Will this affect gyms

Personally I'd rather have a 'work out to help out' scheme than 'eat out...'. Helping the economy, getting fitter and reducing risk of serious complications from covid in one fell swoop. Far too sensible though!

rwalker · 23/09/2020 07:37

In every environment I'm in the gym is THE SAFEST by far .
pre book limited numbers allocated space, equipment and one way system.

Mychitchatdays · 23/09/2020 07:39

I think my gyms the safest place I go. I'd happily eat a meal off the machines it's so clean. They've also had some kind of machine fitted that changes the air in the gym 14 times an hour. A company comes in every night and fogs it too.

I think at the moment they’re focusing on socialising as when alcohol is a factor people become less careful whereas gyms have done a lot of work to make it covid safe and everyone is being careful, although dd was on greeting duty at DL the other week and most were lovely but she had 3 very rude entitled people refusing to sanitise hands 🙄

this Is a double edged sword, I love the idea, but like a nice quiet gym 😂😂

Studies have shown during exercise droplets spread up to 12m

No they haven't, if you are referring to the study they carried out in Belgium at the beginning of all this which wasn't about covid at all.

PatchworkElmer · 23/09/2020 07:43

I suspect they will at some point. I’d imagine (well, hope) that the government will have some kind of tiered system about which things to close if the infection rate rises.... I suspect that gyms could close or be more restricted in the next ‘wave’, but then who knows with this government! I hope not.

billybagpuss · 23/09/2020 07:50

When our local lido finally reopened they were amazing, by far the most covid secure place I’ve been to. Squares 2m apart for people to change in, one way systems.

Maybe they should introduce covid ratings for businesses like they do for hygiene and the issue of fire certification. Most gyms/pools I’ve seen would easily score 4/5 and are way higher than most shops.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 23/09/2020 08:33

not all gyms require you to book in advance

FredaFox · 23/09/2020 08:35

My friend got covid at her gym/ yoga class so I don’t think they are the cleanest places. The staff were cleaning everything you can’t stop the person in a neighbouring mat breathing out in a class

borntobequiet · 23/09/2020 08:37

My gym is about as COVID secure as it could be (and is very important to me).
My workplace however (FE college), not so much. I’d be really pissed off if I had to go in to work (have been successfully teaching remotely through lockdown, but am not allowed to any more), but couldn’t go to the gym.

Doingitaloneandproud · 23/09/2020 08:43

I doubt it, there's not enough numbers to show gyms are a risk, in fact the transmission numbers linked to gyms is incredibly small.
I've been going to the gym 5 days a week since it opened, no cases of Covid in mine. Or my second gym either.
They have proven the measures in place are working and they're great for mental and physical healthSmile

Piggypower · 23/09/2020 08:47

It’s not about cleanliness-it’s about space and breathing. As long as they’ve got the capacity to spread people out they should be ok

SisyphusDad · 23/09/2020 09:39

I hope not but fear yes.

The inability to go to the gym has probably done more damage to my health than Covid would have done. I spent 18 months prior to Covid putting in a lot of effort to get fit and lose weight and was really proud of what I achieved. Then the gym closed and I'm back almost to square one Sad.

Fortyfifty · 23/09/2020 09:45

If there's no evidence of them contributing to virus transmission, when the gym enforce the guidelines, then no, they should not close. The benefits they give to many people need to be considered. If there's are gyms not strictly abiding by or enforcing the rules though, they should close.

sociallydistained · 23/09/2020 09:52

I literally went back yesterday the only reason I hadn't been back before was fitting it into my new work schedule and I was worried about the showers not being free and I need one before work... but they put my mind at rest about it all when I went in yesterday. I booked in for a class tomorrow. Knowing my luck ill get into my rhythm and they'll be closed again. I worked out from home everyday in lockdown so I'll cope again just don't see why gyms need to close again.
