Day out in London- would you do it?

My DH wants to do a fun day out in London this week- get the boat from London Bridge and have a look around Greenwich, and lunch and museum in the afternoon. We have two young DS. The headlines are making me anxious about wanting to use public transport, or be out and about in busy places and more than is necessary. Am I being too ott?

Personally, I would not currently use public transport for a non-essential journey.

celerystix · 20/09/2020 13:15

I live in central London with young DC, catch loads of public transport, no issues..

However, due to Covid, half the city is still shut. Museums? You have to book in advance, keep social distance, masks on constantly. No activities on for young DC. Unless you plan to just walk around parks and grab a takeaway lunch, it's probably not worth your time.

girlicorne · 20/09/2020 13:32

I would. Until we are restricted from living life again I won’t cancel any of our plans. I distance, wear my mask and wash and sanitise my hands. From what I ve read on different forums London tourist attractions are quiet at the minute.

GetRid · 20/09/2020 13:42

Yes, I'd go for it on Tuesday while weather is nice. Could be the last chance you get for months with further restrictions imminent. Can't see that wandering around Greenwich poses a particular risk.

In fact maybe go tomorrow in case announcement is early.

(Speaking from bitter experience of days out in London with preschoolers, take a pushchair or scooters as there's a lot of walking!)

denshort · 20/09/2020 13:48

I would.

We live in central London and we have been to Natural History Museum, Chelsea Physic Garden, Water and Steam Museum, Transport Museum, Kew Gardens, Buckingham Palace, St James Park, train, tube, bus, Uber...

It's deliciously quiet!

GarlicSoup · 20/09/2020 13:50

Not in a million years.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/09/2020 13:51

Yes I would.

Itisasecret · 20/09/2020 13:54

I would. Enjoy it before we are all ‘locked down’ again. This time with fines and a criminal record. Total joke, get out and enjoy it.

molifly14 · 20/09/2020 13:54

I would however keep in mind there is a lot of talk that London will be locked down early next week

brightbluegentian · 20/09/2020 13:55

We are local to London and have taken the opportunity to take the DCs to those museums that are normally far too busy. Yes there are masks, some closed displays and pre booked time slots but the overall experience is better without thousands of other people.

Anniissa · 20/09/2020 14:01

Well you won’t be the only one as central Greenwich was absolutely heaving yesterday with very little sign of much social distancing happening.

AlandAnna · 20/09/2020 14:01

We did it last week. It was blissful. Tower of London quiet - could look at the Crown Jewels as many times as we liked with no queue. People around just not crowds. The tube was also quiet. Would do it again in a heartbeat if the train in wasn’t so expensive.

TinyMetalBirds · 20/09/2020 14:02

I would

BeccaBean · 20/09/2020 14:04

Yes, I would. I live in London. We took our DD to the Natural History Museum a week ago before she started Reception and it was brilliant - small numbers allowed in, good distancing in all areas. Buses are not carrying more passengers than permitted capacity. My friend came recently from out of London with her kids and did lots of trips over 3 days. Just remember to pre-book where necessary.

OpheliasCrayon · 20/09/2020 14:09

I would for sure.

Hotmilkandhoney · 20/09/2020 14:09

@AlandAnna it’s literally all over the news. New measures for London expected imminently

merrymouse · 20/09/2020 14:13

I wouldn't travel to London with young children at the moment because I don't think it would be fun.

It's different if you live there, because its easier to cut the day short if its turning out to be too much of a faff.

EasterIssland · 20/09/2020 14:20

Yes. I find London less risky even on the public transport (as long as they’re not over crowded ) than meeting with my family for food.

EasterIssland · 20/09/2020 14:21

But the lockdown is relaxed. Pubs close at 10. Wfh. Essential transport I think but that would make it quiet

winesolveseverything · 20/09/2020 14:24

Yes, I'd definitely do it. It'll be great. Just wash hands before eating.

We have booked to go in Oct half term for 3 days but that decision may be taken out of our hands. Keeping everything crossed though as we love visiting London.

Pachonga · 20/09/2020 14:24

It’s really not the time for non-essential journeys by public transport. People need it to get to work and everyone else staying off it helps keep it safe. Some form of lockdown is likely to be announced for most areas soon anyway so make plans with that in mind.

tinkerbellla · 20/09/2020 14:26

Yes I would. I was there for work the other day and it's so quiet. It's quite sad actually. I took the tube and there were only a handful of people.

I usually avoid London in my personal time but if my DD hadn't just started school I'd take her in on Tuesday and enjoy the sun.

Abracadabra12345 · 20/09/2020 14:31

We had the most amazing day at Hampton Court Palace a couple of weeks ago and also stayed overnight as hotels are so cheap right now. Just check that where you want to go is open and won’t need pre-booking. London and public transport is really quiet at the moment.

@AlandAnna it's literally all over the news outlets however: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1337818/London-lockdown-Matt-Hancock-Sadiq-Khan-coronavirus-COVID-19-latest-news/amp
