Is this ok ? Or no ?

Despite the mountains of information online I can't find a definitive cut off.

Yes, 37.8 is the trigger for a test, especially if a mild cough has also developed....sorry.....

CraftyGin · 26/09/2020 19:46

Not sure what is confusing. It’s been 37.8 since the start of the pandemic.

Bupkis · 26/09/2020 20:13

@Backyard72

My 9yo son was 38.3 last Sunday and bunged up + sniffles. I rang school on Monday to say I'd be keeping him home. They said as long as no coughing send him in when temperature gone, he went back in on Tuesday as all better. I have it now, no temp just achy, sneezing and bunged up. Think it's just a cold.
Fuck me, it is this sort of thing that makes it unsafe for ds to go to school. We are walking a tightrope at the moment, trying to keep him in but on alert to pull him out. The more I read stuff like this, the more I think we should just keep him home.
Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 20:16

Think the every class would have closed down they said loads had it and just a short cold.

Kitcat122 · 26/09/2020 20:17

I have had Covid and my temp was 37.7.

Bupkis · 26/09/2020 20:20

Temperature
New, continuous cough
Change or lack of taste/smell
= get a test and self isolate

Your school was wrong.

Was that your only symptom kitcat?

Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 20:23

Where does school guidance come from? Do they all get the same?

Bupkis · 26/09/2020 20:30

Yes
It is the Government guidelines issued to every school.

myhobbyisouting · 26/09/2020 20:31

"I'm amazed that 111 said that"

I'm not. They told my friend (I heard this as I was on FaceTime while she rang) that her husband could go to work whilst they waited for the test results Hmm

And at the test centre there was a delay. She commented "oh no, I'm bursting for the loo" and they said to use the one in the KFC at the end of the car park!

Aragog · 26/09/2020 21:02

It's government guidelines and it applies to everyone - adult or child, and any setting. Not just for schools.

The school does not know 'it's just a cold' - they don't have magical Covid testing powers through seeing a child.

A temperature = testing or isolating.

It's about protecting everyone.

Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 21:02

Seems like there is a lot of confusion as to when to isolate / test in less clear cases. Can someone post me an official govt link showing when I should test/isolate. Do you think I should have him / myself tested now?

Aragog · 26/09/2020 21:09

In England, when to isolate:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/

When to test is when you have any of the three main symptoms - attached.

So a high temperature is a key symptom.
At this point you should self isolate and get a test.

So in your situation at the point if your ds having a key symptom - the high temperature...

He and your whole household should have self isolated.

Your da should have had a test.

If the test returned negative your child can return to school and the household can stop isolating so long as no one has any symptoms now.

If the test returned positive your child just isolate for 10 days from the start of symptoms and the rest of the household is 14 days from start of his symptoms. If none else developed symptoms in that time you come out of isolation after 14 days.

You don't have a key symptom by the sounds of it so you don't need to test.

Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 21:13

OK will phone 111 to get info as the website says test needs to be done within 5 days of symptoms and my son is just past that. Thanks.

gluteustothemaximus · 26/09/2020 21:19

You wouldn't believe the amount of parents phoning in saying 'he/she has a high temp, but I think it's just a cold/cough/flu, and not covid'

Hmm
Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 21:44

Yeah I think when I spoke to his school on Monday and they said it's just a cold that's going they convinced me that was what it was. Covid was certainly not what I thought.

Anyway I just spoke to 119 and they said testing has to be done within 5 days so we can't test, just to keep an eye on him though it was most likely just a cold. They said isolation was not needed.

Bupkis · 26/09/2020 22:11

119 said not to self isolate?!
These are the gov guidelines of when to self isolate, for 14 days for whole household from start of symptoms (10 days for the person who has symptoms)
If even 119 are advising going against gov guidelines then we really are fucked.

Backyard72 · 26/09/2020 22:45

Yup that's what they said. Aside from my son being in school we haven't been out or met anyone during the last week so we'll continue for another week. I'll ring school again on Monday and speak to the head this time to double check what we should do.

Bupkis · 26/09/2020 22:58

Well your son's school, going by their history are probably going to tell you to send him in...but they would be wrong.

What you should do, and should have done, according to the Government guidelines, is kept him off from Monday morning, telling school that he has a symptom of coronavirus (A temperature) then tried to get a test, whilst the whole household self isolated (ie all of you stayed in, not going out anywhere, except your garden if you have one). If you couldn't get a test....or now, as you haven't had a test within 5 days... proving your son negative - your son would have to stay off until next Thurs (1st), and the rest of the household would have to stay in until the Monday after (Oct 5th...obviously, if your son can't get in on his own, or be picked up by a friend, he'd have to stay off school until the 5th as well)

Your school were very wrong, telling you to send him, and not advising you to get a test.

cherrytreeblossom · 27/09/2020 12:13

My husband is NHS and his boss has asked him to get a test even though he doesn't have symptoms
