Is this ok ? Or no ?

Despite the mountains of information online I can't find a definitive cut off.

  1. But if you think they are unwell, I would class it as a temp. I know my own kids and their normal temps are different!
AriettyHomily · 24/09/2020 13:13

37.8 they wont let them into school here.

slipperywhensparticus · 24/09/2020 13:13

I thought the cut off for covid WAS 37.8? That's what nhs 101 told me for ear thermometers anyway

Bupkis · 24/09/2020 13:16

No.
37.8 is a temperature.

37.8 is the trigger point for isolating and testing. You should be contacting anyone who lives with you to come home now, and then organise a test for you DS. Sorry Flowers

Bupkis · 24/09/2020 13:17

...also ds's paediatrician and GP both told us 37.8 is considered a temperature.

Bupkis · 24/09/2020 13:18

...yes, hope you're all ok Flowers

Lougle · 24/09/2020 13:20

To be clear, the Government have replaced 'hot to touch/37.8°c' with 'hot to touch, you do not need to take your temperature'. But all guidance in other areas says 37.8°c.

StatisticalSense · 24/09/2020 13:21

In covid terms it requires a test, but more generally a fever of that level in an elder child or teenager is unlikely to be a cause for further medical concern and doesn't require medicating (other than a covid test) in the absence of the child being particularly uncomfortable

TitsOutForHarambe · 24/09/2020 13:21

That is definitely classed as a temperature. It doesn't necessarily mean anything serious on it's own, but it's enough to worry people in times of Covid. Might affect whether they can go to school - I would call and check.

Stinkyguineapig · 24/09/2020 13:52

😱shit, I thought it was 38°.
My DS is always warm, we call him our hot water bottle in the winter. His temp was 37.8 the other day but he didnt feel "hot" or in any way unwell, so I was mindful that that was near fever (not realising it actually was) and checked it later and it was lower, but didnt do anything about it.

CheeseToasty · 24/09/2020 19:14

My daughter had a fever ranging from 37.7 - 38.2 over the weekend. She also had a runny nose so felt it was just a cold. As I wasn’t sure what to do I rang 111 and they said to see how she was the following day and if she was better not to isolate or test. Fever was gone the following day so I find nothing.

Bupkis · 24/09/2020 19:51

I'm actually really shocked by things like 111 saying that.
The advice given is to self isolate and test if you have a temperature....it doesn't matter if it only lasts a day.

Completely agree. I have spoken to people who have only had a fever for a couple of hours and tested positive.

A temperature of, or over, 37.8 is considered a fever in terms of Covid and you should seek a test.

estherfrewen · 24/09/2020 20:37

My DS tested positive this week. Temp 37.8 for about an hour (when I booked test) and no temp since. Sore throat and headache only other symptoms.

Lougle · 24/09/2020 21:23

I'm amazed that 111 said that. They made us isolate because DD2 had a very mild cough, saying that isolated coughs every 20 minutes was 'continuous'.

booboo24 · 24/09/2020 21:55

My natural temperature is never lower than 37.4, so i can hit 37.8 quite easily and know I'm not ill, everyone's baseline is different though, and for my children I would stick to the guidelines of 37.8 isolate and test. For myself I would have to use 38 or else i'd be in permanent isolation! Hope everything is OK

cherrytreeblossom · 24/09/2020 22:55

Thanks for all responses

I've checked temp regularly since and it's been 37.7 or lower

Now got a bit snotty and bunged up and says legs are aching so think it's a bog standard cold

A mild cough has developed today and one of the temp checks was 37.9

Trying to get a test

AliciaWhiskers · 25/09/2020 20:12

Good luck with getting a test. You all need to isolate now for 14 days (unless test is negative)

cherrytreeblossom · 26/09/2020 17:42

Managed to get test this morning - the waiting begins!

The cough is worse but generally feeling better

My 9yo son was 38.3 last Sunday and bunged up + sniffles. I rang school on Monday to say I'd be keeping him home. They said as long as no coughing send him in when temperature gone, he went back in on Tuesday as all better. I have it now, no temp just achy, sneezing and bunged up. Think it's just a cold.

Aragog · 26/09/2020 19:31

Backyard - why on earth is your school ignoring the advice??

Let's hope it is just a cold!

As a clinically vulnerable teacher teaching many children every week with no SDjng I find it scary that schools are encouraging parents to ignore the general rules. Even more so when we know that many children test positive with a range of other symptoms and not just a cough.

The school is wrong and not following guidance.
