Did Boris change his mind about restrictions, are there more on the way?

A huge deal was made about the rising number of cases and I was all set for some really tough restrictions as were a lot of people who went back to panic buying toilet paper. So far it's just a curfew, and some stricter rules around mask wearing in shops, not even a ban on household mixing in England. Were they going to lockdown harder and decided against it? Are more restrictions on the way very soon? So many questions!

Yes I think that if cases don’t stabilise then we will get more restrictions in the next few weeks. Scotland already have a ban on household mixing from today, England will get it soon.

Delatron · 22/09/2020 18:12

I think reports are that he wanted tougher restrictions but Rishi said it would damage the economy.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/09/2020 18:13

Yes I think so. I think he’s torn between health experts and economic advisers. It was going to go one way, and has been watered down. Thankfully.

They can try! I won't be complying.

It's just strange that they wheeled out the CMO and Chief Scientist (still not sure if chief scientist is a real job title or made up for TV) and then did basically nothing much.

Give it a few weeks, and there probably will be more changes to these restrictions plus more. I personally don't think some of them are going to help lower numbers.

SunbathingDragon · 22/09/2020 18:16

It’s also back to wfh where possible which is quite a big adjustment for some companies and another impact on the economy.

SunbathingDragon · 22/09/2020 18:16

I wouldn’t be surprised if tonight or soon we (In England) are told we cannot socialise indoors in line with Scotland.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/09/2020 18:17

I think the 6 thing is relevant, if people obviously flout that then there will be severer restrictions.

planplan · 22/09/2020 18:21

I'd like to see a ban on meeting up with people outside your bubble and a restriction on travelling out of area, even though that means my week in Wales at half term is cancelled.

ancientgran · 22/09/2020 18:23

Boris has a mind! Wow you live and learn.

randomer · 22/09/2020 18:26

Poor old B, torn between all those pesky advisors. And so busy with his personal life too.

Keepdistance · 22/09/2020 18:28

We're at the Cheltenham and football match stage again. With a wash your hands.

janetmendoza · 22/09/2020 18:36

Yup if he doesn't introduce no socialising with other households inside tonight (and I don't thank he will,) then I will stake my house on the fact that it will be introduced nationally within three weeks. The measures he looks likely to introduce tonight are not going to stem numbers.

Juststopswimming · 22/09/2020 18:37

A lot of people on here sounding very disappointed we arent all being sealed in our houses again (yet)....

OneForMeToo · 22/09/2020 18:41

Not disappointed. Just realistic the expected measures won’t dampen much people Are openly saying they won’t follow the new rules is they aren’t a lockdown because why can I do X but not Y.

OneForMeToo · 22/09/2020 18:41

Also wasn’t aware we where ever sealed in our houses. You might want to report that to an official 😀

MishyJDI · 22/09/2020 18:44

I hope not. I hope we can hang in there through social distancing. I'm worried any more lock downs and I won't have a job to come back to. I guess this was going to happen after the Summer break. I'm glad my girls are back at school, but worry what they may bring home and impact my mum. It is better being locked in!

Juststopswimming · 22/09/2020 18:47

There's people on here calling for an even tougher lockdown than before, so I can only imagine they want us to be sealed in our houses 🤷‍♀️

Anyway - re the rules not going far enough - I think you are under estimating how sick people are of this whole thing. I think the government can put all the rules in place they like, and people will still do as they please/see fit for themselves.

Quartz2208 · 22/09/2020 18:49

I think there is no money left and the economy is on the brink and Rishi Sunak has for now had his way. I think we are going for less restrictions for a longer time to try and manage our way through this.

Whitty and Vallance I think yesterday tried to manage expectations that we are going to see death rates rise and are in for an unpleasant winter

Yep.
yolio · 22/09/2020 18:54

There is plenty of (Russian) money floating around believe me, and there will be no bankruptcy or IMF involvement either. UK is a wealthy country for some.

Gearing up for a gradual lockdown for Christmas I think. That is the time when hospitals get overrun with flu, chest inf and the likes. And people are visiting others in overheated houses in close quarters, no matter how much you try to SD.

Be prepared.

Crocciesnap · 22/09/2020 19:02

I think it was hyped up as something worse so we would be relieved and accept it better.

MintyMabel · 22/09/2020 19:03

I guess the rest of us will just have to put up with it for longer.

I assume you’ll be refusing medical care when you catch Covid, yes?

MintyMabel · 22/09/2020 19:04

be relieved and accept it better.

Accept what better? A few more people wearing masks and a vague request to work from home?
