No heating at school?

SistemaAddict · 28/09/2020 17:42

I saw a thread earlier today about this but now can't find it so apologies but wtf? Are schools seriously not going to have heating on in winter? I appreciate that there's little point if the heat goes straight out of the windows but really? Is this a UK wide thing? An anyone link to any info please.

We aren't nesh by a long shot but Dd2 looks like a corpse at the extremities even on a cool summer day.

Our loxal authority haven't yet decided, wtahe preoblem with our heating is it is blown air so that may be a problem. In fairness at least half the winter ours doesn't work anyway.

Mistressiggi · 28/09/2020 17:45

Our radiators are on already. I think they will need to be turned up while the windows are open!

Enoughnowstop · 28/09/2020 17:46

You expect teachers to take even bigger risks?

LadyCatStark · 28/09/2020 17:48

The heating is on in DS’s new secondary school. He’s most pleased because they’re having most lessons in their from room and he sits near the radiator 😂

I’m pretty sure teachers would prefer the hearing to be on!
slipperywhensparticus · 28/09/2020 17:50

Explain how constant cold air helps? I agree freshening the room but freezing everyone isn't useful

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/09/2020 17:54

Our radiators are on. I was hot in my classroom today, even with the windows and door wide open.

Certain types of hearing system may well be a problem though, the blown air types are just circulating the air around the room, so would be a sure fire way to infect as many people as possible if one pupil happens to have covid (or most viruses to be fair).

I would suggest stocking up on base layers if you know your dd is likely to get cold.

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 28/09/2020 17:56

My school are still awaiting guidance. I only have blown air heaters in my classroom. It was absolutely freezing on Friday when we had a chilly day and the windows open so I hope they will provide us with electric heaters or something if we can't use the blown air.

AvoidingRealHumans · 28/09/2020 17:58

Our school sent an email today saying they have to keep all doors and windows open so as its getting cooler and we're going into winter we should layer the children up.
Didn't mention not using the heating but if the door is open it won't be much help anyway.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 28/09/2020 18:01

In both my son's and my granddaughter's schools, the windows are sealed except for one which has to open due to fire code regulations. There has been no mention of not having heat on. Traditionally heat is on from November 1 thru March 15 in all schools in our district -- public and private.

Ginqueen456 · 28/09/2020 18:12

My eldests school never turns them on during the winter anyway as its too expensive to heat up the old drafty class rooms and my youngest schools heating has been broken for at least 3 years where they have to turn one side of the school into a literal sauna in order to heat the other side!

Kitcat122 · 28/09/2020 19:13

Windows and doors to be kept open in my school. We are told to layer up. Government guidelines.

Toastycornflakes · 28/09/2020 19:28

My sons new classroom doesn’t even have a window. So he will probably be warm but it’ll be very germy in there

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 28/09/2020 19:39

Our heaters are on and windows open. Secondary school.

cardibach · 28/09/2020 19:41

Radiators would be fine. Circulating air, not so much. And windows have to be open.
I’m pretty sure teachers would prefer the hearing to be on! No, @LadyCatStark Teachers would prefer not to be infected with Covid. If schools can’t stay above 16C without shutting windows or using recycled air 8n heating, then they’ll have to close.

NailsNeedDoing · 28/09/2020 19:54

Our hearings been on already because we’ve had windows open. There’s no way I’ll still be in my job in January if the heating has to go off.

Notcontent · 28/09/2020 20:01

I started a thread about this today in Chat.

I asked my DD some more probing questions about it when she got home from school (secondary so can trust what DD says!). But basically at her school at the moment windows are open and no heating, and some teachers have been saying that there will be no heating at all this winter, but overall it sounds like they have no idea at the moment what they will do...

SistemaAddict · 28/09/2020 20:13

@Notcontent aha! I knew I'd seen it somewhere but then couldn't find it.

Pp who mentioned teachers taking more risks? No, I don't think they should. I don't believe schools are safe for teachers or students. Dd1s teacher has a heart condition and has to stay behind a screen. How is anyone supposed to teach like that?

How would heating increase risks? I thought it spread better in cold air, that was why it spread so much at that German(?) meat factory wasn’t it?

Danglingmod · 28/09/2020 20:18

No heating will be on in my classroom as it's blown air (will just circulate the virus). It's bloody freezing already. I have ordered lots of thermals.

Frlrlrubert · 28/09/2020 20:20

We have the windows and doors open and the heating on. I'm not sure the heating will be sufficient and I get cold easily so I've already been on amazon stocking up on thermal tights and socks and long sleeved base layers. Also fingertip-less compression gloves.

Our union rep is going to ask what happens if a classroom drops below the legal minimum of 16 degrees (memories of being sent home in the 90s when my school boiler broke), but at the moment I don't know. I'd suggest buying children base layers and thick socks.

JulesCobb · 28/09/2020 20:23

I was so cold this morning in my first lesson it took me over half an hour to warm up after. I also have raynauds. I could barely, and not accurately, type.

Honest to god if i suddenly came in to enough money to live, id be walking out. But i dont want to rosk going into another job in the current climate.

Not in our school, I spent a whole winter with no heating, classroom never above 10 degrees, a few times we were as low as 3 degrees and we were all in gloves, coats and hats. It was all checked by our union abd confirmed that there was no official lower or upper temp 🥶🥶

Barbie222 · 28/09/2020 20:32

Our school needs permission from the LA to "override" heating settings which are normally turned off till half term. We have overridden them today finally. But windows will still be open more than they will be closed.

ZZGirl · 28/09/2020 20:33

Our heating is on but the windows are open for ventilation
