Yoga classes??

I happened to go to a yoga class yesterday (haven't been for 8 years).
You wear a mask to go in, and (because it was my first time there) to have a chat with the instructor (hers was under her nose mostly).
Then go in to the studio that wasn't a lot bigger than my living room , there was just enough room for 6 mats, masks off and on we go!
I don't quite understand how all this deep breathing for 1.5hours in a smallish room (no air con) with 5 other strangers is ok and allowedHmm
In any case I won't be going back but do others still go to yoga? Does it seem reasonable?

Im back at classes, but you should be at least 1m apart.

VioletCharlotte · 22/09/2020 21:05

Also, doors/windows should be open to keep the room well ventilated.

FusionChefGeoff · 22/09/2020 22:03

I do Covid risk assessments for a living.

I love yoga and have been practicing for years.

I am not going anywhere near an indoor live yoga lesson for a very very long time. It's a shocking oversight that they have been allowed to open in my opinion.

Fyzz · 22/09/2020 22:16

Hmm this aligns with my feelings. My pilates class re- started in village hall. Limited to 14 people 2m apart. Doors supposed to be open.
First week all good and all windows and doors open.
Second week there were 15 turn up and no-one sent home.
Third week it was draughty and door was closed.
We are rural and very low cases round here, but I'm ecv and was shielding.
I think I need to give it a miss don't I?

Delatron · 22/09/2020 22:20

I’m a Pilates instructor and I’ve been holding off group classes for now. Despite legally being allowed to run them. You should be at least 1.5 but I think 2m apart? And yes windows and doors open but I’m not sure how that is going to work going in to winter.

I guess it’s similar to pubs and restaurants. Businesses that make money therefore people can be inside without masks. But I don’t feel it’s safe. If someone in that class has the virus then you are all inside together for an hour breathing the same air?

I am doing private classes in my studio with 2m distancing and doors and windows open for now.

I wonder what gyms are doing?

dementedpixie · 22/09/2020 22:22

Our sports centre has marked out 12 large squares on the floor in the studio used for classes and everyone is abiding by the rules of staying in your own square. Think each box is at least 2-3 square metres so plenty of space between each person

Delatron · 22/09/2020 22:23

Do gyms now have to stick to the rule of 6 for exercise classes? Trying to work through the new guidelines.

@FusionChefGeoff

What about baby sensory classes?
I’m really surprised they we’re allowed to sing at ours. I’m not sure I feel comfortable going back.

No they don't need to stick to the rule of 6 as its an organised activity with covid mitigations in place
goingtoseethesea · 22/09/2020 22:27

Windows and the door were all closed

I think that's much worse than having a friend over at your house for a cup of coffee which is now not allowed (Scotland)
1 m distance doesn't really do a lot when you're all deep breathing together... the same air

Delatron · 22/09/2020 22:28

Ah ok, thanks. I was just reading about indoor team sports being limited to 6 and wondering if that applied to exercise classes too.

dementedpixie · 22/09/2020 22:33

In Scotland its 2m not 1m. Our marked out boxes are much larger than 1m and we can only fit 12 in a class now rather than double that number (I'm in Scotland too)

AdoreTheBeach · 22/09/2020 22:34

I wouldn’t go there

I am back at my health club doing yoga. They’re no longer offering long glasses - only 45 minutes. Each mat is marked out with a sticker on the floor which are 2 meters apart.

Classes are smaller because of 2 meters apart

Open window and air con on

No sharing equipment. If you use club just, the cleaning crew come in between classes to clean the floor and all equipment.

I wouldn’t be going back to that place and would let them know why

RancidOldHag · 22/09/2020 22:40

England is also 2m unless masks are worn

(at least for classes which are pretty static, so you would be within a shorter distance of someone for over 15 minutes, I dont mean the sort of spots where you are occasionally closer but always moving around)

MonkeyPuddle · 22/09/2020 22:40

I go to a yoga class. We book in advance and there are a max of six in class, the rest do it online at home. Own mats, blocks etc. 2m apart easily from each other, windows and doors open, sanitiser at the door, shoes off at the door. I feel ok about it.

mineofuselessinformation · 22/09/2020 22:41

Air con is a no. Any form of blown air is considered likely to propel particles further.

Delatron · 22/09/2020 22:45

I think doors and windows open has worked up until now but won’t it get draughty and cold soon? Could do yoga/Pilates in big jumpers I guess!

PinkPiranha11 · 22/09/2020 23:34

I’ve been back to hot yoga. I love it and feel so much better. Definitely no open windows as you’d lose the heat! Far fewer in the studio though. Don’t feel “unsafe” at all TBH.

goingtoseethesea · 23/09/2020 07:18

No I won't be going back anyway, as i wasn't that keen and much prefer doing it at home ith youtube, but was very surprised that that's even allowed to go on.
It was not 2m between mats.
At the end of the class everyone sprays dettol around then put masks on to leaveHmm

I go to my yoga studio 3-4 times a week. It's the one thing keeping me sane in all of this.

Mats a minimum of 2 metres apart, marked out on the floor. You have to bring all your own equipment - mats, blocks, straps etc. All mats facing forward, rather than into the room like they used to be, and max 12 in the room rather than 22.

The owner has installed a new air filtration system which makes a lot of noise and disturbs my savasana

Hand sanitiser everywhere and temp check before you enter. Masks on in communal areas and most people keep them on during practice although some don't.

I feel perfectly safe. However if it was like your place I wouldn't - big difference imo.

This is how my yoga studio is working too.

My PT also holds a circuits class but hasn't started up again yet as he's not convinced he can do it safely. He was planning on sticking to rule of 6 though.

Upupupintheair · 23/09/2020 07:46

Not yoga but barre class, limited to 4 clients and cleaned down after each class. Everyone brings their own equipment and windows/ doors kept open for ventilation. Feels very safe!

monkeyonthetable · 23/09/2020 07:49

I returned yesterday to a yoga class that had been cancelled at start of lockdown. The teacher had hired a bigger hall and limited numbers, so we were at least 3m away from each other with windows wide open and she reminded us at all times to breathe out through our noses not our mouths for this session. It felt safe, and so lovely to be back.

FusionChefGeoff · 23/09/2020 09:14

@monkeyonthetable that sounds like someone who understands the transmission risk! That could be considered safe.

@Rollawayyourstone you're right to be worried about singing - massively increases quantities of airborne particles which hang around rather than fall to the ground after 1.5m so I wouldn't be keen on this unless it was outside.

General note about air con - the biggest risk is when airborne particles build up in an area. A minor dose of airborne is unlikely to be enough to give you COVID but a good lungful of a concentrated amount will. Airborne particles are generated through breathing through the mouth, singing and talking loudly. So you want to avoid anything which creates a lot.

Then you need to try and get rid of them / disperse them as quickly as possible.

Hence why outdoors is so low risk - the particles are in such a low concentration so quickly it doesn't matter.

But an airless, unventilated, low ceiling / small room space for a few hours will just build up and up and up. It won't matter if you are 6m away. You could still be breathing in a heavy load.

Air con - provided it is a fresh air system, isolated that brings in outside air through one room and back out again is A Good Thing as it helps to lower concentration of particles.

Air con that recycled air or uses the same air to go through many rooms is the danger zone as it will just spread particles without removing any.

Lazypuppy · 23/09/2020 09:18

You don't have to wear masks during exercise thats why, but you have to wear it in enclosed spaces.

If i had to wear a mask to do exercise i wouldn't go

Yes mats should be 2m apart, my gym its fine, all classes are nicely spaced out.
