Covid-19 in Scotland: Sharp spike in infections among teenagers www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-54314910

Surely NS must try to improve the situation here. I read that France had a third of outbreaks in educational settings. The PHE report shows more outbreaks in educational settings than anywhere else this week too.

When are the U.K. government going to do something??!!

Is this not more to do with kids in Uni flouting the rules and now in lockdown. There are hundred of kids isolating in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow because they wanted to party and go to the pub.

Cakestandkitchen · 27/09/2020 13:23

And she has done something. No mixing in other households. Uni halls are in lockdown.

monkeytennis97 · 27/09/2020 13:23

15-19 includes KS4 and KS5 as well as the freshers at uni. KS5 in particular are also not averse to going out and socializing in pubs..

Improve the situation in educational settings (secondary schools/sixth form colleges), I believe the uni situation is a good smokescreen for what's going on in schools. Please don't bite my head off but over 2000 schools now have closed year groups/bubbles now.

In Scotland? I don’t think so. Where do you get 2000 from please?

monkeytennis97 · 27/09/2020 13:31

No in whole of U.K... I don't live in Scotland but due to schools opening there 2 weeks ahead of us In England this is going to happen here (if it's not already).

MeridaTheBold · 27/09/2020 13:33

I think they might lockdown and close schools again. I know a few schools that have sent out info this week about what online learning will look like if there is another lockdown.
It might not be the same as last time ie it might be only in high risk areas. But they can't keep pretending it's not spreading in schools.

Cakestandkitchen · 27/09/2020 13:34

What do you want Nicola Sturgeon to do?

monkeytennis97 · 27/09/2020 13:35

Well just as I want for England really-move to tier 2 for schools or at least mandate mask wearing in secondary schools during lesson time as well as in corridors.

There were 465 positive cases in Scotland on Thursday. Approx 199 were in the 15-19 age group you’ve mentioned. It’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things. As I say, mainly university students. Not high school.

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2020 13:45

Do you know it was mainly uni, or are you guessing?

Many uni students caught this by virtue of being confined in close spaces with others. Please don't fall for the sloppy all out partying blame line. They were sitting ducks.

S00LA · 27/09/2020 13:45

What is KS4 and KS5? Are you sure that exists in Scotland?

dementedpixie · 27/09/2020 13:48

They are an English thing as is 6th form

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2020 13:48

It doesnt exist but this is a thread about teens rather than about Scottish ones in particular, I think?

ClarencesMum · 27/09/2020 13:48

@S00LA

Pretty sure it doesn't!

17 - 19 could be uni students in those figures.

15 -18 could be secondary school.

Nix2020 · 27/09/2020 13:49

What I'd be interested to see is what the hospitalisation rate, of this age group that's tested positive at university. They are getting a lot of blame for trying to have a life.

Cakestandkitchen · 27/09/2020 13:49

It’s been all over the news that it’s Uni. It was the main headlines. Abertay, Napier and a Uni in Glasgow. Can’t remember which one. All halls of residence. 172 confirmed cases at Glasgow Uni. 120 at Napier.

monkeytennis97 · 27/09/2020 13:51

Yes exactly @Piggywaspushed Smile

This 17 to 19 group are getting tested more frequently than an other group at the moment because of the return to living in halls etc. Srsnds to reason the 'cases' there are up.

monkeytennis97 · 27/09/2020 13:51

Are 17 year olds at uni in Scotland?

@monkeytennis97

Are 17 year olds at uni in Scotland?
Yes.
trouncedaast · 27/09/2020 13:53

I've got three children in 3 different Edinburgh schools, both primary and secondary. It's been handled well. No cases of Covid as yet. Good measures in place across the board. I'm not saying that it won't affect the children at some point, but we are more than two months since schools went back and things have gone really well.
I'm pretty certain the cases stem from university students.
Would be interesting to see the numbers of hospital admissions resulting from the student Covid cases

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2020 13:54

It's not about their hospital admissions , though. It's about spread.

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2020 13:55

Not if they are at school Clarence. Uni perhaps, yes.

SengaMac · 27/09/2020 13:55

Universities have handled it badly if they are offering only online tuition and they didn't make students aware of this.
I would be furious if my DD or DS had gone into this situation only to find they could have studied from home.

Obviously they'd have no 'uni experience' staying at home but they're not exactly getting that, as things are.
