Is it true that Scottish students are not allowed to go home for weekends etc as it counts as mixing households?

Before we even move on to MHs dastardly plan to keep them all in halls over Christmas.
I know there is the option to detain people under the Coronavirus act if they are believed to be infectious, but these students are mostly not.
What would happen if an ill studeng tried to return home to parents? Fines? Or seen as reasonable and overlooked?

The school year is different in Scotland and children generally start school younger. Usually about half of P1s are 4 when they start

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 24/09/2020 18:17

Yes, that's correct, a 17-year-old Scottish person cannot buy cigarettes. They can join the forces, however (they cannot be in combat until 18).

AgentProvocateur · 24/09/2020 18:19

You can also go to uni after 5th year, so if your birthday is between Sept and Feb, you’ll be 16.

cardibach · 24/09/2020 18:21

Ok, yes, it’s possible to be 17 in Scotland, I’d forgotten that. I’ve always thought it was madness due to the drinking culture in Freshers’ etc. Doesn’t alter the fact that nobody is 16.

Thank you batshit

So the same as england then, i know the nhs treat 16 year olds as adults in england...very nearly backfired horribly for ds1

YardleyX · 24/09/2020 18:23

And now they’ve been told they’re not allowed to go to pubs as well.

Close the pubs then, if that’s the case.

Pubs are safe enough to be open, as long as you’re not also aged 17-23 and studying a course at university level?!?!?

What absolute bullshit.

Never before have I seen one section of society penalised so much.

sergeantmajormum · 24/09/2020 18:25

^^ This in spades

HelloMissus · 24/09/2020 18:27

And what is meant to happen to students when halls of residence close at Christmas and/or student loans have run out?

Will Nicola be giving everyone a wee Christmas bonus?

NameChange9824 · 24/09/2020 18:31

Yes, you can be. I went to university in Scotland at 16. I went after 5th year, and my birthday was between Sept and Feb - December. Most of my friends were 17, but I wasn't the only 16 year old at all.
StatisticalSense · 24/09/2020 18:33

Hopefully Nicola is prosecuted for gross negligence manslaughter for every student that takes their own life because of these restrictions.
As the first minister of Scotland she clearly owes the nation a duty of care, the rules have clearly been implemented without full consideration of the impacts which makes her negligent, the deaths would have been avoided in the absence of the rules which mean she caused the death and the breach is clearly strong enough that the reasonable person could foresee that it would cause deaths making it gross enough to be criminal.

YardleyX · 24/09/2020 18:37

Fully agree, Statistical

Crinklyoldhag · 24/09/2020 18:38

If theyve been told to isolate then no they can’t go out and this is so they don’t spread the virus. Ffs that’s a given. I’d hope you’d given them common sense and common decency before they left home.

If they’re not in places that are isolating en masse then they live by the same rules as anyone else in Scotland. If they’re over 18 they can go to the pub which will close at 10pm - so plenty of time to get pissed and laid. They’ve been urged not to... so politely asked with a kind of urgency but it’s not law. It’s university policy. It’s common sense.

I understand parents are protective of little tarquin and Tabitha, particularly if they have a scary virus and you’re not there for them but if your cherub has been told to isolate and you also live in Scotland then they cannot go home or they will be joining your household as a member of an external household and taking that virus with them. Shit happens when you grow up and leave home and that’s what they are now, grown up. Shit has happened and it’s shit. Such is life.

Now I’m a student in Scotland. MUCH older than your average fresher but I have been receiving all the emails the university has sent out and they’ve all been extremely comprehensive about how students should be behaving and what they can and cannot do. They’ve also been clear about their yellow and red card systems from the start. If the students haven’t been reading the communication thenwhose fault is that?

Enrico · 24/09/2020 18:39

Hopefully MN will delete your post for irresponsibly waving around the threat of suicide - which is massively triggering and deeply irresponsible - as a reaction to some people who have infected a fair chunk of Glasgow being told not to go to the pub.

Enrico · 24/09/2020 18:40

That was to @StatisticalSense.

YardleyX · 24/09/2020 18:46

Think some of you need to read the latest news before posting rubbish.

Students cannot go to a pub.

cantkeepawayforever · 24/09/2020 18:49

Surely every student returning to university this year was completely aware that they would

a) Have to isolate for 14 days for any contact with a positive case and
b) Be unable to socialise except within the guidance current in their country at the time and
c) be unlikely to be able to return home during term time or beyond, to avoid moving infection around the country?

Certainly DS went back to his university completely aware of all of the above. Unless the entire institution is closed down, we were well aware when he left that we may not see him until next Easter, and he has a stock of dried / tinned foods with him to manage at least the initial phase of any isolation.

AlwaysLatte · 24/09/2020 18:51

I really feel for those poor kids :-(

HelloMissus · 24/09/2020 19:02

can’tkeep many colleges and halls close over Christmas so I’m not sure where students are meant to go. Or what they should live on when their loan runs out.

Colleges and halls won't close if the non-return comes into force, surely? In the same way, some remained open throughout the pandemic for students who just couldn't leave.

The financial situation is obviously very difficult, especially since the types of jobs many students rely on to keep afloat have largely disappeared. I know that if DS doesn't come home - very likely - we will send him what we would have spent on his food etc at home to supplement his funding at university.

HelloMissus · 24/09/2020 19:27

cant many colleges and halls don’t have year round staff. The catered halls certainly don’t. And there are no kitchens for students to take over food prep etc

Enrico · 24/09/2020 19:31

I'm sure they'll sort something out rather than let it go all I Am Legend.

Wait vampires???

Where are the vampires coming from 😱

What briefing did i miss

(Joking)

HelloMissus · 24/09/2020 20:07

enrico nah.
They’ll close as planned and the students will go home.

I was 16 when I started uni. I turned 17 three months in. I went to uni straight after 5th year.
MummyPharm · 24/09/2020 20:18

Yip I was also 16 when I started uni as I went straight from 5th year. Six of us in my flat in halls and we were all under 18. Cant imagine us all being told we weren’t allowed to go home, will be really tough for a lot of them.
