Will you vaccinate against Covid?

Let me start by saying I’ve never been an anti vaxxer and have vaccinated my family in the usual way. Also vaccinated them against chicken pox. They get vaccinated against the flu at school but I’ve never been vaccinated myself with the exception of the pregnancy years when it’s recommended.

But I am undecided vaccinating against Covid. Firstly due to unknown side effects of a vaccination that’s being rushed through. Secondly, only 370 people under 60 without medical conditions have died from Covid. No children. (Source Daily Telegraph). Most people who catch it don’t die and at worst have minor symptoms.

If I do decide to vaccinate it will purely be for the greater good of the elderly and those who are immunocompromised rather than because I think/am concerned I’m going to get it myself.
Curious as to what other people’s thoughts on it are?

Yes

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 19/09/2020 10:51

Not if it is an unlicenced vaccine or temporarily-licenced and the manufacturer is not going to be held financially responsible for any problems it causes in those vaccinated. Also, not if it is going to be administered by anyone other than a Doctor, Nurse, Vet or similarly-qualified person.

DelilahfromDevon · 19/09/2020 12:18

I’m curious as to whether those of you that said you’ll vaccinate are in a high risk group or live with someone who is?

In my house we are all young (Ish) and healthy so I really don’t feel the need to do it for our own benefit as I am not scared of any of us getting Covid and not recovering unscathed. So selfishly I wouldn’t. But thinking of the wider community, that's the only reason I’m really considering it at all.

Thanks by the way to those that shared that podcast. Will listen to it later.

Nope.

dudsville · 19/09/2020 12:21

I will. I take any precautions going. I'm healthy and robust though and have never met with any side effects.

HeronLanyon · 19/09/2020 12:23

Absolutely yes !!!

CovidThrowaway · 19/09/2020 12:23

Not until we've seen if there are any unexpected or long-term side effects.

CrumbsThatsQuick · 19/09/2020 12:24

Yes

AgeLikeWine · 19/09/2020 12:26

Yes, definitely.

As an asthmatic, I can’t risk catching covid. This has seriously limited my life for the last six months. I will be at the front of the queue for a vaccine as soon as one is available.

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2020 12:26

Hell yes

And I'd join the trial if offered
My dcs are taking part in a covid research trial (not the vaccine trial)

Sunshinegirl82 · 19/09/2020 12:27

We are low risk as a household but both sets of parents are in their 70s. I'd like to be able to see them freely without worrying we might expose them without realising.

In any event, the only way we will be able to drop all the restrictions and go back to normal will be if enough people are vaccinated to create herd immunity. Everyone who doesn't get vaccinated reduces the chance of us getting there.

BillywilliamV · 19/09/2020 12:27

It’s not really being rushed through, the testing will be done a little faster, the redtape will be minimised and the bureaucracy will be done as fast as possible is all!
They won’t risk hundreds of adverse reactions to a vaccine, why would they?

CrunchyCarrot · 19/09/2020 12:27

No.

AgeLikeWine · 19/09/2020 12:28

Also, I get the flu vaccine every year with no ill-effects whatsoever so I’m confident in the safety of properly tested vaccines.

Thneedville · 19/09/2020 12:31

Yes

I will read and check on the side effects and research first. But even with some risk yes I will.

For the ‘vulnerable’ , which includes my 45 year old diabetic friend and my 73 year old mum, for the elderly, for the families of the elderly who want to be able to hug them without fear. For the economy, our jobs, our day to day lives.

The fact that I personally am very low risk in terms of health impact of the virus is irrelevant.

Topseyt · 19/09/2020 12:32

Given the chance, 100% yes.

I am a type 2 diabetic, so I am in a somewhat vulnerable category.

Fudgefeet · 19/09/2020 12:34

No, definitely not! Just to add I’m not anti-vax but this seems too desperate and rushed.

BlueBlancmange · 19/09/2020 12:35

Yes

MoaningMinniee · 19/09/2020 12:38

Yes. I want to be able to hold my adult daughters who both work with children and young people, and to spend time with my vulnerable mother, and the dds are already deeply upset that they have just lost their other grandmother without getting any chance to see her for her final six months. The idea of Long Covid is worrying me too.

iVampire · 19/09/2020 12:39

Maybe

I have leukaemia, and it’s not clear yet whether it will be safe for me to have it

I can only have killed strain vaccines, and if the ‘carrier’ virus is live attenuated then it’s possible I mustn’t. Right now, there is no clear advice on this - blood cancer charities are saying it’s possible it will be OK but right now no-one can say with enough certainty

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/09/2020 12:40

Definitely. The vaccines aren’t really being rushed - it’s just that the usual delays aren’t in the way.

We know two major trials will report in the autumn, and manufacturing is already under way “at risk”, so if all goes well it’s conceivable that vaccination could begin at the end of the year.

AmelieTaylor · 19/09/2020 12:41

If it was the Oxford one & licensed - definitely

I'd like to understand what it being unlicensed really means for me.

I'd want more informations/opinions if it's not one developed here.

Egghead68 · 19/09/2020 12:42

Yes

yahyahs22 · 19/09/2020 12:43

Good point @SqidgeBum at least you know what you're getting with covid!

No. I definitely will not take it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/09/2020 12:47

It depends. If I had to pay for it then no. I'm not high risk nor is anyone I live with. I don't have the flu jab. I'm not anti vax but I just don't want to pay.
