Will this affect gyms

OP posts:
AllsortsofAwkward · 22/09/2020 06:21

Utilmately yes

BlackberrySky · 22/09/2020 06:30

I would imagine so.

micc · 22/09/2020 07:22

I work at a gym/leisure centre. Think David Lloyd/Virgin Active, so it has a restaurant. I am unsure whether they will close. I'm on Mat leave now but when I was working they were hot on all the rules for members. Maybe places like gyms and pubs will stay open with perhaps a few more rules. Because it is safer to be somewhere like a gym where things should be cleaned routinely and distancing measures are in place than sitting in someones living room. I do understand that logic. Saying that I dont know. The gym/leisure industry will take another massive hit if they do close them. It will be interesting to see, I'm also really worried.

Dancingalong · 22/09/2020 08:10

I really hope not. My gym feels extremely safe everyone distancing and cleaning equipment before and after, they close every hour for a 15 minute clean down. I haven’t heard anything suggesting gyms are super spreaders. Surely they would be encouraging us to stay active. It’s such a benefit for physical and mental health for so many people.

HamishDent · 22/09/2020 08:58

I hope not, but I suspect they may well close. I’ve been to our local authority ones a few times and it has been extremely quiet. They are very well managed with social distancing and almost constant cleaning. From what DH says, it’s a similar story in his more fancy private gym.

I guess we just have to change and adapt. I’m off to the gym at lunchtime in case they all close again. It may be my last chance for a while!

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 22/09/2020 09:01

No.

HarrietOh · 22/09/2020 09:05

They better bloody not! Our small local gym has sectioned off small squares and only a small number of people allowed in for each class. You have to sanitise, and then clean all equipment after use, and leave through a different door. Socially distanced the whole time. Live in the NE and only one of our members has tested positive and because of the measures in place it hasn't spread in the gym.
I'll crack up if the gym closes again.

Yetiyoga · 22/09/2020 09:19

I hope not. I only went back yesterday.

Blobby10 · 22/09/2020 09:20

Hope not - my gym is the cleanest its ever been and everyone (at least when I'm there during unstaffed times) is very obedient to the rules about cleaning down weights and equipment. My mental health survived the original lockdown by cycling after work and at weekends but wouldn't be able to do that now its getting dark so much earlier. I would really struggle to cope if they shut down again.

BikeTyson · 22/09/2020 09:21

Hopefully not, as they’re important for a lot of people’s physical and mental health. They haven’t been closed in local lockdown areas.

VikingsandDragons · 22/09/2020 22:49

I think it's likely at some point, and I say this as someone whose entire income depends on the fitness industry. Studies have shown during exercise droplets spread up to 12m and while we've taken every possible measure short of putting everyone in their own plastic box we cannot operate with 12m separation. We are already operating at 15% capacity, we've had to let 9 of our 14 person team go, it's like dying a death by 1000 cuts. Even if we were told to close now for 6 months we could cope, but the uncertainty makes it very difficult and opening and closing repeatedly would ruin us. I think honestly a lot more sectors will need to close this winter, this is going to be lockdown by increments. I will be very, very happy to be proved wrong!

BananaPop2020 · 22/09/2020 22:54

I think they will, and I am going to be seriously pissed off about it.

Heffalooomia · 22/09/2020 22:55

I dont think there have been outbreaks linked to gyms though?

BananaPop2020 · 22/09/2020 22:57

@Heffalooomia since when has common sense featured in all this?

Lurkingforawhile · 22/09/2020 23:06

I don't really understand the bit about indoor sport. Does that mean my yoga and aerobics classes are off again. Or did he say team sports? Very confused.

BananaPop2020 · 22/09/2020 23:07

@Lurkingforawhile my thoughts exactly...but as usual there is a lack of clarity.

TheySeeHerRowling · 22/09/2020 23:08

Christ, I hope not

I can't go back to dh using the kitchen as a weight room or there may be murder

Lurkingforawhile · 22/09/2020 23:11

I've found the answer from Sports England "Going to the gym and fitness classes will still be allowed to continue for over 6 people so long as there is no interaction or mingling between individual groups of 6.". Phew!

Lurkingforawhile · 22/09/2020 23:12

I'm so relieved. It sounds daft but wfh means that going to my fitsteps or yoga is the only time I actually interact with a group of people.

BananaPop2020 · 22/09/2020 23:19

Thank you 😀

BananaPop2020 · 22/09/2020 23:19

I am in exactly the same boat

Heffalooomia · 22/09/2020 23:32

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 23/09/2020 07:33

i heard gyms mentioned as a hot spot, along with care workers, car sharing, house parties and pubs

billybagpuss · 23/09/2020 07:35

@Heffalooomia

There was a ‘superspreader’event early on linked to a salsa class
KatherineJaneway · 23/09/2020 07:36

Only if people don't behave and we go into a mini two week lockdown. Apart from that they will remain open.

Mine is busy now, was quiet when it first reopened. Also have a few kids there now which was very surprising.
