I shall be crossing off the days. The spring will be better won't it?😥😥😩

I bloody hope so, I'm not sure anyone I know can take much more in terms of restrictions.

If it's still all gone to shit and people are still fear mongering and we're still in some form of lockdown by next spring I honestly think I'll just throw the towel in and say fuck it. I appreciate why we are doing it all, but I'm fed up of living a crappy half life. Sad

Anyone who thinks it will be only 6 months I believe is deluded in the same way as Boris saying it would be over by November! I say that as someone also in the CEV shielding list sadly. I would think of were lucky April, more likely May... 🤔
Whirlwind14 · 23/09/2020 22:12

I was thinking of setting up a countdown yesterday. Today I’m thinking 6 months is only the start of it.... when oh when will this end??

ChaosContinues · 23/09/2020 22:18

I think if we all buckle down - social distance, masks and hand washing - and get on with it then 6 months will be the max.
They are in expectation management mode.
I have no wish fo catch it but even more reluctant to spread it.
Onwards.......
Roll on spring!

PivotPivott · 23/09/2020 22:18

It's probably to cover the colder weather, no? Who knows in all honesty. Wash your hands, wear your mask, keep your distance and hope other people do the same! Sad

RepeatSwan · 23/09/2020 22:20

I think we have to take each day as it comes.

I am focussing on making Christmas as nice as possible and have started counting down to that, because I have control over that.

Counting down to something I have no control over would just upset me if it changes Sad

TinySleepThief · 23/09/2020 22:20

Sadly I think this is naive. I think all the restrictions are going to do is delay the pandemic further and in 6 months even if everyone followed the rules to the letter it will still increase exponentially when we all start reducing restrictions.

This. I'm giving it till March then I'm done Sad
deflationexasperation · 23/09/2020 22:21

Not a bad idea, I'll be counting from October.

deflationexasperation · 23/09/2020 22:24

Tiny, all we are doing is treading water and buying time until a break through happens.
I'm sure something will be forthcoming very soon.
All the worlds best scientists are on it and by April, the weather will be on our side too.
By the law of averages even government cock ups can't go on for much longer! They will get better at it.
Something will give, break change it always does.

2020goawaynow · 23/09/2020 22:25

Atleast maybe wait until lockdown #2 comes then we can start counting down!
These restrictions are only being put in place so that when lockdown #2 comes they can say well this is the last resort we've tried everything else first and it's still not working.
However I do dream a vaccines appears in the next month and I also pray I'm wrong.

TinySleepThief · 23/09/2020 22:29

I'm sure something will be forthcoming very soon.

I really wish I had your optimism but realistically I don't think much is going to happen soon, even with all the top scientists trying to work on a vaccine these things dont just happen in months, they often take years. I'm fully aware it's a serious situation but if I'm being truly honest I just don't want to exist for months or years to come I want to live.

islockdownoveryet · 23/09/2020 22:30

So have we decided that it's all over by March ? Just so I can book next years holiday .Hmm

Qasd · 23/09/2020 22:31

Umm boris told us 12 weeks to get on top initially and that was wrong I think six months may be optimistic to be honest!

Oly4 · 23/09/2020 22:33

The six month timescale is for a vaccine, there are loads in final stage clinical trials.. keep the faith!
TinySleep there are many interviews online with the vaccine researchers where they explain by how throwing everything at this (and billions of pounds) and by using existing vaccine technology, the timeline has been compressed

Inkpaperstars · 24/09/2020 03:53

I get why people are saying they'll give it till March then chuck it in, but if infection rates are bad then someone can abandon compliance all they want...it isn't going to get their life back to normal while that is going on.

jackfruitz · 24/09/2020 04:16

The problem are people not following the guidelines. I know a friend from the north east who has done a road trip all round the country despite the area being on lockdown. Another friend who went on holiday and didn’t bother to do a two week quarantine and went straight out on a pub crawl when he got back. If people aren’t putting the effort in to avoid spreading the virus I can’t see it going away any time soon and the restrictions will get tighter, making it unfair for those of us doing our bit to follow the guidelines.

It'll be ok for people who still have jobs and are keeping a roof over their head.

For those that don't manage to maintain this, no it won't be better in six months time.

Yetiyoga · 24/09/2020 06:32

I really worry about the next 6 months. I felt VERY lonely during the first lockdown, it was truly an awful time. The thought of winter and not being able to see my family or friends fills me with dread. I worry how I will cope. And zoom will not cut it this time. Fed up with that!
I so wish there was a better testing system in place. We could have got through the winter so much better if testing was better.
People will be losing jobs, winter will be cold and evenings darker so harder to see people outdoors. I am sad and finding it hard to be optimistic.
Each week that goes by I hope for a vaccine. I know they take time but I really had thought we would hear by now.

frozendaisy · 24/09/2020 08:58

Enjoy the autumn, Jan/Feb people don't do much anyway, take it one day/week at a time.

TinySleepThief · 24/09/2020 09:05

I am sad and finding it hard to be optimistic.

I just wanted to highlight this part of your post @yetiyoga and emphasise that it's totally ok to feel sad. I find it very difficult when people say to me in real life try to look on the bright side, focus on the positives or enjoy a quiet Christmas etc.

It's good that some people feel optimistic but it would be even better if they appreciated that being sad is a totally valid mental state.

GardenSanctuary · 24/09/2020 09:08

It's just so bleak now. The weather's turned. I am dealing with a severely depressed and lonely elderly mum, and a year 10 ds. My anxiety is through the roof. I work in pharmaceuticals, and I do believe an effective and safe vaccine will be able within 6 to 12 months, but fuck that seems an eternity right now.

I agree TinySleepThief - what the past 6 month have shown is that a total lockdown can get numbers right down and as soon as the brakes come off even a bit then cases rise. So now we are putting the brakes on again - and numbers will come down, but then we will have to, at some point, take them off again, and guess what will happen. People are saying it will be April, it will be better, but to be honest I just don't believe that.

I'm in Scotland and NS is saying she's going harder so hopefully the restrictions don't have to last as long - but if she stops them earlier, guess what will happen.

And yes, by next Spring we MIGHT have a working vaccine - but even if they focus on vaccinating only the vulnerable and older people so that everyone else can get on with things, that will still take months to do.

So it's going to be on and off with restrictions for at least another 6/8 months I think - which means no ability to plan for ANYTHING as you can't know if the restrictions will be on or off. And having literally nothing to look forward to as I sit in my house for the forseeable future working and not interacting with anyone outside the home, other than possibly meeting 2 other people (as we are a family of 4) in a cafe or restaurant, or for a walk, for month and months on end is beginning to have more than a little impact on my mental health.

CovidPostingName · 24/09/2020 09:19

There is no way out of this without many more people dying and being seriously ill. None. All lockdown does is extend the timeline. Until we have a vaccine, and that will be 6 months at a bare minimum for mass distribution, we are gong to be bouncing in and out of varying degrees of restrictions and lockdown measures. Frankly I'll be very surprised if there aren't still restrictions of some description next winter, 2021.

PennyDreadfuI · 24/09/2020 09:31

I know a friend from the north east who has done a road trip all round the country despite the area being on lockdown

I'm in the NE. There's absolutely nothing in our lockdown rules/guidance which prevents people from leaving the area/going on trips or holidays. And people can visit here, too. The students are arriving and likewise local students are leaving to go to their own universities elsewhere, for example. What your friend did was permissible.

I don't think there's any way that this will all be over by spring. We'll still be smarting from what looks set to be a very hard winter. When the six month limit was mentioned I didn't take it to mean that Covid will be over by then, rather that winter will be over and we'll see where we're at.

Six months ago now (ie the day after lockdown started) I honestly thought we'd be back to pretty much normal within 3 months, tops. I thought that lockdown would be a short sharp shock to bring the virus into line, but even so 3 months of restrictions seemed like such a long time in prospect. And here we are. That'll teach me to be so naive.
