I agree, I am more bothered by the prospect of long covid than I am about dying.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 21/09/2020 22:20

well it might help if the gangs of parents outside primary schools in wore their fucking masks and stopped hugging.

Diverseopinions · 21/09/2020 22:22

It's very hard, but sadly true what one poster said about teenage youngsters not wearing masks on buses. In a few instances, mask was folded in a pocket or resting on the throat. Time to reinforce the message.

anxiousanna75 · 21/09/2020 22:26

When you shielded your medically vulnerable child for the previous months. You never left the house apart from to go for walks in the fresh air. You then have to send them back to their special school where they are unable to social distance, they constantly have their hands in their mouth, they have respiratory problems linked to their disability, you try to home educate but are told that because they are in special school it is not that simple to deregister, and you have no choice but to send themor face fines or court action ......that's what makes me so fucking angry!! I almost lost him to flu. He spent six weeks on life support in intensive care, yet none of that is important.

ThatDamnScientist · 21/09/2020 22:30

@catsarecute

They need to close the schools for a couple of weeks and put secondaries on blended learning after that. And introduce temperature checks, and remove the threat of fines for parents that want to keep their kids at home. I can't see how they can get anywhere close to controlling transmission in schools without that. It's no coincidence that cases have rocketed after schools have opened.

If they ever get operation moonshot up and running we night have a chance then. In the meantime we need a functioning test and trace system, urgently :-(

Temperature checks at entry are not reliable. We were running late (chose to wait for non-packed bus as apparently SD doesn't apply on our bus services!) so when we got off the bus we actually had to run to make the door before the bell and so we were both hot from that - dd2 would have been sent home had she had her temp checked at that point!
RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 21/09/2020 22:30

It's a virus, it's going nowhere.

We are, sooner or later, going to have to live with it. It will be one of the (mainly) winter viruses.

Vulnerable people are vulnerable to many illnesses and viruses. Some will die this year, for some it will be CV, for more it will be something else - they may die with more than one thing on their certificate but they can only die once.

supersonicginandtonic · 21/09/2020 22:31

@anxiousanna75 see this is where I can understand the worry and the anxiety. You are in such a worrying position. My close friend has a daughter who sounds very similar to your little one and she is being faced with the same. She also has hospital stays due to flus and colds. I really, really feel for you and you should definitely be given the choice to do what you feel is best to protect your little one.

amitoooldforthisshit · 21/09/2020 22:31

I feel face coverings in public can be a very helpful and positive step especially in winter months, I know people are skeptical of the effectiveness of them, but the science is there to back it up look at Belgium and South Korea, and Japan, it can work and bring down infections

Devlesko · 21/09/2020 22:33

It's always been the survival of the fittest, it's unfortunate but more people will die.
Nothing will stop it if there really are this many cases and it's as deadly as stated.
There again we probably all had it beginning of Feb anyway.

Beebityboo · 21/09/2020 22:33

@sunseekin unfortunately I think I'm out of time in that regard. Her head has tried to be understanding but due to her incredibly bad anxiety and her aspergers she just isn't coping. He already let her have a week off, then we had to isolate for a week, so no idea what more I can say or ask him for. She's been in two days since the start of term! Due to her anxiety she can't face being in big classes so they have put her in a room by herself for most of the day. It just isnt working and I don't know what to do. I just feel like pulling her out is our only option. I don't think that schools will close and I don't think they are going to I turn on fines for non attendance.

Well yes I’m sceptical as infections only seem to be going up here, in France and Spain where they’ve been worn for months
LovelyLovelyMe · 21/09/2020 22:36

When threads abound all over the internet with outrage towards any rules to try and stop this pandemic, of course nothing will work..

Dawnlassie · 21/09/2020 22:38

No not really. That was evident when the blonde buffoon didnt sack the Barnard Bungler.

People will not accept different rules for them and us.

Guylan · 21/09/2020 22:39

So that's your ideal world then? Lockdown after lockdown after lockdown forever?? Hmm.

@borntohula, my view is that as by next spring a vaccine or therapeutic may be developed and because of the potential loss of life or long term health problems it is worth trying to keep cases down until at least then. Also give this woeful govt some more time to build a functional test, trace isolate system which is vital. Lockdowns, national or local, only v temporarily get community transmission low if there is no functional test/trace system in place to take over and keep cases low.

If by next spring it starts to look a vaccine cannot be developed then it might be time to accept we have to live side by side with CoVid but whilst there is still a chance to avoid that I think it should be taken.

studychick81 · 21/09/2020 22:40

Just announced pubs etc shutting at 10. Does coronavirus know the time? I don't understand the logic behind that decision.

Guylan · 21/09/2020 22:41

@FOJN, I understand. As someone severely ill with a chronic illness if it can be avoided it’s so worth it. Quality of life is important.

Agree.
PrawnMeringue · 21/09/2020 22:44

@supersonicginandtonic

I actually find the doom and gloom people more depressing than the pandemic. Life goes on, you have to learn to live with what you have got. Try and look on the bright side or we are heading for a mental health pandemic. Your doom and gloom isn't only pulling you down it's pulling everybody around you down and that is quite selfish.
Agreed.

I think a lot could change. I would say that you would like to stay on roll until October half term. It’s not fair to make you decide before then as cases are going up - you don’t want to miss out on the support and contact over lockdown. Obviously it’s up to you, I almost want rid of the hassle but the injustice is keeping me on roll atm!

itsgettingweird · 21/09/2020 22:49
@monkeytennis97 so who looks after the ones remote learning if parents work?
Surely they look after themselves? It's secondary age year 8-10 and he 12. Not young children.

borntohula · 21/09/2020 22:50

@Guylan that's fair enough, I can understand that.

@studychick81 I would also like to know that.

SeekingCoffee33 · 21/09/2020 22:54

With Boris in charge? No. I think there’s no public confidence. I’m sick of leaked information. I’m sick of no leadership. I’m sick of misleading and contradictory information.

From what the doctor has just said on LBC there doesn’t seem to be any long immunity to Covid. I’m sick and tired of it all. I feel so anxious all the time wondering what’s going to happen next. I’d really prefer if they had a proper plan and they actually shared it with the public

catsarecute · 21/09/2020 22:54

@Autumnsthemostwonderfultime research has shown that teenagers transmit the virus in the same way that adults do. Secondary settings are bigger than primaries and therefore riskier in terms of numbers. There's not the same impact on working parents if secondaries go part-time as if primaries do. Those are the reasons why I would beg to differ with you that secondary schools need to offer blended learning (sorry you don't like the phrase, that's what they're using. It is part time schooling yes but not part time learning, they can still learn remotely from home too). As you yourself said, we need to get numbers lower in the community and that's one way of doing it. Hopefully once numbers are under control it could go full time in school again. There's no easy answers, we can't have it all.

I could possibly ask but the head has already let her have quite a lot of time off and has had to put up with my worried emails! I think it would definitely be good to have a bit longer to make a decision.
