Can someone explain this to me? I keep hearing about it but not sure what/why people believe this.

OP posts:
x2boys · 30/09/2020 19:56

I have no idea either ,why would the whole world conspire together ,you can't cure stupid I guess .

lljkk · 30/09/2020 19:59

Because it feels surreal unless you're personally affected so then you start to think it might be imaginary. Also, some people love conspiracy theories. CTs have lots of sure answers and most of all someone to clearly blame and call wrong for why stuff went wrong.

GreatestShowUnicorn · 30/09/2020 20:03

I really must google Covid conspiracy theories someone today told me Covid was a conspiracy but could tell me why or by who!

OP posts:
ginandbearit · 30/09/2020 20:23

Look on youtube re the London anti covid demo last weekend and the police reaction ..all sorts of people there in the thousands ..not much mainstream coverage which fuels conspiracy theories too ..oh and David Icke was there ..

LaurieFairyCake · 30/09/2020 20:27

Because people want it to be Confused

Living like this with no end feels ridiculous to some people - who wouldn't want to believe a conspiracy 🤷‍♀️

willloman · 30/09/2020 20:29

Watch the Social Dilemma. It explains how people get (over) fed this ridiculous stuff - flat earth, 5G roll on through marketing algorithms which reinforce crazy beliefs. I could never work out how seemingly educated people spouted this nonsense either.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 30/09/2020 20:46

There isn’t a single conspiracy theory. There are many, many different things that people have made up - a number of which conflict with each other. But they generally boil down to there being a secret cabal of super-powerful people who actually run the world. Politicians worldwide are just their puppets and coronavirus is a tool that’s being used by them to assert ultimate control over the global population.

Conspiracy theories are generally latched on to by people who struggle with the idea of a crisis over which they have no control - so they make up theories that assign a perpetrator.

There is also research that indicates a correlation between belief in conspiracy theories and psychological disorders.

TheGreatWave · 30/09/2020 20:47

Maybe for some the idea that this is something that is being and can be controlled by humans is easier to deal with than the notion that this is something completely out of our control.

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 30/09/2020 20:48

Best one I’ve heard so far- they want us to all stay indoors so they can recharge the batteries in the birds Hmm

FatGirlShrinking · 30/09/2020 21:01

Baffles me too.

Who can really believe that all the governments of the world, people who as a general rule can barely agree with each other that the sun is yellow, have suddenly decided to all conspire together to get the global populace to believe there is a virus that may kill them.

To what end? What is the ultimate goal of this massive conspiracy?

You've got the 5G'ers who believe that there is no virus, people are getting ill because of radiation from 5G towers but 'The Man' doesn't want them to 'now that so is instead making up a coronavirus.

Then there are the Bill Gates fantasists who believe Bill Gates has masterminded the whole thing so he can have full control over a vaccination programme, make hundreds of billions of dollars and also implant everyone in the world with a microchip so he can track us all.

It's madness!

Facelikearustytractor · 30/09/2020 21:15

I don't mind the theories, you need some wacky theories for balance, and I would much rather people question things than not at all while their freedoms are being taken away. To have everyone doing as they are told is far scarier.

It does annoy me being lectured about conspiracy theories though - just because I don't believe them or give them scrutiny doesn't mean I can't think for myself and I'm stupid. Those people do need to fuck off.

LeSquigh · 30/09/2020 21:27

People always believe in things that aren't true.

The biggest example is God.

CoffeeandCroissant · 30/09/2020 22:28

Bullshit doesn't provide 'balance'! Conspiracy theories aren't harmless either, they are potentially dangerous and could cost lives.

CoffeeandCroissant · 30/09/2020 22:29

Often an anti-Semitic element to them too.

OutComeTheWolves · 30/09/2020 22:34

Governments lie and cover shit up. We saw this after Hillsborough and we currently have a PM who has been sacked from previous jobs for lying. I think it's fairly natural that during a stressful/isolated period people will try to fill in the gaps of what they've 'been told' and this is how conspiracies are born I suppose. I think it's a fairly common coping mechanism to try and look for control or order when things seem chaotic.

For all I don't believe all of the Covid conspiracies, I don't like it when people act snide or take the piss out of those that do. I'm not even that old and I can think of a fair few things that were derided initially before they turned out to be correct. The treatment of both Rose McGowan and Corey Feldman springs to mind.

Fetaliving · 30/09/2020 22:38

Strong brainwashing tactics plus people desperate to cope with the hugeness of this, plus the psychology and comfort of normalcy bias. Whilst I can’t comprehend how people would believe this stuff I can also empathise how it would make them feel better to believe it. We all have different coping mechanisms.

... 😂😂 I'll vote for that conspiracy !

... Yes, just depends whether it's in the open, or buried until you become part of the gang
PerkingFaintly · 30/09/2020 22:41

Unless you're actually trying to spread "Covid is a conspiracy" as a message, it's probably better not to have a thread title stating that like a fact.

I've noticed people keep doing this – many inadvertently, I'm sure. People start a thread with a headline, then go on to say they think is untrue. (Thread title: "Kim Kardashian dead". Opening post: "She isn't is she?")

OP, maybe ask MNHQ to fix your thread title, eg, "Why on earth have I seen people suggesting covid is a conspiracy?" Otherwise you're doing the conspiracy-mongers' work for them.

Defenbaker · 30/09/2020 23:04

I blame a lot of it on the X Files TV series. I was watching some old repeats recently and it's amazing how many of the plot lines are actually believed as truth by David Icke and his followers. I even wondered if Icke got his crazy ideas from that series in the first place, but a quick google indicates he started with his theories around 1991, while the series began airing in 1993, so maybe the writers pinched ideas from him.

Late at night, when I'm bored, I've occasionally gone down the rabbit hole and watched some of Icke's vids on Youtube. He seems to believe all his crazy theories, but then again he's probably made a good living out of it all, so who knows what's really going on in his head?

For me, no matter how plausible those theories might be, it all rests on one thing - could so many people around the world a) agree to co-operate on such a huge scale and b) keep such huge secrets for so long? For me, the answer to both questions is no.

Defenbaker · 30/09/2020 23:06

That last bit should read "it all rests on two things..." Doh! Blush

MushMonster · 30/09/2020 23:09

LOL I like the Bill Gates one. Microchips to track us all Grin

Ophelia2020 · 30/09/2020 23:09

I'm no flat earthier but I don't like that Bill Gates has such an influence on global health policies. His obsession with vaccines worries me a lot.

MushMonster · 30/09/2020 23:14

But we may get microchips! No need for keys (like the carflaps that read the microchip), credit or debit cards, ID card, work access cards, library cards, shop cards, and so on.
They only need scanners in each place and you are done!Grin
