What style of mask let’s you talk without impediment?

I’m really struggling with the rapid conversation required in the school run queue and any of the masks I have 😬. I end up inhaling the bloody things or them riding up or riding down and I end up fiddling with it when I want to just leave it alone.

I also need one that works with glasses. Mine keep steaming up constantly. Any recommendations ?

What about one of those plastic visor things

Fyzz · 24/09/2020 13:29

Assuming you want fabric. I find that the shaped ones look nicer but ride up badly.
Pleated ones with a nose bar seem to stay in place better. Make sure you bend the nose bar firmly into a ^ shape.
I've also found that some very cheap stretchy ones from Lidl are comfortable and stay in place.

Imtoooldforallthis · 24/09/2020 13:32

The best I can do is use disposable ones (although I do wash these) with the metal at the bottom with a pleat in the metal, it seems to stop it riding up so much.

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/09/2020 16:47

I was wondering about the three dimensional ones I keep seeing. It’s a bloody expensive business buying the masks when they don’t seem to sit on your face right.

I bought a pack of 2 from Poundland (£2) They're a stretchy material and quite tight, meaning they don't move much.
They had various colours, including leopard skin which looked hideous Grin but I just bought 1 black and 1 white. They wash well so bargain.

I know what you mean at the school gate. Any animated talking and the disposable ones won't stay put on my face.

You could try making one. There are easy instructions on YouTube. I used part of a sleeve from a top, double layered it, sewed a hem and cut off the stretchy ear straps from a disposable mask to sew on.

Quite pleased with the effort and the bonus is you can cut it to fit your own face. Mine is a black and white spotty material. The other thing I've noticed is that at the school gate it's all pretty patterned masks or designer ones. I feel I fit in a bit more with my patterned one..sheep that I am!

I have some Boden ones and they stay put fine when I'm talking. They have the bendy metal nose bit.

TartanDMs · 26/09/2020 21:07

One that works with glasses - got mine from etsy shop - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/lindyloucrafts23 after a couple of people mentioned them on here. Have found them very comfy and don't steam my specs up. DD likes the kids ones too from there.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/09/2020 21:29

I bought mine from Troop London. They still move around a bit but not as bad as others. I can’t wear anything tight across my face so the do for me.

Fluandseptember · 26/09/2020 21:33

I find the 'duck bill' shape works best. Those clear visor things have been shown to have NO effect at all against any sort of airborne particles - they only stop people actually spitting (accidentally) in your eyes...

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 26/09/2020 22:15

fluandseptember what do you mean by duck billed? I've seen ones that look like sanitary towels and ones that look like bra cups.

ceeveebee · 26/09/2020 22:31

Oh I find that the best thing to do is avoid speaking to anyone at the school run queue 😂
But seriously I have some from M&S and find them easy to talk in

justanotherneighinparadise · 27/09/2020 07:38

There are some that are described as ‘axe’ those seem to create a cup affect which I can imagine might let your mouth move. I ordered a nose shaped one which I think might be the ‘duck bill’ a previous poster described so I’m going to see how I get on with that.

I bought some off a local person on fb. They are the pleated style ones but I bought teen size as the standard adult size ones are too big for me. I wear glasses and they rarely fog up when I'm wearing a mask. I met my friend the other day and we were chatting outside with masks on for at least half an hour.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 27/09/2020 07:52

I have made some pleated style ones out of silk & flannelette with a metal nose strip and adjustable ear straps. They are larger than the medical style ones so cover almost ear to ear and tuck right under my chin.

Talking isn’t a problem and they don’t ride up or down. I get a bit of fogging of glasses when moving into warmer or more humid areas, but pretty pleased on the whole.

Itstooloudinhere · 27/09/2020 07:53

They're really heavy duty but I swear by my screwfix rubber dust mask. No tickling nose, free breathing and talking. Look ridiculous though.

DonLewis · 27/09/2020 07:57

these ones are good. I bought them to teach in the seal really well around the nose, so help with glasses.

Magissa · 27/09/2020 08:40

I also wear glasses. If you get a good fit around the nose it helps. My best mask to date is from Etsy. It goes under my chin and feels secure. DH who hates wearing masks also wears this comfortably and he wears glasses too. I like having the filter pocket for extra protection.

I also got these mask frames. They are good for keeping the mask away from your mouth so you don't sound so muffled when you speak. If you put them into hot water you can shape them to your face.

Is that a valve on the front? If so, all your exhaled air is shooting out unfiltered towards other people. It will protect you, but not others, and so is not fulfilling the role of a face covering.

The plastic visors do nothing at all to stop the spread of the virus. They are 100% ineffective.

The public has been told not to wear masks like this, with valves. They protect you but do not protect anyone else! Please get another mask.

Rushjob · 27/09/2020 09:48

People have been told any bit of old cloth is fine but then are told the respirator ones aren’t??!

I did wonder about those frames Magissa. I’ve popped them in my basket 👌

Visors are 100% ineffective? Not necessarily. www.bbc.com/future/article/20200806-are-face-shields-effective-against-covid-19

homemadecommunistrussia · 27/09/2020 10:07

these have a bit more room for your mouth to move. I made my own, but you can buy them from etsy and probably elsewhere, just search for 3d mask.

Havent tried that style yet so it’s on my list to try 😀
