Are you doing anything to your house to make it ready for a second lockdown?

If we go into lockdown again, I’m not doing it without a tumble drier. I can just about cope with clothes on a clothes horse and the radiators in the winter in normal circumstances, but I can’t face it if I’m home all the time.

I’d also like to do a big declutter so it’s easier to keep everything tidy while everyone’s home.

And if I was really splashing out, I’d love to get a deep clean done so everything at least starts off really clean.

Anyone thinking along similar lines? Anything else I could be doing?

Bought an outdoor stove to make outdoor socialising at home more comfortable.

Stocked up on naked wine and wood.

We wanted a new tv unit from ikea to tidy away some of the kids crap, but it’s 2cm too big Sad so trying to think of an alternative solution. We have a large play item dominating our living room which is going in the next few weeks (it’s been rehomed to a local nursery). This should give us more sense of space in the living room. DH and I need to tidy out our wardrobes and I’d love to sort out the loft, but I’m sensing lock down is looming so will have to put that off again. The kids moved from cots to proper beds so we need to get them winter weight duvets.

catsjammies · 25/09/2020 20:18

Have you considered a dehumidifier instead? More environmentally friendly, smaller, cheaper. Not quite as fast at drying clothes but mine will dry 3 loads of washing overnight! Hang before bed and dry after school run.

Looking at redoing the study. It's a small space with funny alcoves, but currently a very under utilised space. DH now WFH for the foreseeable so it makes sense to spend a bit of money and turn the space into a much more functional workspace for the both of us.

NewCatMummy · 25/09/2020 20:24

The wood shed is full so we’ve got heat and can cook if necessary. Got about a hundred unread kindle books, 50kg bread flour and Netflix so I will manage.

killerofmen · 25/09/2020 20:28

I'm in a local lockdown area (Wales so quite strict compared to England). I was back in the office and now at home again with DH. We've been to the tip every lunchtime to declutter the garage. We're hoping to turn it into a more practical space for storage, in turn making more space in the house. We've also bought a chest freezer.

We've bought desks and proper chairs and set up the spare room as a more 'formal' working space. I think I might investigate the tax rebate for homeworking. Previously I though the situation would be temporary so it wasn't worth the hassle. That's obviously not the case.

In the longer term, we'd like to move next year so as long as we're at home during the week we can focus on doing all those little jobs that'll make it a bit more appealing when we put it on the market.

actiongirl1978 · 25/09/2020 20:30

Ordered seasoned wood for the wood burner, cleaned the gutters, fixed all odd jobs in the house, window cleaner booked, all decorating started in the summer finished, lots of jobs lined up for the autumn/winter.

We will revert to local food ordering again and crack on, just with less daylight and more sleep hopefully.

Oh and a big aldi red wine order.

Itllbeaninterestingchristmas · 25/09/2020 20:43

I’m doing all my Christmas shopping early. I’ve got plenty of unread books and craft projects. There’s only one cupboard left to tidy out so there could be some spare time

Rainallnight · 25/09/2020 20:44

Oh gutters! Very good idea

I might buy a fire pit and a gazebo so I can still get fresh air and enjoy being outdoors. Dc are set up for accessing school work. I plan to do a deep clean/ tidy/ tip run so we have more space! Need to buy wine and comfort food. I have at least 4 weeks food in (we’ve had one 5 week isolation, one 2 weeks and a 2 week quarantine so far so this definitely makes sense as until recently deliveries weren’t available!)

actiongirl1978 · 25/09/2020 20:47

@Rainallnight yes I was very satisfied when that was done Grin

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/09/2020 20:47

I decorated, so I'm not sick of looking at the tired paint and wallpaper this time round - something that will look cosier in the winter than the plain cream did.

And we kept back some cupboard staples that we haven't had to use, inc flour, and still have them as we bought things in case of having to self isolate and we haven't....yet.

Howmanysleepsnow · 25/09/2020 20:48

I also need to do lots of work (agency nurse) as I have no income at all if I have to look after sick/ isolating family (or if I’m sick/ isolating).

waitforitwaitforit · 25/09/2020 20:48

If schools were closed I might invest in a tablet for my 3 year old. But as they probably won't be, I'll be at work and the DDs will be at nursery anyway.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 25/09/2020 20:50

I've had some essential repair work done on the house and am aiming to get additional work done asap. Also cleaning and decorating kids rooms so they are nice if school shuts down again.
Am generally decluttering and have been doing so for a while.
Will also do some online Christmas orders and pick up Christmas food a bit at a time whenever I go to the supermarket. I can handle a locked down Christmas, but not without a fuck load of toblerone and booze!

FourTeaFallOut · 25/09/2020 20:55

We've got a mesh WiFi network and upgraded our internet package to take some of the stress out of home schooling if it comes to it again.

FourFlapjacksPlease · 25/09/2020 20:55

The last 6 months at home has meant I have redecorated most of the house, decluttered every cupboard and drawer and deep cleaned the entire house. It currently has 'sleeping with the enemy' vibes and is unsettling my DH and teenage DC.

I only just started working again yesterday and they were all looking forward to messing everything up. Sucks to be them if I get locked up again!

Titsywoo · 25/09/2020 21:01

Not really for a 2nd lockdown but since March we've done lots to our house and garden knowing we'd be spending a lot more time here! DH started a job in my that is full time work from home and I've moved my job to WFH too as the accounts package I use is now online and there is no way to socially distance in my office. So we bought a big t-shaped desk and converted the end of our lounge to a home office. Also got our new utility room set up (needs decorating but is usable as it is). Getting blinds made for the lounge so we don't get glare on our screens when working. Also built veg beds in the garden which have been great through the summer and are keeping us in sweetcorn at the moment! Would love to get a chest freezer but not sure where we would put it so trying to work that out at the moment.

HeyMicky · 25/09/2020 21:02

We bought an exercise bike and a rowing machine. Stocked the oil and firewood. Bought a heated throw

Tappering · 25/09/2020 21:08

We've been gradually increasing our stores of things over the last couple of months - food staples, loo roll, soap, medicines and so on.

Justmuddlingalong · 25/09/2020 21:13

Cozy fleece blankets. Then when the chancer visitors start moaning "but it's cold can we not just come in from the garden", I can launch one at them. Easy to wash and quick to dry. I know that it'll horrify one person in particular. If not the bucket to have a piss in will.

Chocolate4me · 25/09/2020 21:15

Ordered an extra bottle of wine a week so if my food delivery gets limited to a certain amount of items, I don't have to choose between wine and other essentials lol

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/09/2020 21:25

Nothing. We decorated last time (despite some numpty local councillor complaining about on FB about people decorating as it's not a holiday) so there's nothing left to do. Hopefully DH will find something otherwise he'll be bored to tears!

ItAllDepends · 25/09/2020 21:29

I'm going to get a portcullis installed. You can't be too careful.

LetsPlayAGame20 · 25/09/2020 21:49

Nothing as I did all decorating in lockdown.
I've done most of my Xmas shopping as I normally would by now. And wrapped
We did the loft recently.
Only thing I need to ideally do again is the sideboard of doom aka junk drawers but being as I just thought about it chances are ill do it in a minute 😂 because things bother me when it's on my mind.
I did kids wardrobes today and got rid of all summer stuff. Ours we did last week.
Sorted garage last week and put all garden studf away too

scrivette · 25/09/2020 21:55

Cozy fleece blankets are a great idea, I have a few spares in the loft so can bring them down and wash them.
