Do you actually think we will go into a second lockdown?

As in schools, non essential shops, hospitality etc all closed.

If I'd have heard this speculation last month I wouldn't have entertained it, especially with how reluctant Boris was to lockdown in the first place.

Yet people on here sound so sure it's about to happen again. I'm not arguing against the possibility, I'm just shocked.

The economy cannot survive another period of the type of lockdown we saw in March, surely not.

The organisation that manages out local leisure centres (fusion) appears to have gone bust meaning our gyms/pools never reopened after lockdown, they were a huge organisation and already v successful. I fear this spells curtains for many businesses if it happens Sad

If you start to get increasing numbers, then the economy will stall anyway, regardless of lockdown.

Jods90 · 20/09/2020 22:57

Yes that's true.

I have been living in hope that we would be able to avoid a second lockdown. It's not looking good is it.

Yes - it’s not in human nature to be so isolated. We’re still animals and people will continue to break rules and travel without the consideration of others.

onedayinthefuture · 20/09/2020 22:59

I just can't see the compliance this time, they must know this.

TheMurk · 20/09/2020 23:01

Yes.

They have been telling us this for more than a week.

Newjez · 20/09/2020 23:01

The numbers are not that high yet.

But uni could have been done remotely. That will raise the numbers.

I think it will be a slow shutdown.

Hopefully we won't start to run out of things. Tried to get a delivery from IKEA, but they were out of stock.

Beetlejuicer · 20/09/2020 23:02

I don’t think it will be as harsh as the first.

Pubs may close; maybe restaurants, no mixing houses. Schools stay open

dolliemixture · 20/09/2020 23:02

I feel like they’re building up to something. Maybe trying to hint at a second lockdown coming so people are more accepting if they’re just tightening rules up a bit?

I really hope there is more support and a plan for home learning if they close schools though.

Pickagoddamnname · 20/09/2020 23:03

I’m hoping schools are the last thing to close. So maybe everything but schools? I do think it will happen at some point but not yet. I do think there’s something in the 2 week October circuit break theory

AgentCooper · 20/09/2020 23:04

I hope not. The thought makes me want to fucking cry. I feel like I’m only just getting a bit of sanity and headspace back now that I’m working from home. I was furloughed for 5 months with my toddler and it was tough on my mental health. Not because my toddler isn’t lovely but he’s a toddler and work was always a bit of respite for me.

lubeybooby · 20/09/2020 23:05

I hope so and I hope people get behind it and realise why instead of the relentless covid denier whingefest and the hoardes of ignorant who refuse to understand. Moon on a stick anyone?

HauntedPencil · 20/09/2020 23:05

I don't. Though I can imagine a pretty strict one,I think there will be school work etc.

I just can't imagine the colossal cost of the furlough scheme etc will be repeated for one thing.

Pieceofpurplesky · 20/09/2020 23:06

Thanks pick. Everything but schools. You know teachers can get it too? Doesn't miraculously stop at the school gates ... be interesting to see how many teachers have been diagnosed so far. There are over 400 schools shut or partially shut already

Firebird83 · 20/09/2020 23:06

I don’t think schools will close again.

Teachers won't be the be the only ones working. Shutting down everything else in terms uf socialising will be aiming to keep schools safer, not a suggestion teachers don't get it.
HauntedPencil · 20/09/2020 23:10

Does this need to be yet another thread where people are going to get accused of wanting teachers to die if they don't think schools will shut?

Ecosse · 20/09/2020 23:11

I really hope not- we now have w very good idea of exactly who is at risk from the virus. The fact is that the vast majority of us are not.

We need to throw our resources at protecting those who are vulnerable and pay their wages to stay at home. The rest of us need to keep the economy going to make sure we can afford the NHS services the vulnerable rely on in future.

We also need to put NHS staff on emergency contracts so they can be moved around the country to where local spikes are. It makes no sense locking down due to lack of NHS capacity in Birmingham when you have nurses sitting idle in Plymouth.

We need to use every single bed and every single HCP before we even thing about a lockdown that would destroy the economy.

Littleposh · 20/09/2020 23:12

No

TheMurk · 20/09/2020 23:13

@Pieceofpurplesky where are you getting your food from? Is a drone lifting it straight from the warehouse and dropping it on your doorstep?

Thought not.

Teachers have been at work for a few weeks. Supermarket workers and many many more occupations have worked all the way through and have managed... but let’s get precious about the poor teachers!

WILTY43 · 20/09/2020 23:15

Can't help but feel it's coming 😢

Pickagoddamnname · 20/09/2020 23:19

@Pieceofpurplesky of course I know teachers can get it too. Some of my children’s school are already isolating. But one of my children will not cope emotionally if school stops again so I’m hoping schools are prioritised along. Maybe a week on week off rota for schools to help with social distancing as there was much less incidence in schools before summer with social distancing in classrooms and the playground

Tavannach · 20/09/2020 23:22

Probably, but I think the schools will be the last to close.

Augustbreeze · 20/09/2020 23:26

The government announced weeks ago that schools would be the last thing to close (secondary, then primary) and before that would be a stage of rota-d attendance.

Whether schools have enough non-isolating or shielding staff to achieve that is another matter.

CathyandHeathcliff · 20/09/2020 23:29

It’ll be no mixing of households. Only bubbles allowed.
They’ll keep schools, pubs, restaurants and hospitality open though because of the economy. They may put a curfew on pubs.
The household mixing plays no part in the economy, but it means peoples mental health with be in tatters, but they don’t care about that.
I have no idea when I’ll see my parents again, who live 4 hours drive from us. It’s so depressing and bleak.

Dustballs · 20/09/2020 23:35

I think government wants schools to close. It knows that the spread is coming from schools (in a largish part anyway).

The Tories don't give a shit about state schools and the plebs' schooling going to pot. It's just that they've been accused of not caring so they'll try and make it look as if that's not true. For a while at least, anyway.

The storm coming tomorrow is leading to schools being closed. They might not be closed immediately - but the government never had a plan B for schools not working very well. They'll just smash them with a sledgehammer again and have them shut - all in good time.
