Wales half term holiday cottage- anyone else??

ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 08:57

We’ve booked a holiday cottage in Pembrokeshire over half term- we booked it immediately after a stress free 10 days in France at the end of July when the future of holiday bookings seemed to be improving...

Anyway, what do you think are the chances of travel to Wales being allowed ( we are in SE England)?

Anyone in a similar situation?

We’ve got some Covid cover within the insurance but if the government forbids travel it’ll be up to the agency to help us rebook ( we chose a company which advertise their helpfulness in this area).

Not feeling worried about cancelling/ postponing but wanted to chat about possible outcomes.

Anyone similarly affected who also thought booking a half term cottage was a good idea?!

Hard to say... Would the person (s)/agency you booked through allow you to change the date to next year if you can't go?
Asking as we were in Wales at the end of the summer and the cottage owner (when we booked) had asked us if, in the event we were unable to travel, we'd like to defer.

ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 09:08

Yes- they advertise this specifically, saying that they rebook where needed. Eg they are currently saying on there home page that they’re helping people currently who have bookings for 7+ people.

I changed my booking to next June. I'm just not in the mood with all the uncertainty but I do think it will be fine OP.

We’re supposed to go to Yorkshire in half term

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2020 09:25

We had a cottage booked in Pembrokeshire for May and the company were very helpful in letting us change the booking to September. We were there the week before last, had a lovely time, and thought the Welsh pubs, restaurants etc. even more careful than in England re Covid. Things do seem to have ramped up quite a bit in the past week though so I don't know what to suggest apart from trying to re book for next year.

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 25/09/2020 09:26

At the moment Pembrokeshire still has a low level of Covid so it may well still be ‘open’.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2020 09:26

We are booked into a Yorkshire B&B for a few days in two weeks' time. What will actually happen is anybody's guess.

ScribblyGum · 25/09/2020 09:29

Yes we are due to go to the Lleyn for October half term as we do every year.
We are monumentally antisocial bastards though and the cottage is in the middle of nowhere so apart from a few visits into the local shops for milk, bread and beer I think the chances of us giving it to, or getting it from the locals is vanishing small.
Will be gutted it we can’t go as Autumn is our favourite time there, perfect walking weather.

Wishforanishwishdiash · 25/09/2020 09:31

We are booked into bluestone at half term and I wonder too. We live in N Wales.

Right now we have an "only essential journeys" policy in Wales so technically it would be against the rules to go today, but not completely because Pembrokeshire is not in extra lockdown, and we are not in extra lockdown in the North. It is all a bit vague. Today, I would go.

In three weeks, I am not so sure. The uni students have just arrived, and all hell is about to break loose Covid-wise. . I think that might do that circuit-breaker lockdown in Wales for two weeks at half term.

Lovemusic33 · 25/09/2020 09:34

We are booked for a cottage near Pembrokeshire too, I’m not getting my hopes up as I may get cancelled, more worried about the 3+ hour drive and not being able to stop at services. We don’t plan on going anywhere busy whilst there, mainly walking and relaxing so I don’t see it as being risky regarding covid.

Starlightstarbright1 · 25/09/2020 09:34

I was planning going on holiday uk half term ( not yet booked)
We are going this weekend as i really don't think we will get away half term

diplodocusinermine · 25/09/2020 09:49

We're in Pembrokeshire at the moment - isolated cottage, miles of walking without meeting a soul. We've not been in pubs/restaurants, just the odd takeaway coffee. We booked a timed ticket for Pembroke castle - quiet and everyone following the rules so hopefully they won't need to increase lockdown measures in this area.

ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 10:23

Interesting...lots in similar position.

I thought the essential journeys only thing was only for worse affected parts of Wales?

Juniperandrage · 25/09/2020 10:29

Won't you have to drive through the areas in local lockdown to get there though?

Viv0321 · 25/09/2020 10:46

Can you not drive through the lockdown areas then?

Juniperandrage · 25/09/2020 10:48

Not for non essential journeys

ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 10:55

Does that effectively mean the M4 would be closed? Or is it only more ‘local’ journeys that are forbidden?

OP posts:
ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 10:56

Does travelling in a motorway without stopping count as going into a restricted area?

OP posts:
Petitmum · 25/09/2020 10:56

As the rules stand at the moment you could travel to the cottage but who knows what it will be like by half term! I live in Wales in an area not currently in lockdown but things are changing fast. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we have widespread restrictions by then, I was hoping for a few days near Pembroke but we will have to wait and see.

Juniperandrage · 25/09/2020 10:58

I don't know to be honest, sorry. I live in Caerphilly and there are sporadic police checks to make sure people have a good reason for traveling but i cant tell you about motorways

ChickenNotSoLittle · 25/09/2020 11:02

My guess would be that motorway travel is more likely to be seen as work related and I can’t really envisage police pulling people over to check on such a fast road. Obviously that’s just a guess!

Viv0321 · 25/09/2020 11:05

Juniper- can you link that info please?

Yetiyoga · 25/09/2020 11:20

I didn't think non essential journeys weren't allowed. He said this week to think about where those journeys may end up. So I think that means, self catering caravan/ cottage is fine. But going somewhere really busy, think twice.
