@Pixxie7

I think the government is clutching at straws, this will entail people reporting each other and can’t possibly be policed. I think they should create a Covid workforce from across the political boundaries to work out the way forward, before things get out of hand.
Pixxie7 you're not supposed to only obey laws when they are 'policed'.

If it's late and no one is about to see do you drive through red lights?

LastTrainEast · 19/09/2020 23:39

BananaPop2020 oh you too? A law is only a law when someone is looking?

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 19/09/2020 23:40

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Should have done it ages ago. No One is self isolating on arrival.

I want to see fines for not wearing a mask on public transport as well.

Non doable as people can just say they have a medical exemption, they can't provide a doctor's note as that is against the law.
Torvean32 · 19/09/2020 23:41

@AuntieStella

One person who did not self isolate (quarantine) was singlehandedly a major factor in the Bolton outbreak, and the whole area is under some of the strictest restrictions in England. With businesses taking the hit.

I think we do need fines.

I wish this were not the case.

Exactly what happened in Aberdeen too.
BananaPop2020 · 20/09/2020 00:23

@LastTrainEast the point I am trying to make is that law needs to be realistic, practical and able to be enforced to make it effective. This current idea is none of those things.

Rosehip10 · 20/09/2020 00:28

As pp have said. This smacks of wanting people to ignore symptoms, avoid testing and ignore/lie in any track and trace. Magically the numbers of infections then looks to have slumped and bojo is a hero.

Ranunculi · 20/09/2020 00:28

People who are not on “low incomes” also can’t afford to lose the money from self isolating. You might earn £1k per week but you probably have financial commitments equal to that amount, like an expensive mortgage or car or school fees. Just because you’re on a higher income doesn’t mean you can afford to lose two weeks salary.

HeIenaDove · 20/09/2020 00:33

So what about people on low incomes then. I can only conclude from this that they must want civil unrest.

Actually this reminds me of news reports of women who were fined for soliciting back in the 80s. They didnt have the money to pay the fine so would go back out on the streets to earn the fine.
Tories dont want to understand about low pay

AuditAngel · 20/09/2020 00:34

About time. People are not only ignoring quarantine and isolation, they are blatantly posting on Facebook showing that they are doing exactly that.

littlemsattitude · 20/09/2020 00:35

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

Shame we have to fine people to comply to keep others safe when it should naturally be the right thing to do.

People need to report breaches though rather than ignoring them.

If they do then don't mention it on here.
HeIenaDove · 20/09/2020 00:38

@ChardonnaysPetDragon How does that marry up with you objecting to ppl on low incomes getting masks for free on a previous thread?

Porridgeoat · 20/09/2020 00:42

Someone with Covid refusing to self isolate could be responsible for deaths. So 10k seems peanuts

remainin · 20/09/2020 00:49

Not self isolating after a positive diagnosis sounds like manslaughter to me.

VanGoghsDog · 20/09/2020 00:50

@Gladysthesphinx

I would definitely not risk getting tested now. I’m frightened of what they will do next to people who test positive. I mean, £10 k fines now - what’s the next step? It’s terrifying. Presumably that’s the intention: they want to discourage people from getting tests.
You don't get fined for the test result - you get fined if you test positive and fail to isolate yourself.

If you have Covid, why would you not isolate? Why wouldn't you want to know if you had it so you could isolate and reduce the risk of passing it on?

Are you saying that before the fines were announced you would get a test, but still carry on as normal even if it came back positive? If so, you are the reason we need fines!

Lumene · 20/09/2020 00:50

Newspapers say it is if you test positive- or are told to isolate by track and trace.

HeIenaDove · 20/09/2020 00:51

So potentially some poor sod on UC has the choice of
a. being fined £10"000 if they dont self isolate.
b. being sanctioned if they do self isolate so cant go to any appointments.

Hmm Im saving this thread. It wont be long..................

But - you could be ill with anything any time. Break your leg, get food poisoning, get cancer, a chest infection, impetigo, piles.......do people really have zero contingency in case they can't work?
HeIenaDove · 20/09/2020 00:52

@remainin Fair comment Of course you feel the same way about Covid patients/care home residents being discharged back into the care home.

No, UC/JSA face to face assessments have been suspended.
FatGirlShrinking · 20/09/2020 00:54

We could do like other countries are and use quarantine centres.

I'm fine with penalties being enforced, sick of people on Facebook, Twitter and here saying that they should be but aren't quarantining.

I do think payments for those not eligible for company pay and under a reasonable income threshold need to be in place, but people need to take the rules seriously or we will be stuck in this situation with cases rising long term.

But that article doesn't say anything about sanctions?
I don't understand your point.

As far as I have seen, and I was on JSA myself for seven weeks, face to face assessments for benefits have been suspended. And on JSA you are not even expected to go to interviews. I never even had an assessor call me!

HeIenaDove · 20/09/2020 01:08

UC IS NOT just an out of work benefit. If people have ALREADY lost money they wont be able to afford to self isolate.............perhaps this is part of the reason cases have gone up in that region.

Radwitch · 20/09/2020 01:11

www.nytimes.com/2020/08/29/health/coronavirus-testing.html

If you’re going to introduce such heavy handed fines, you need to have a test which is very accurate. The PCR test gives a very high percentage of false positives! This is really a crapshoot at this point.

So without the prospect of a fine you would test and then do what exactly if you tested positive?
