Are we allowed 7 people in our house in different rooms?

DSD and her BF have come to stay this weekend. We also have DD and DSS and me and DH at home, so that makes 6 of us. DD wants her BF to stay over tomorrow night. I can't figure out whether that's allowed or not. It would mean 7 people in the house, but in no sense would we be "gathering" DD and her BF would get in late and go straight to her room. Rest of us probably we wouldn't even see him. Is that allowed? Or are people considered to be "gathering" simply by being in the same house? We're in England by the way and not in an area with any local lockdown

No

RepeatSwan · 25/09/2020 00:56

Clearly the idea behind the rule of six is it is six.

1,2,3,4,5,6.

Not 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

There's potentially a technical get out. There usually is!

But the spirit is it is six.

Chessie678 · 25/09/2020 01:09

I don’t think it’s a technicality at all. The government has good lawyers. If they had intended that the rule should apply to people who are in the same house but in separate rooms not interacting that’s what they should have written.

Chloemol · 25/09/2020 01:11

Which bit of rule of six don’t you get? Clues in the word six

Is seven six? No it’s seven, one more that six, so no the bf can’t stay

gavisconismyfriend · 25/09/2020 01:16

Isn’t it 6 from no more than 2 households? In which case 7 from 3 households would break the rules on 2 counts. Couldn’t your DD stay at her boyfriends?

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 25/09/2020 01:20

I dont think its clear that you cant meet friends in the garden while your kids are asleep upstairs for example (so more than 6 in total 4 adults outside and adult and 3 kids inside. )

They dont explocitly say this and surely the "gathering" of 4 adults outside is less than 6 and inside is then 3. Or 4 if the adult goes inside. If the outdoor garden visitors arent even coming indoors how can it be a problem.

lunalulu · 25/09/2020 01:21

Is it maybe a support bubble? So ok?

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 25/09/2020 01:21

Gaviscon there isnt a 2 household rule in England.

redlockscelt · 25/09/2020 01:26

No. Allow me to elaborate: 7 > 6

Jenasaurus · 25/09/2020 01:29

@30under

No. All live human bodies in your house count.
So, one solution is to kill one, who is your least favourite
Pixxie7 · 25/09/2020 01:31

No it’s six people.

avamiah · 25/09/2020 01:38

I’m in London which has just commenced in my opinion it’s “second lock down “.
Unless your a idiot OP it’s 6 only .
6
6
6
6
6
Have 7 in your home if you want but get ready to pay a high fine as you would be breaking the Law .

kazzer2867 · 25/09/2020 02:14

Furries
Flipping Nora, how hard is it to count to 6? I mean, I know the rule
are crap/divisive/frustrating (delete as applicable).

But I fail to understand how anyone can not count to 6!!

Just in case of doubt - no, it’s not ok. 7 is more than 6.

This^

How many more threads are there going to be asking about the rule of 6 in England to justify them breaking the rules. This is getting tedious now. Come on people, 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Not difficult is it.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 25/09/2020 02:36

Honestly people around me think it does mean "in your house or garden". Not house and garden. So a gathering in your garden where thwy dont come indoors to use the loo etc is separate to those inside.

Logically, it is.... could be meeting on the footpath but have moved over to the front garden!

I know its the total on your property but I dont think thay is clear from their simplified guidance as they dont think kids asleep indoors count in their outdoor gathering.

KitKatastrophe · 25/09/2020 02:57

Under the guidance your DDs should be social distancing from their boyfriends at all times. I doubt this is the case if they're teenagers sharing a bedroom overnight Grin

Monty27 · 25/09/2020 03:39

@LemonTT

The answer is no.

6 people in a house including grounds. All humans count as one in England. Even twins. Pets are not counted even though your cat may be Covid positive.

Grin Very funny 😅

OP I wouldn't sweat it. Separate towels constant handwashing and masks if you feel it's necessary 👍

Kisskiss · 25/09/2020 04:30

I’m sure the legal loophole pointed out above, is meant as a ‘get out card’ for households with more than 7 members? The government isn’t going to force a family with 5 teenage children to push one out of the nest..
In your case OP you are clearly having more than 6 people, coming from different households, please don’t

MrsHJFL · 25/09/2020 04:50

Unfortunately no this won't be allowed

Even though they will be in separate rooms, there are still areas of your house you will all be using, even if not at the same time (kitchen, toilet, hallway etc)

The virus can stay in the air for 24 hours, so even if your not in the same room, walking through a space someone else has walked in previously makes it risky.

Also, in England children count in the '6 people'
Yes other parts of the UK, children under 12 do not count, but seeing as your youngest is 17 that rule is irrelevant anyway

Sorry :( I would just tell your daughter that unfortunately it's the law and there's nothing you can do. Xx

eurochick · 25/09/2020 05:13

I've read the legislation and would be inclined to agree with the lawyer above that this would not be a gathering for the purposes of the legislation. So long as you all didn't congregate for breakfast or something. People seem to be adding their own extra rules that are not in the actual law, like they did with the hour once a day limit on exercise that was nowhere in the lockdown legislation.

But it's all new and no court has interpreted it yet, so if you are worried don't do it.

AgentProvocateur · 25/09/2020 05:16

@raddledoldmisanthropist has hit the nail on the head.

yawnsvillex · 25/09/2020 05:33

Just do it. Even if your issued a fine it would need to go to court to enforce the fine.

Torvean32 · 25/09/2020 05:35

Its 6 in a house except where the household is larger.
If it went by rooms you coild have 24 ppl in a 1 bedroom house.

Be lucky you dont live in Scotland when you get restrictions due to high areas NS wont restrict on thrir own. There's places in Scotland with no cases who have restrictions.

Covid restrictions have been way harder in Scotland dedpute Enhkabd much hugher rates and restriction attempts that dont work.

Nikori · 25/09/2020 05:36

I wonder how the Queen copes with this. Surely with her staff there must be more than 6 people in the house at one time.

Rosehip10 · 25/09/2020 05:43

What do you not understand about 6 in a house? Follow the rules or don't, but why post? Does it honestly validate your life if some random on MN says. "I would OP, the rules are crap, Boris is a knob etc" Hmm

RaspberrySkies · 25/09/2020 05:46

🤦🏻‍♀️ Its called the rule of SIX for a reason. Not SEVEN. The answer is obvs no.
