DS had a text on Monday due to a weird taste and smell issue. He’s otherwise fine. Just got his results and he’s tested positive! He’s in 6th form.
Since Monday, I’ve kept him and the other 2 DC at home with me. Everyone else is ok.
But now I’m shitting myself a bit... will me and DC and DH definitely get it?? How severe will it be?? Agh. So many questions that obviously no one can answer!
Talk me down please MNers

@Bupkis yes and the NHS link also says it. My FILs shielding letter is different, as is the guidance he printed to prove to us he couldn't go in the garden thought he was gonna laminate it at one point

I've just been using the guides on gov.uk but I can see it directly says garden on the nhs website.

We went in the garden when "isolating" anyway, but thanks to FIL and the briefings I thought I was being a rebel Grin

It’s nice to read most people will be fine if they get Covid, most on mumsnet are convinced everyone will have long term health issues 😊

myhobbyisouting · 25/09/2020 12:13

@Alex50 I think the overwhelming majority of those that have actually tested positive are completely fine.

PrivateD00r · 25/09/2020 12:13

That definitely is untrue. However some will have long term issues and no one wants it to be them - hence the annoyance at this DH going out when he should have stayed home, and other such posts. I have never read posts anywhere that say everyone will get very unwell.
elenacampana · 25/09/2020 12:15

Hey love. I can’t tell you how it’ll affect you all if you’ll get it but I can tell you that I tested positive a couple of weeks ago and it really wasn’t so bad. Six members of my family and a friend also got it. Everyone is recovered now and we all had mild to unpleasant symptoms for a day to a week.

We’re absolutely fine and I wish the same to you. It was scary when the tests were coming back positive but I can’t stress enough that it had no detrimental effects.

Take care of yourself x

Money4honey · 25/09/2020 12:15

Thanks everyone. DH is home now and that’s where we’ll stay until we need to. Shopping has been ordered and we’ll be getting a takeaway delivered tonight.
We honestly didn’t think DS had it(felt like I was being a big OTT as he was totally fine-I thought it was sinusitis you be honest). I’ve let all the relevant people know about this so they can take appropriate steps.
What a time to be alive eh!

@myhobbyisouting

"I can tell the OP she's most likely to be seriously ill if you prefer?

But that would be untrue"

Of course it would be untrue. They'll all be absolutely fine, I'm sure. Most people are.

But it's also untrue that you "BIL had it back in April" and youve no issue lying about that strangely

Lying?

OK then...

Babyboomtastic · 25/09/2020 12:21

When you say 'thats where we'll stay until we need to' I assume you mean you'll all be staying in for the duration of the SI period, rather than just when you 'need' to go out?

And it doesn't really matter what your husband does, he can't work out of the house until his confinement is over, in the same way that you can't go for a stroll round the block, or a walk in the countryside.

Remember to tell the takeaway people that you are SI so they can drop it outside, and the same with the supermarket delivery.

Your son will be fine, he's in a very very low risk group.

mediumperiperi · 25/09/2020 12:26

I have kids a similar age. I would quarantine them to their room and leave their meals outside their door and collect laundry and dishes. If you have more than one loo then I'd assign one of them just to ds.

ArabellaScott · 25/09/2020 12:32

Have you got some vitamin D and vitamin C in? Rec that, and drink lots and lots of water, which helps the immune system.

I believe I had it in late March/early April. I won't lie, it was horrible. Worst ill I've been, I think, but also frightening because of lockdown and things were so new and unknown. Things are very different now. There are known treatments. Hospitals are very far from overrun, the health service is running okay.

Most people will be totally fine, and those who have it worse will mostly be okay in the end. Try and chill and not worry too much! If you have been exposed to it, I have to say it's a huge relief once you recover and can presume you (probably) have a measure of immunity to it.

shoofle · 25/09/2020 12:34

Three people in my office of 40 have long covid, just because it isn't reported on to any great extent doesn't mean it isn't prevalent !

shoofle · 25/09/2020 12:34

All of us under 40 and two in their 20s

Hollyhead · 25/09/2020 13:22

To be honest if one person in our household tested positive I'd be getting them to stay out in the garden during the day as much as possible seeing as transmission risk is very low outdoors - I'd be setting up the PC out there on dry days!

UntamedWisteria · 25/09/2020 13:29

DS self isolated in our home while he was waiting for the results of a Covid test (which turned out to be negative) after 3 of his friends had positive results.

He stayed in his room or in the garden (weather was good), used a separate bathroom, and I took him his food to his room or he ate it outside.

Did not want to risk me or DH getting it as we are both in our '50s.

DH & I also avoided seeing other people outside the family as a precaution.

UntamedWisteria · 25/09/2020 13:29

DS did this for a week, and it was fine.

JinglingHellsBells · 25/09/2020 13:31

@Money4honey has your son downloaded the nhs covid app? He should and that will alert people in your area. you all need to download it if possible and complete your details.

I can understand someone working if for example they were chopping down trees and in a forest all day, completely on their own and had enough fuel in their van for 2 weeks and peed in the wood.

JinglingHellsBells · 25/09/2020 13:33

and I'm not condoning working at all- just saying how someone could work outside in total isolation and think it was ok

BatShite · 25/09/2020 13:41

Seems a bit luck of the draw tbh. MIL has many health issues and is 66, frail as anything and usually even colds make her drastically ill, sometimes requiring hospital. She would be one of the people you would assume would end up in hospital or worse for sure. She got it, and had no signs of illness whatsoever. The only way she knew she had it was because of a test..

Meanwhile, me and DH caught it (presumably from her as it was arund the same time, but dont relaly know where nor care) and were both laid in bed for 2 days, followed by a week or so of feeling really shitty. My taste is still not 100% even now, months later.

We assume kids have had it too as we couldn't exactly avoid them as they are young. They didn't have any symptoms at any point either.

I am sure it will be fine, try not to worry. Theres not really anything you can do about it either way.

BatShite · 25/09/2020 13:43

I would also say its not definite, but extremely likely if he is positive you will get it. If the reasons for the rules are to be believed, along with the sheer amount of people who have became ill after houseparties and such, then it seems its likely to spread even with just 15 mins in the same room indoors.

ShoppingAllDay · 25/09/2020 14:03

My friend and her ds tested positive. DH and other ds tested negative.

Now that would definitely be a 'risky due to chances of an accident' situation!!

Jrobhatch29 · 25/09/2020 14:12

Recently I've known a man test positive as didnt pass it to his wife or 3 kids... 2 kids test positive but parents didn't get it... And a mam who didn't pass to his ECV wife. It isnt inevitable

U8myufo · 25/09/2020 14:12

I hope you manage to escape it. I had it really early in the year but somehow my partner and child managed to not contact it

Jrobhatch29 · 25/09/2020 14:12

My ds (18) caught Covid he was very sick in bed for 13 days but none of us in the house caught it, although i did have a headache, slight sore throat and very mild diarrhea for two days about 5 days after he became sick so i do wonder if that was it.
