'Snitch on your neighbours '

Namechanger20183110 · 14/09/2020 09:50

Lots of sound bites in today's MSM from the policing minister suggesting pretty clearly that if you see your neighbours in groups of more than 6, ring the police.

The government are not even trying to hide their blatant tactics anymore to create divisions and animosity so that we stop focusing on the fact that they are a complete fuck up. There is already so much negativity out there. When I venture out, I'm more intimidated by somebody saying something to me about me unknowingly breaching a rule than I am of covid itself!

Will you snitch on your neighbour? I certainly won't be.

No, I wouldn’t.

Heffalooomia · 14/09/2020 13:27

it is so complex
I agree, I don't like the idea of snitching on neighbours either but can anyone see the best way forward?
Anyone?

annabel85 · 14/09/2020 13:27

Don't break the law and it's not a problem is it?

Limeavocado · 14/09/2020 13:30

Interesting point raised above. Let's say hypothetically that I did have a small family over which took us to 7 people (we're a family of 4) and my too-much-time-on-their-hands neighbours reported us, would the police be able to enter or would they need a search warrant? And would they be able to secure that automatically as a result of the somewhat undemocratic creation of new laws? Genuine question about how it will work in practice for police/citizens.

annabel85 · 14/09/2020 13:33

but can anyone see the best way forward?
Anyone?

Everyone to use 'Great British Common Sense' and be sensible. Why is that so difficult for functioning adults?

PhilCornwall1 · 14/09/2020 13:38

@Thewiseoneincognito

I will absolutely be doing this. The alternative is a hard lockdown in the autumn if people can’t follow the rules. To be honest I think this is a prelude to another lockdown but let’s see...
So have the balls to tell them it's you reporting.
OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 14/09/2020 13:39

@annabel85

Don't break the law and it's not a problem is it?
That generously assumes nobody reports behaviour that isn't illegal, based on either confusion or malice.

There's a lot of uncertainty around but one thing covid19 has proved without doubt is 'commonsense' is a myth.
Heffalooomia · 14/09/2020 13:42

The situation is unprecedented, that's why we don't have pre-existing common sense to know how to deal with it

BigSpringy · 14/09/2020 13:43

@Limeavocado - presumably it's like any other crime being committed inside a home? i.e. if the crime is currently being committed- or about to be - then no warrant is necessary for the police to gain entry.

Warrants are only needed in specific circumstances, such as if searching for evidence after a crime that you have not (yet) been arrested for.

janeyloves · 14/09/2020 13:44

@babylamazen
Happy for others to do as they see fit. I don't agree with these rules and I don't agree with schools closing. The country has gone mad for a virus that will kill a v small percentage.

RepeatSwan · 14/09/2020 13:45

No one has to do that. It's just not how the system works.

At the end of the day, the democratically elected government have made a law, unopposed by the opposition, with 74% public support.

Some people will report illegal activity to the police.

Whether the law is right or appropriate is a worthy debate. Whether it should have been made without debate in the HoC is also a serious question. But I imagine it would have passed anyway.

Kaktus · 14/09/2020 13:45

Of course I bloody won’t. Just like I haven’t reported my neighbours teenage son for smoking weed in the garden every time his parents go away for the weekend Grin

PhilCornwall1 · 14/09/2020 13:48

No one has to do that. It's just not how the system works.

I do know that.

It's just gutless hiding behind anonymity reporting this type of thing.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 14/09/2020 13:51

I didn't report our neighbours during lockdown in April for their teens having parties. Just don't want to get involved, but I know our local fb group will be full of the usual moaners saying they saw x number of people together at the park etc etc. Same names crop up regularly Hmm

The law in this case is not common sense though. It's based around an arbitrary number that fails to take into account individual circumstances.

This place will be full of threads about reporting from now on as well.

They are always fun to read and it doesn't take long for the "REPORT!! REPORT!!" post to show either.

annabel85 · 14/09/2020 14:01

Is this a bit over the top?

annabel85 · 14/09/2020 14:02

As above:

Man iviewed on Radio4: “if I found out my neighbour were a terrorist, I would report them because they’re potentially a killer. Covid in my opinion is a killer...therefore anyone who flouts the rules is basically the same as a terrorist walking down the road with a machine gun.”

Completely batshit.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 14/09/2020 14:04

At the end of the day, the democratically elected government have made a law, unopposed by the opposition

And via the use of piss-poor governance. Not just the lack of parliamentary scrutiny, although obviously that's a really significant flaw, but published mere minutes before they came into effect. We should be talking about this.

Completely agree.

Limeavocado · 14/09/2020 14:10

Thanks @BigSpringy for the clarification.

Looks like us and the kids have a lonely few months ahead then as each of the households we're friendly with would push us just above the 'rule of six' and I fully expect our neighbours to rub their hands with glee if they saw we'd pushed up to 7. It's a sad and depressing state of affairs as it does appear to be a very arbitrary number in favour of those without children under 18. As if families haven't had a bad enough time of it in the last 6 months anyway...

Absolutely over the top and batshit. The Stasi are alive and well hiding in plain sight amongst us.

dementedma · 14/09/2020 14:15

You are no longer allowed to gather at home
You must report your neighbours who do so
You must download a state app to track your whereabouts
We are considering a curfew
Police action will be taken if you do not comply
.
.
any of this bothering anyone? Is it me?
