Have you been buying a few extras with each shop in anticipation?

I notice many items are already out of stock online.

What sort of things have you been putting away.

We have bought the odd extras with each shop e.g. tinned tomatoes, pasta, loo roll and baking powder.

We have loads of flour anyway as buy in bulk for our bread maker.

Oh, and chocolates for Christmas.

It's a sensible precaution, @Oldbagface
So long as it's things you like and that keep, so you can use up the oldest and rotate your stores

I have a few weeks supplies anyway, in case of illness, accident, flood etc
But I built it up more before the March lockdown and keep replenishing

In Germany the civil defence authority recommended keeping a couple weeks supplies, for years before Covid

LizzieSiddal · 18/09/2020 22:44

PremierInn

No, I thought it best to have no food in beyond what I need that day so I can feel smug about not stockpiling

Oh
Wait
That would be idiotic

That made me laugh and is very true.

Southernsoftie76 · 18/09/2020 22:44

@Oldbagface 💐 I totally understand why you would stock up, if others can’t they are idiots. A lot of posters will not understand about being bed bound, if they did they would have more empathy. This has brought out people’s true colours, the old and vulnerable are seen as expendable,

Rudolphian · 18/09/2020 22:45

Nope.
I haven't bought anything extra.
These threads are making me worried we might end up with bare shelves again.

ohthegoats · 18/09/2020 22:48

I stocked for Brexit for the last two Brexit dates, and have done/will continue doing for the end of transition. We get everything delivered now too.

WanderingMilly · 18/09/2020 22:49

Yes, I've kept stocks high and slowly built up my cupboards again, I'm on my own and if something happens I need to feel I can survive a couple of weeks with what I have. To be honest, I used to do that long before the pandemic and shall still do it when it's over......

QueenBlueberries · 18/09/2020 22:52

Yes. I was stockpiling for Brexit and my 'Brexit Stash' became an essential during lockdown. We got used to having that extra box of cereals or tub of Nutella at the back of the cupboard. I just replace the items that we have used in my weekly shop, probably comes to an extra £6-8 a week, probably less.

I think that people who panic buy at the last minute, piling 100 loo rolls and 30 tins of baked beans in their trollies are causing a lot more damage than I am.

AmelieTaylor · 18/09/2020 22:54

@Oldbagface

Yes, I've made sure I have a good stock of stuff in. I've rotated it, but kept an extra good stock since Feb. (Always have had extra in though, it's how I was brought up).

It makes sense to really limit the need to shop if cases get high again

Pay no attention to the opinions of people who do not know the difference between 'having a good stock' & stockpiling. Or between prepping & panic buying.

@froggygoneacourting. That was written about a LOT, but people prefer to accuse others of stockpiling or panic buying than to actually read anything & understand what the actual issue was 🙇🏻‍♀️

BumbleFlump · 18/09/2020 22:55

Nope 👎 haven’t we learnt from last time people 🤷🏻‍♀️

KeepOnMovingForwards · 18/09/2020 22:55

I've got extra bog roll (accidentally clicked a pack of 18 instead of 6 in the last monthly online shop and decided to just keep the extra 12 as spare while still buying my normal amount in the weekly), but otherwise no.

KeepOnMovingForwards · 18/09/2020 22:57

If all else fails, I'll use the milkman for basics and live on omelette/scrambled eggs/egg on toast for a week.

Oldbagface · 18/09/2020 22:58

Thank you for getting it @Southernsoftie76 and @BigChocFrenzy.

I suppose our situation is different to the majority and maybe most posters haven't read the whole thread or maybe we are expendable. Either way, we are being very sensible and not selfish. We certainly can't afford to panic buy. Just sensible stocks of staples.

UnaCorda · 18/09/2020 22:59

I'm buying bigger, so instead of my usual packet of rice I've bought a 5kg bag...

Iv got 3 tins of plum tomatoes cos I picked them up by mistake and my mum (83) has 6 packets of batchelors pasta in sauce cos it was on offer in morrisons for 50p...

Please somebody, kill me now.

oakleaffy · 18/09/2020 23:03

Please for the love of sanity, don't stockpile!
I went months without plain flour..
Panic buying stripped the shelves bare. I haven't a freezer, just a fridge, so couldn't panic buy.
But people were being so greedy.. Supermarket trolleys piled high.
A Waitrose delivery driver couldn't get any bog roll. It was all stripped by the time he could go shopping.

NekoShiro · 18/09/2020 23:03

Of course, have been trying to get extras each shop ever since since lockdown started, want to end up with a system where I have a larder of food so I'm not constantly waiting for the Tesco to arrive so I can have something I fancy.

Everyone should have 2 weeks of food (at least) in their house incase they need to quarantine regardless of how sick and tired they are of coronavirus.

Toothsil · 18/09/2020 23:03

No, because there should be no need. We were still able to shop as normal last time - although the vultures ruined it for everyone. We don't have the space to store extra stuff anyway. I may buy some extra aspirin because I couldn't get it at all for weeks and I need it quite regularly for a condition I have. Other than that and maybe one extra pack of toilet rolls to keep in case of emergency (ie if we were unable to get any because of the panic buying vultures) I won't be buying anything extra at all.

PinkMacaron · 18/09/2020 23:03

I bought a 16 pack of Space Raiders but I've already eaten 6 packs trying to work out whether they were better in the 1980s.

Dominicgoings · 18/09/2020 23:04

Don’t. Don’t buy into the hype and the hysteria that these threads create.

Just don’t.

DeathMetalMum · 18/09/2020 23:04

Yes, and will continue to buy one or two extra bits (tins or freezer items) each week. I work in pharmacy and have two dc in primary school. I am expecting at somepoint we may have to isolate for two weeks. I know online shopping deliveries were hard to come by during lockdown. So I am trying to prepare for the possibility of isolating a little bit, just in case.

JayDot500 · 18/09/2020 23:05

We're definitely more worried about Brexit than Covid.

Twillow · 18/09/2020 23:05

All the above is the reason you should PREP reasonably - (not randomly stockpile whatever you can grab) - but have some backstop so that you don't NEED to panic!

Newjez · 18/09/2020 23:05

We have a big pantry and an extra American fridge freezer in the garage, so we normally keep a lot of stock. We found during first wave rice was really hard to get.
We make sure we keep as much as we can, but you can't stock pile perishables.
But we are more worried about brexit than covid.

oakleaffy · 18/09/2020 23:06

@Rudolphian

Nope. I haven't bought anything extra. These threads are making me worried we might end up with bare shelves again.
Exactly. Doesn't take long for the ''Locust mentality'' to strip the shelves bare.
EssentialHummus · 18/09/2020 23:06

I think it's sensible OP. I slowly built up a Brexit stash during 2019 (comprising 3 large supermarket bags of non-perishables, plus some UHT milk). I used some during lockdown and rotated items out ahead of expiry. I continued building it up. Since August I have been mindful to replace food items as I use them.

I have also found myself running a food bank during lockdown, and if you think it's a rum job trying to sort out your own food stores you should try doing it for 500 people each week!

MrsFezziwig · 18/09/2020 23:06

I’ve been prepping since before the supposed Brexits 1 and 2 . As I live alone I like to feel fairly self-sufficient, and if something I use is on offer I tend to buy an extra one or two for reasons of economy. Have zero intention of taking any notice of the idiots who tell me that I must go shopping once a week without fail and only buy exactly what I need for that week - and as PremierInn put it so well, how is it that the weekly shoppers aren’t being berated for “stockpiling” when they could just buy what they need every day?
