No of course you cant!
Your whole family isolates from symptom to result
Or 14d

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 18:32

Interesting- I thought we had to isolate with any symptoms in family until a negative test like @keepdistance said but 2 people on here saying not...... my head wanted me to go in but I was sure I wasn't allowed!

No wonder this virus is spreading so much :-|.

OP posts:
Keepdistance · 01/10/2020 18:33

37.8 is the cutoff
It wouldnt matter even if he werent in childcare in that you would still need to isolate, but yes he may not get as ill.
We've already had 2w off and dc2 missed some of reception now doesnt have any friends.
We could have tested the rest of us and not had to isolate as long but realistically we would have been to the test site 4 times.
If the work was online i would say easier to just study from home for the 2w as the test is only 75% accurate or so

Hercwasonaroll · 01/10/2020 18:36

You don't need to isolate unless he tests positive.

Keepdistance · 01/10/2020 18:38

The not everyone isolating is for contact ie bubbles or friends.
If dc friend gets it and only dc had contact then its just him or his bubble etc.
I agree it's frustrating with whole family isolating as you get it one after the other too with most colds.

Symptoms in family =isolate everyone and only go out for a test.

I dont think the people who decided on this process had met children as you have found op the constsntky have coughs and temps and give it to parents and siblings.
Also there is a need to home tests really as ideally you dont want to get in the car with a contsgious child.

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 18:40

I cant stay off work for 2 weeks..... I'm a primary teacher!! They have to pay supply for me. Our school guidance for children says if someone in their family has symptoms they can't come in until there's been a negative test so must be the same for staff....... I'm off to read the guidance as doubting myself now.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/

Yes you all do!
Its under if someone you live with has symptoms

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 18:44

This is what I thought.......

Hopefully results come quick. It's rubbish and people using childcare are stuffed. It's making life so difficult with work :-(. I have to keep explaining I have nowhere else to leave him as no family etc anywhere nearby........

OP posts:
Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 18:45

@Keepdistance thanks. I'll forward that to my work if they say anything too...........

Triangularbubble · 01/10/2020 18:49

Even if you had family willing to babysit you and he need to isolate until he gets a negative test. You are going to repeatedly miss work, that is how it is. I’d expect a school to understand that concept since they are supposed to be enforcing it on their children.

Lemons1571 · 01/10/2020 18:51

Sorry I got it wrong, if DS has symptoms rather than just being a contact, then yes the whole household has to isolate.

Weren’t they supposed to sort tests out so that nhs and teachers could get family tests as a priority? The last I read about that was that only teachers with symptoms could get a priority test. Useless.

I suppose at the moment they can’t even get enough testing going, let alone trying to prioritise how they are issued.

Lostinagoodbook · 01/10/2020 19:34

I have a test but it's still 2 days out each time....... I work part time and it's fallen over my work days both times now.

@Triangularbubble no chn or staff in my school have taken a test afaik. No chn have been sent home through illness.

It's not always obvious if kids have a temp and most won't cough.

I know of parents who leave their kids with family so they DON'T have to isolate if their kid is ill as they don't want to lose their job. Also some who keep chn at home when ill so they don't have to test. It feels like a lot of people are not following guidance tbh. Not saying it's right obviously.

Can't believe there are so many people saying don't isolate unless DS gets a positive test result - the rule about households isolating if any member has a temperature or cough has been in place since March FFS! I'd be worried about your boss' attitude - if he/she doesn't support the guidance, what message are they sending out to kids in the school you teach at? It is really very simple to understand the rules. I realize this doesn't make your position any easier, but honestly I cannot believe some of the attitudes you're encountering on this thread and from your management.

*Hercwasonaroll

You don't need to isolate unless he tests positive.*

This is NOT the case!

From Government website:

“If you have coronavirus symptoms:

a high temperature
a new, continuous cough
a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste
Get a test and stay at home“

“ Main messages
If you have symptoms of COVID-19 however mild, self-isolate for at least 10 days from when your symptoms started. You should arrange to have a test to see if you have COVID-19 – go to testing to arrange. Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

If you are not experiencing symptoms but have tested positive for COVID-19, you must self-isolate for at least 10 days, starting from the day the test was taken. If you develop symptoms during this isolation period, restart your 10-day isolation from the day you developed symptoms.

You could be fined if you do not stay at home and self-isolate following a positive test result for COVID-19 or if you are contacted by NHS Test and Trace and instructed to self-isolate.

After 10 days, if you still have a temperature you should continue to self-isolate and seek medical advice. You do not need to self-isolate after 10 days if you only have a cough or loss of sense of smell or taste, as these symptoms can last for several weeks after the infection has gone. See the ending isolation section below for more information.

If you live with others, all other household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the household became ill or if they do not have symptoms, from the day their test was taken. If anyone else in the household starts displaying symptoms, they must stay at home for at least 10 days from when their symptoms appear, regardless of what day they are on in their original 14-day isolation period. The ending isolation section below has more information.”

Hercwasonaroll · 01/10/2020 20:01

Thing is, no teacher is going to have 14 days off because their kid had a temperature.

FraterculaArctica · 01/10/2020 20:03

No, they're meant to test and when the test comes back negative THEN they can go back. The government advice - which schools should be following - is very clear.

Blulorry · 01/10/2020 20:06

I’m fed up too OP!! Can’t you get a note from your GP for isolating? What ever your work say... it’s tough. You have to abide by the rules a lot of parents are struggling at the moment.

lunar1 · 01/10/2020 20:11

People are confusing being a contact with having symptoms.

If you are a contact then it's just them that isolates.

If a member of the household has symptoms the whole house isolates till results are back.

worriedandannoyed · 01/10/2020 20:26

@lljkk

Afaik You don't have to isolate if your son merely has symptoms but not a confirmed test. Your symptomatic son has to isolate until he gets negative, though.
Everyone in a household has to isolate if one person has symptoms
Keepdistance · 01/10/2020 20:51

Tbh i can see many people dont follow it. As eg my dc got a temp for a couple of hours on a Saturday night. Fine otherwise for a few days then a mild but slightly more than 3 a day bouts of coughing.
Noone else would have known about the temp. And in fact if dc hadnt woken up for a wee neither would we.
Again with a cough it could start on a fri and be almost gone by Monday.
So some people will chance it.
