We’ve been isolating while waiting for my DD’s test results and they’ve just come back positive. I’m shocked 😭 bu really worried too. She has epilepsy and mild cerebral palsy and I’m not sure what to expect. I don’t know anyone else who has COVID let alone their children 😭😭😭

I don’t have experience of this but I’m guessing you should be straight in touch with her daughter so you know what to expect and how to manage different scenarios. I hope the dr is able to reassure you and I hope your dd makes a speedy recovery.

Anniemabel · 28/09/2020 15:14

Sorry, doctor not daughter!

Harrysmum2020 · 28/09/2020 15:15

I’d get intouch with your dds paediatrician hope she’s on the mend soon Flowers

RepeatSwan · 28/09/2020 15:16

Thinking of you, just take really good emotional care of yourself too as this will be really worrying Flowers

Essex16 · 28/09/2020 15:19

I called her doctor and they weren’t very reassuring unfortunately. Basically said nothing different we should be doing but if she gets worse go to hospital 😟

My DS doesn’t have any underlining medical issues but Covid has been very mild for him so far. He tested positive 9 days ago. With his level of illness pre-Covid he wouldn’t have even been off school.

RepeatSwan · 28/09/2020 15:22

Do you know where your DD caught it? I'm so sorry your doctor wasn't reassuring. I will think of you.

Winkywoowoo · 28/09/2020 15:25

I saw your post and had to comment, My son aged 8 also has epilepsy and CP from birth acquired low oxygen supply. My partner tested positive April time after returning from a work posting, as did I and son.

I have to say my son was TOTALLY FINE, like you I was panicking due to both conditions but he wasn't affected anymore than a normal cold. I called his consultant and epilepsy nurse and both advised keep a close eye on him but honestly my fear was far worse than his actual symptoms.

Essex16 · 28/09/2020 15:28

Thank you for the kind words

Not sure where she caught it but my guess is school as we’ve not really been anywhere since she started at beginning of Sep.

She does seem to have mild symptoms so far (🤞🏼) but I stupidly keep thinking of comments I read of people having long lasting effects after they’ve recovered

I read a lot of doom and gloom but if I were you I would not read anything online, just focus 100% on your mental health and making sure she is comfy. If it helps you do regular checks, then you can be sure you won't miss anything.

If you feel worried at all, just over react as much as you like Grin and get her checked.

ChristmasCarcass · 28/09/2020 15:32

Does she have any symptoms at the minute?

Most children get this very mildly - I think there have been something like three deaths in under 18s? And only one of those was in previous good health, which it sounds like your daughter is (cerebral palsy and epilepsy won’t put her at higher risk of infection). Compare that with the tens of thousands of children who have likely had covid in the UK so far.

Self-isolate within the household, and treat her like she has a cold (fluids, paracetamol if she needs it). Ring your GP if something changes . I understand why you’re worried but I’m sure she will be fine.

Winkywoowoo · 28/09/2020 15:33

I think that's only natural and also because of parents of children with other conditions we know that things can 'go wrong' and get more complicated.

I tried to remember how resilient children are and that the stats worldwide of children being severely impacted are thankfully still low.

Fingers crossed she only has cold like symptoms, rest up and lots of cuddles with her should help 😀

blueberrries · 28/09/2020 15:35

Can I ask how unwell is she ? Keep hearing it’s only mild for kids but also have dd with additional needs so I worry
Hope your little one is ok x

Essex16 · 28/09/2020 15:39

I’m definitely not going to read anything online anymore 🤦🏻‍♀️

The only symptom she has is a cough, her voice is raspey and she did have wheezing/shortness of breath (which has calmed down now) but I don’t think those 2 are actually official symptoms. I’m going to keep 3 eyes on her and see how it goes

Are the school sending the bubble home?
Shortness of breath is a symptom

So far it is mild. The cough started first and I thought gp was overreacting when he said get tested! It was the wheezing/shortness of breath which made me call gp in the first place but that settled within 24 hrs

My friends son has Mild cp and a form of epilepsy, the household have almost certainly had covid (before testing was available). Her son only had diarrhea, no other symptoms and is fully recovered. Her paediatric consultant who he's still under said he's not on a high risk list at all so don't worry any more than you would do anyway.

BlueThistles · 28/09/2020 15:58

I'm so sorry to read this OP Flowers

I agree, my son's consultant said it's more children with chronic chest issues that MAY encounter longer term problems.

I found thinking of it as a cold helped both me and my partner not worry so much in front of our son. Ice lollies helped with his cough and hoarseness. Within a week he was completely fine and has been since.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/09/2020 16:01

Can i suggest an oxymeter? Can be reassuring. But equally can be helpful in recognising if you need further help.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 28/09/2020 16:04

My 2 kids had it - one had a temperature for 2 days that we kept under control with paracetamol and ibuprofen, headache and terrible fatigue, he lay in bed for 2 days whereas normally he's bouncing off the walls! The older one was just very tired. They both coughed a little bit but not a continuous cough and the one with asthma had no issues with breathing at all.

They were both fine and it was easily managed, they've had worse colds, croup and random viruses over the years tbh.

It is scary though when you know they have it, my dr relative kept reminding me that for most people it's a mild illness.

DP who's old and diabetic had it too- he was also fine!

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 28/09/2020 16:06

Oh and I made my younger one sleep in bed with me at night so I could check him regularly and incase he woke up needing anything- he didn't!

Essex16 · 28/09/2020 16:48

Honestly thank you so much for all your comments. You’ve all been much more reassuring than her GP and Pediatrician!! 💖
