Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

@oldbagface I am disabled and poor waves yes I am thrilled that I have just started reaching the “no more space” level of food buying. I had a Brexit cupboard prepped last year, which was great as the less shopping over winter the better I say. Few bits from the shops down the road fruit/veg/bread I can do. Rain, bus, supermarket -no.
This time I have lots of cereal, long life milk, loo roll (always bulk buy) and cleaning products.
Last lockdown I caught the bloody virus and wasn’t well enough to go outside for 3 months. I had untouched tinned tomatoes, pasta, as all I could eat was cereal. And when I did manage to get delivery I was paying so much more for basic items like washing up liquid. So yeah, blame me for stockpiling if you couldn’t get shreddies or fairy 2-3 weeks ago, I bought both two weeks on the run thereby ruining the supermarket just in time model.

LetsBeSensible · 18/09/2020 23:44

@Oldbagface thanks I forgot to top up hand soap Grin

GabsAlot · 18/09/2020 23:45

sorry to hear youre disabled i dont blame u for having a few ext5ra bits

i hope people dont panic buy again there was no logic they had stuff it never stopped and supermarkets never close

EarthlyTent · 18/09/2020 23:45

I'm not stockpiling! I'm just accumulating a reserve of goods for use during a future shortage!

GabsAlot · 18/09/2020 23:48

also if idiots so start panic buying again i hope the supermarkets put in a limit sooner than they did last time

PinkPosyPetals · 18/09/2020 23:49

Last time I did, as soon as I heard about China, early in the year.
This time I’m not bothering

This will go on for years

I think it's sensible to have some extras in. You never know when you might need to isolate for 2 weeks at the moment, for a start. We've kept about an extra 2 weeks worth of food in since this started (I already had a small Brexit stash so kept that going, haven't panic bought), and we're keeping that going over winter. Not panic buying, as that's not helpful, but prepping a little extra when stock levels are ok is good I think. I've tried to start getting a few Xmas presents in too.

Heffalooomia · 19/09/2020 00:07

It's always good to have a well stocked and organised kitchen!

Thelnebriati · 19/09/2020 00:09

We buy in bulk from a cash and carry type supermarket that caters to the public. If you can afford to buy in bulk look for those places and online, and you wont affect the stock in the main supermarket chains at all.

FFS! This is exactly how all the panic started. We are all prepped OP simply because of the knowledge that the sky won’t fall on us.

Sophoa · 19/09/2020 00:25

No because even during the peak of Covid I could buy 99% of what I needed

megletthesecond · 19/09/2020 00:34

Yes.
Tbh I was sorted out pre January Brexit but I rotated and added a few more bits.

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 00:37

Hmmm let's see... lone parent of 3dc who eat like they are hollow, ECV and was shielded, don't drive, couldn't get delivery slots for the first few weeks of lockdown. Damn right I've made sure my brexit stash that I started about 18 months ago is topped up. It served me well in those first weeks of no deliveries and being shielded. I've been prompted by talk of lockdown to purchase my next 16kg bag of bread flour though. I might have left it a week or two but I thought it best to get it ordered now. I won't need another one until Christmas I don't think. I've topped up the medication and toiletries this week but just what I'd get normally really.

I'll always be grateful to the preppers because they taught me a sensible way of ensuring I had what my family needs. My stash has seen us through several illnesses, snow and gales, lack of m

I’ve just done an Ocado thanks to this thread, for delivery next weekend. The weekend before lockdown started last time I went to the shops with dozy DH who definitely caught it then. He’s incapable of social distancing, said hello to the lift operator, spent ages faffing about. Grow up dd is moving home, I’ve got in meat (we’re vegan) and tonic water, she can buy her own gin.
Ref christmas presents I’m getting everything off eBay this year. If I start now everything I want will come up.
Sigh. I’m so weary of it all.

Oldbagface · 19/09/2020 00:40

Exactly this @Bercows. Doubt most will miss the few packs of lentils and tins of butter beans.

We eat very cheaply but now I'm a selfish twatHmm go figure.

I suppose that's what you get with MN

Made sure have supplies of toilet roll and hand soap , not loads but we would often not buy until day of last roll , now i try to have 6 in at all times just incase , and a spare handsoap so one in bathroom and one in toilet and one in cupboard as food wise we can always get something
Uht milk still in cupboard as not used last time

SistemaAddict · 19/09/2020 00:42

Posted too soon. Lack of money, self isolation x2, and helped massively when my income was diverted to school uniform over the summer. I love the German way as described by BigChocFrenzy and I have my mum and friends who follow this advice too. It's very sensible especially over the winter months. We have become far too used to just popping to the shop whenever we want or need something instead of using what we have in already. Lockdown got rid of that mentality in me and I love the new way of shopping that I have. It's made our diets healthier and we have discovered lots of new recipes.

JennyMcLenny · 19/09/2020 00:52

It's funny how the word stockpile is being thrown around like a dirty word on MN but when the council start to stockpile salt/grit for the winter roads it's expected and considered normal behaviour for them to be prepared (heaven forbid they haven't stockpiled enough and there is a beast from the east scenario, MN would combust)

But a regular person slowly builds a fully stocked pantry and freezer to feed their family as we head into winter in the midst of a global pandemic with likely lockdowns and a looming no-deal Brexit and sure enough the pitchforks come out.

If those who can do then those who can't won't have to.

TinkersTailor · 19/09/2020 01:32

The sheer amount of inconsiderate bastards that 'just bought a few extras' were the reason why people were left without pasta, toilet roll, baby milk, nappies, tins, hand soap/sanitiser, cleaning products.. during the last lockdown.

A thread like this, almost encouraging people to do so, is incredibly irresponsible.

Bupkis · 19/09/2020 01:36

Very glad we have a store cupboard which we keep topped up with extra bits. Had to start self isolation last Sun, and it has been very handy.

Luzina · 19/09/2020 01:38

I have carried on buying small amount of extra shopping just as I did prior to lockdown because work being insecure. I want to make sure we can manage for a while on less money if we need to.

AlwaysLatte · 19/09/2020 02:19

I have always liked extra supplies of often-used things in reserve anyway, long before COVID, so I've mostly had at least a month's supplies of food and cleaning products, but I'm even more aware of not leaving any gaps in the larder since last time. I look after my Dad with severe lung, heart and kidney problems. The virus would kill him and I don't want another situation where one day in the last lockdown I had to visit 4 shops looking for milk, thereby quadrupling my risk of catching something.
