A potential social lockdown?

Concerned7777 · 28/09/2020 13:27

I've seen some articles in my local paper suggesting the government may implement a social lockdown in the North and London for 2 weeks maybe longer. A total closure of all hospitality and leisure facilities. Schools factories and other workplaces to remain open if unable to work from home along with a total ban on households mixing.
My opinion is this preferable to a total lockdown but will it be enough? It was suggested for 2 weeks with the possibility of being longer but surely 2 weeks isnt long enough to create a massive drop in transmission would we end up socially locked down for the foreseeable and will people abide long term not to mix households?

Cue the “shut the pubs because I don’t use them/rely on one for income” people

Rushjob · 28/09/2020 13:29

But no. This all needs to end now. Repeal the Coronavirus Act.

Concerned7777 · 28/09/2020 13:31

@Rushjob surely the government would have to step in and help protect incomes if they are closing them off, you'd like to hope so anyway

I think people need to see more evidence that pubs are causing the spread.

Browneyesbigbum · 28/09/2020 13:34

Looking at the news today and the partying in Manchester in large groups at the weekend and the mass protest in London i think that a strict lock down again will be ignored

Browneyesbigbum · 28/09/2020 13:35

The spread appears to be university spreads from large gatherings and large social groups

Yetiyoga · 28/09/2020 13:36

I'm not sure how well it would go down with people living in those areas when the 'south' still get to do as they please (with social distancing) and I say this as someone who doesn't live in those areas. I kind of feel like should we all be in this together. But then again, that could seriously damage hospitality even more if everywhere is shut.
Argh. I don't know. It is such a mess. I don't know what the right thing is to do :(

Yetiyoga · 28/09/2020 13:37

@Browneyesbigbum I don't think it is just university students to blame. Cases have been rising before uni students returned.

Rushjob · 28/09/2020 13:39

@Concerned7777 sadly I don’t think that would happen else the furlough would have been extended last week rather than the whole 33% thing which most employers won’t be able to afford.

Sadly the economic mess now the fallout will be much worse come November than what Covid can manage

ChaChaCha2012 · 28/09/2020 13:40

The opposition has pushed for this, tailored support for the industries most affected. It's not happened. Furlough was a blunt tool that was abused by employers that didn't need it, and excluded many that did. The new plan is even worse.

Concerned7777 · 28/09/2020 13:40

To be fair they don't need to show evidence they have the powers to close whatever they like and we have no choice but to along with it

@Browneyesbigbum Many non university areas have experienced exponential increases. The increases in my area are workplace related.

MarcelineMissouri · 28/09/2020 13:45

Sorry for the fail link but that doesn’t seem to be where outbreaks are coming from

Crocciesnap · 28/09/2020 13:47

It's not sustainable to shut pubs on an ongoing basis. Look at prohibition in US and what happened there! So many lonely older men rely on bars for company too. I don't feel this can go on for much longer.

Gobacktothe90s · 28/09/2020 13:51

They will probably do this and say it's for 2 weeks but then it will be extended when cases don't drop.

Does this mean they will stop support bubbles for single adults then?

Worriedmum999 · 28/09/2020 13:53

The elephant in the room is that most cases over the last week were in schools and universities. If you are trying to save the economy you need to shut those but obviously that would be political suicide now. Schools and unis can’t continue without some business being closed. It’s an impossible choice.

Napqueen1234 · 28/09/2020 13:53

I agree @Yetiyoga I live in a lockdown area but most of my family and friends live outside. It’s really hard seeing them living normally and having people round to their houses when we aren’t allowed. If they do this 2 week lockdown I expect a lot of affected people will go on ‘holiday’ to low risk areas to avoid it (completely legal BTW).

Foobydoo · 28/09/2020 13:57

This won't work. Schools are now the epicentre and I don't know what the answer is.
I really don't want them to close but they cannot go on as they are.
We need money spent on proper mitigation in schools. The failure to do this will cost far more in the long-term if we end up in another national lockdown or in cost of the damage educationally when schools are forced to close again.

Yetiyoga · 28/09/2020 14:02

I just don't know how they thought it would be a good idea to let all those children back in together. Surely a 50 % capacity would have been better on a rota basis?

Ellsbells12 · 28/09/2020 14:05

Madrid are refusing to shut down and we need to stop this now !!! Sorry but people's livelihoods going , mental health etc you can't keep locking down

I know most MN will disagree but when I speak to my 40 year old friend who is on the verge of losing her business and crying enough is enough

Frost1nMay · 28/09/2020 14:07

How can anyone on here be so sure what the epicenter is?

Worriedmum999 · 28/09/2020 14:09

Look at the ONS charts. Schools account for 40% of the cases or something like that.

Browneyesbigbum · 28/09/2020 14:11

I agree with you too

How many infections are linked to exercise? I go to the leisure centre, everything is strictly social distanced and controlled with fogging used to disinfect the machines several times during the day.

How many cases are linked to restaurants and coffee shops? I've been out a few times and there have also been good social distancing and hygiene measures in place.

I can understand that people who are drunk are not social distancing but it doesn't mean everything else needs to close.

They have banned all meeting in households in Scotland and most people I know are ignoring it.

Ellsbells12 · 28/09/2020 14:27

@Gingerkittykat good for them pay my mortgage then tell me who I can have in my house
