Schools leaving windows open during winter

203 replies

Helenj1977 · 23/09/2020 14:53

I have 2 children at school and my eldest has been told that windows will be open during the winter, they can wear coats. My nephew is in reception and my sil has been told the same.

I get why but seriously how can that be good for them?? I can't imagine them learning much if they're sat shivering.

@NotDonna absolutely. The @Helenj1977 would struggle to find a school not doing this.

UniversallyUnchallenged · 23/09/2020 20:50

@Littered5
You work with positive case, without PPE, sitting with them for 5 hours in poorly ventilated spaces.

You have said you’re not a teacher. I’ve got to ask, what do you do?

Smellbellina · 23/09/2020 20:57

Our classroom is cold in winter anyway, it will be freeeeeezing this winter! Council wanted to know what we will do if it’s -10 (presumably be shut for a snow day? Grin )
I am stocking up on thermals and plenty of layers, i imagine at some point the children will have to come in snow suits and the like (not joking!)
Schools had to complete a risk assessment and be given the ok to reopen by the council, fuck all we can do about I’m afraid.

Abraid2 · 23/09/2020 21:05

The windows don’t have to completely wide open, do they? Just enough to let air in. People seem to be acting as though there’ll be blizzards rolling through.

Piixxiiee · 23/09/2020 21:05

School policy as part of Covid guidance for us. As no masks, no social distancing etc theres literally nothing else schools can do to try to stop the spread....write to your MP suggest covid secure schools as an idea🤣

Littered5 · 23/09/2020 21:06

@Pootle40

10c here tomorrow I would say that's cold
Exactly and it’s only September

If you’re naked yes, if you’re suitably dressed no.
Cookiecrisps · 23/09/2020 21:13

This is what is needed to ventilate classrooms. My school wants as much learning to be outside as possible this term with the exception of rain. Children will have to go out in a coat. This won’t necessarily be lessons where children are moving around a lot as they could be reading or sketching sat on a bench in the winter. I can’t believe people are complaining about this. It is literally one of the only things we can do in the classroom to mitigate risk besides hand washing.

BlueJava · 23/09/2020 21:15

I read this article and thought she sounded horrible - especially the bit about no coats in class. She needs to maximise learning opportunities for them and that won't happen if they are cold.

Applesandpears23 · 23/09/2020 21:15

Don’t worry about it, schools will all be shut before it gets really cold.

Killpopp · 23/09/2020 21:18

Where I come from we leave babies outside to sleep even in the snow! Cold, fresh air is good for you. They will be fine, make sure they are dressed properly

LilyPond2 · 23/09/2020 21:41

If someone in the class has Covid and the open windows reduce viral load, VERY good.

CallmeAngelina · 23/09/2020 21:57

Children will have to go out in a coat.

And yet, STILL, a large number of kids turn up to school without one throughout the Autumn and Spring terms. They know we brave all but the heaviest downpours outside.

Msmcc1212 · 23/09/2020 21:58

I really think being a bit cold is the least of our worries.

Cold weather doesn’t cause illness.

Kitcat122 · 23/09/2020 22:00

Yep my school we've been told to dress warm as windows open all winter. I hate the cold but I've had Covid and that is worse.

Littered5 · 23/09/2020 22:02

Yes it does. Have you never heard of hospitals having winter pressures! It’s every year never mind Covid.

Another option is to homeschool. Covid secure home and all toasty & cosy. Win, win!!

Inastatus · 23/09/2020 22:18

@Littered5

Children should not be wearing a coat indoors because when they go outside they won’t benefit. You wouldn’t sit at home with your heating on in winter and all the windows open would you. It’s getting ridiculous do these measures actually work because I’m not convinced.
‘they won’t benefit‘ - are you my mum 😅 And no, you wouldn’t do that at home because you won’t have 30 people crammed into one room in your house! I think we all remain to be convinced if the measures work but we have to rely on advice from the medical experts.

@ineedaholidaynow that's awesome thanks so much!!!!

Such delicate flowers in the UK. This is how it was dealt with in the US, in cold New England during the Spanish Flu.

I'm not so sure about school being shut. They are the last chance saloons.

This is how they teach in all Japanese schools in the winter! It can get to 5 degrees in the classroom and many of the kids will be wearing shorts...
