Why not a short VERY strict lockdown now to nip in bid so to speak??

Would it not make sense to act now with a very strict national lockdown for maybe 2 weeks? Instead of waiting until everything is out of control again....

So I live in wales so I don't k ow how things are reported in England that much. But public health wales lists number of patients in hospital with covid, number on ventilators/in icu etc and number of beds spare. In a nice graph with pretty colours and everything. Our local hospital/ health board also produces information on number of cases unless its below a certain number to protect peoples identities. So I know that hospital cases have been rising but not cases admitted to icu so far. I also know from someone who works security for the njtingale hospital that in wales at least they are not on standby as there are plenty of beds available atm. Is this information not freely available in england?

Medstudent12 · 20/09/2020 10:29

@Grobagsforever covid deaths are starting to rise. As are numbers on ventilators (who take a few weeks to die anyway).

Firefliess · 20/09/2020 10:30

@sirfredfredgeorge - I was just suggesting lots of snogging opportunities at the summer Covid camp. But maybe a national lick down would have worked better for the younger children!

NeedingCoffee · 20/09/2020 10:30

@thomas1922

No, because for it to work it would need to be a full lockdown. No ambulances on the road, no workers in hospitals, shops ALL shut.... More would probably die as a result than would be potentially saved
This. And arguably anyone who developed Covid in the period would need to be left to recover or die on their own.

@Medstudent12 - Do you have a source please?

WanderingMilly · 20/09/2020 10:35

Just no. Waste of time and it will ruin the economy, putting already struggling small firms totally out of business. And when we open up again, the virus will still be there and still spread.

Currently there are not masses of hospital admissions, deaths are still low for the number of infections. We could tackle it anyway if people would abide by the guidelines, stop having parties and raves or forget to socially distance.

@PennyDreadfuI

Lockdowns don't eradicate viruses, they're a pause button. Doesn't matter whether you lockdown for two weeks or two months, as soon as you open everything up again it'll spread again. That's how viruses work.

I don't think we'll ever eradicate it - far more likely that it will just become another virus, like flu viruses, which we'll understand more about as time goes on. And we'll develop antiviral drugs to to help those worst affected, and possibly a vaccine. It's here to stay and no lockdown will get rid of it.

Well said
Sugar00 · 20/09/2020 10:40

Or maybe I don’t? This is the internet, so who knows.

Yoffel · 20/09/2020 10:44

I think the only reason to have a lockdown is if the nhs starts to become overwhelmed. Death rates still low at the moment, although I think they generally reflect the picture three weeks behind the infection rate.

Yoffel · 20/09/2020 10:46

I’d welcome a lick down, mind.

Thewordgame · 20/09/2020 10:49

Our covid ward is empty too, so are many of my colleagues and friends who work in other hospitals. We are however seeing an increase in problems related to mental health and illnesses.

Grobagsforever. Unfortunately I can’t share as I get information through work and it has a restricted access requirement on it.
@CherryPavlova And yet you can post it on the Internet.

Come off it.

You can see the ventilator numbers rising slightly each day by looking at the government site and the numbers in hospital.

covidity · 20/09/2020 10:52

Absolutely not.
PhD scientist here.
Those in charge appear to be scientific dunces. Oxford PPEs are poor preparation for mitigating the risks posed by a virus.

Jeremy’s lot would have been even keener to strip us of our liberties and our democracy I suppose.

There must be a better way.

@Sugar00 you may do. But to me, you are a random collection of words on the Internet and could be anyone. Hence why I ask for a reputable source link. Everyone should apply this same level of critical thinking.

If you do work there, thank you for being one of our NHS hero's.

notevenat20 · 20/09/2020 10:55

The problem is the practicalities. Work can't just stop overnight.

PhD scientist is what please? You could be studying astrophysics, which would make you very clever but in a no way an authority on COVID.

@RigaBalsam can you link me up the site and also the evidence that these reasons are not attributable to seasonal flu please?
Medstudent12 · 20/09/2020 10:58

@Grobagsforever well deaths were under 10 for a long time (weeks and weeks) they’re now in the high 20s. Importantly hospital admissions and ventilator use age is rising according to gov stats. It’s rising daily, slowly but it’s rising. It can take weeks from hospital admission to death.

I’m a doctor and there are adverts for locum posts on covid wards, I’ve not seen those since May. But I agree we can’t sacrifice the economy to protect the elderly. But we also cannot be in a situation again where the nhs shuts down to cope with covid. If you’re 50 and need a ventilator, that’s fine, as long as we have beds. I imagine we’ll accept a level of deaths but not if the nhs risks returning to being near overwhelmed.

When people say the nhs was never overwhelmed, that’s because we stopped doing almost everything that wasn’t covid, we can’t do that again.

A proper lockdown would have to include the schools as there's no SD there. Can't believe anyone would be happy about that.

Govt cant even enforce the current rules ! so a bit pointless as the people that are compliant will carry on being and the other dickheads wont

I'm always surprised that Mumsnet has such a high ratio of epidemiologists and economists compared to the public at large. Grin

@Rosehip10

MN ideas on a "very strict lockdown" seems to be middle class people working from home while ocado deliveries/amazon etc continue to come as required.
Sadly, I think this is true.

I think it will just have to run its course now. The time for the very strict lockdown has passed.

It is vital we get an effective track and trace system working.
