‘I strongly refute the system is failing’

Dido Harding has denied that track and trace is failing and that no one saw the rise in test coming. Pretty sure any parent, medic or teacher could tell you there would be a rise, not only when schools returned, but also due to the change in season in general.

Words fail me. How could she not see it coming?? Schools and Unis going back, more mixing of children then going back to families. That couldn't possibly go wrong, could it. Hmm They should have seen this coming months ago and been planning and scaling up in preparation. I sometimes wonder what the govt is doing, despite them saying they are working every hour of the day.

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2020 17:24

That was a serious failure of sensible thinking.

herecomesthsun · 17/09/2020 17:25

Hardly a success innit?

Been trying all day to get a test for DC who has a cough. DC was only in school 3 days.

We are ECV and were shielding.

[Sound of head hitting wall.]

FlibbertyGiblets · 17/09/2020 17:25

I feel bad dissing a woman, but she's done spectacularly well out of failing often in her working life, non?

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2020 17:27

I feel bad dissing a woman

Why is her sex relevant? She has a strong track record of being mostly useless and it’s happened again. Ovaries make no difference to that.

LizzieSiddal · 17/09/2020 17:28

Well, she one of Johnson's pals, so what do we expect from that arrogant, useless crowd?

FlibbertyGiblets · 17/09/2020 17:30

I try to uplift women that's all. But never mind.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 17/09/2020 17:30

Am I understanding that she was stating the capacity was based on Sage’s modelling, when asked why weren’t they fully prepared for the rapid rise in cases?

So are Sage getting the blame?

Pinkmakeupbag · 17/09/2020 17:31

I watched it. She's awful.

How could they not have seen it coming? I saw it coming so how could they not?

The government also spent months terrifying everyone so people felt compelled to get tested for every illness just incase.

NoSquirrels · 17/09/2020 17:31

Schools go back and they're shocked that the biggest rise is in children getting tested? Particularly children aged 5-9?

Just now thinking perhaps they should put teachers and those working in education up to the top of the priority list?

I don't know how they can sit there and say it's unexpected.

Timekeepspassing · 17/09/2020 17:53

It is a complete joke. It just continues her track record and now she is going to be head of the body replacing PHE. I’ve not needed a test and live in a currently low prevalence area but I’m pretty sure that will change. I’m due to return to work next month and fully expecting to need to test regularly when my son starts nursery, due to the nature of it. I’m dreading when that game starts and I’m an NHS worker so likely to get priority (not that I actually think it will make it easy having heard from others at work struggling now.) I feel so sorry for all of you struggling to get tests when needed right now.

She's on the news now and even my tween / teen dc are infuriated by the nepotism and incompetence this government have brazenly indulged in.

Keepdistance · 17/09/2020 19:57

To be fair though the failing is in proper measures for schools so see and one rules.
With just wash your hands it is not surprising airborne viruses are having a party.

Primary seem to have gone back before secondary. Younger kids more prone to temps and possibly cough.

Keepdistance · 17/09/2020 19:58

If they had even allowed distance learning for those who wanted this would have been reduced.
They can't come back from this as they will have a week with no tests

knittingaddict · 17/09/2020 20:05

Does she have children of her own? I only ask because everyone who has been a parent knows that back to school means back to colds and snotty noses.

knittingaddict · 17/09/2020 20:07

Just checked. She has two children. How can this have escaped her?

Timekeepspassing · 17/09/2020 20:15

I know. I’ve been a parent for under a year and I knew- even before I had a child and friends with children. The rise we will see in the coming weeks as universities go back is also predictable- fresher’s flu is predictable and so would a rise in Covid. Love the username btw.

You don’t have to be a parent to know this. People without children aren’t completely clueless.
knittingaddict · 18/09/2020 05:54

Nobody said you did, but it was definitely an unavoidable fact after having children. As a supposedly intelligent human being she should know this. As a parent, there is no excuse.

notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 06:01

The number of tests processed every day is now over 200,000 . It’s true that lots of people can’t get tests as well. But it’s not clear how easy it would have been to make 200,000 into 500,000 or more.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 18/09/2020 07:09

Very true. Boris has lost count of how many kids he has, and he's still clueless.

Classic example of:

GetOffYourHighHorse · 18/09/2020 07:18

I've defended the government but even I can't quite believe how they didn't foresee this surge. That said, we are still testing more per million than many other countries.

There is such confusion with some people. I saw someone online say one of their colleagues had tested positive and someone replied 'have yer booked a test??'. No 'have you been in close contact', 'have you got symptoms?' Just the idea your know someone who is positive, no matter how vaguely so therefore you need a test

Someone on Twitter said its the new bog roll, idiots booking tests in panic not need.

It's a good thing they are prioritising key workers and care homes but they really should have foreseen the panic element and had the lighthouse labs ready for schools returning.

Phoenix21 · 18/09/2020 07:21

So Rees Mogg thinks people are harping on, Hancock and Harding think it’s working, J’son thinks it’s world beating.

Seeing as they think it’s all fine and dandy is ANYONE actually working on improving the service or are they all having a jolly time fiddling with their backs to the fire?

notevenat20 · 18/09/2020 07:33

The deliberate misuse of the word refute is intensely annoying.
