Looks like shielding might be returning

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8727553/Up-4-5million-risk-Covid-told-stay-home-new-shielding-plan.html

Couldn’t see another thread but excuse me if I’ve missed it.

So shielding is currently paused and it looks like there’s a plan to restart it and with extended to more people.

It's not just those shielding, it's their household members too, i.e. spouses, children, etc - they wouldn't be able to go to work/school either

It never meant any of that!

It meant that the advice was you reduced contact with anyone out of your home and stayed away from shops, public transport etc but no one could make you do that.

@JinglingHellsBells you are mistaken I am on the shielding list and children of shielded parents were not and still aren’t in cases of local shielding attending school. It’s in the government guidance for schools.
Also many partners provided personal care couldn’t social distance in the home and so they too had to shield.

NervousInYorkshire · 13/09/2020 18:37

I was put on the shielding list last time because of insulin controlled type 2 with a long term far too high hba1c, along with moderate asthma. I asked my surgery on Fri whether shielding is unpausing, and my doctor's advice was to call the shielding service, which basically says shielding is paused except in specific areas with restrictions.

I can cope with shielding again if it happens. I've started getting texts from the council for the first time since shielding paused, saying cases are rising and reminding me to continue taking strict social distancing and hygiene precautions.

This was on the 11th:
"Coronavirus Alert! The rate of coronavirus is increasing in [city]. Please take extra precautions to stay safe. When outside your home: keep 2m distance from others, wear a face covering and wash your hands regularly. At home: clean frequently used surfaces and handles with antibacterial disinfectant. At the first sign of you or somebody in your home developing symptoms you should isolate and order a free home test kit by ringing 119. For more advice on staying safe, and the latest [city] guidance and [website]"

Yesterday's was
"Coronavirus Alert! If people you live with have regular contact with a large number of people at work, school, on public transport or when socialising, they can help keep you safe by changing clothes and washing their hands when they return home. At the first sign of you or somebody in your home developing symptoms you should isolate and order a free home test kit by ringing 119."

Not sure if other people nearby have been getting them too.

@NervousInYorkshire
URGENT ALERT: Please take extra care as someone who has previously needed to shield. COVID-19 positive cases are high and rapidly increasing in X CITY. You are particularly vulnerable. Take special care during this worrying period and be extra cautious. To keep yourself safe: limit your social contacts, follow the 2 metre rule, wash your hands with soap and water often; wear a face covering over your mouth and nose where social distancing is not possible outdoors and indoors; avoiding crowds and going to places that are not COVID-19 secure - if they are not looking after you, don't go there! Stay safe

AldiAisleofCrap · 13/09/2020 18:42

@NervousInYorkshire that was my text

NervousInYorkshire · 13/09/2020 18:45

Thanks @AldiAisleofCrap - interesting that mine hasn't mentioned me previously shielding. I wonder if I've been de-listed...

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/09/2020 18:46

Also many partners provided personal care couldn’t social distance in the home and so they too had to shield.

Nothing to do with personal care but if one of us had to shield we couldn't social distance in the home as we only have one bedroom. We're also resigned to the fact that of one of us gets Covid the other will as we can't isolate from each other.

EwwSprouts · 13/09/2020 18:46

Other than healthcare I can’t think of a single business that hasn’t lost money

Caravan manufacture is booming. Local big employer guaranteeing overtime til the end of the year. DH works in manufacturing and they never closed, having a very busy year. DS & I went to the seaside last week. I've never seen it so busy and I hope the ice-cream shops etc have made up for the closures earlier in the year.

Yes, there's doom and gloom but there are also some good news stories out there.

canigooutyet · 13/09/2020 18:47

VitD is so important for us all. We shouldn't be encouraging people to stay locked inside away from the sun.

Getting bread companies to chuck in VitD doesn't solve the issue. Many people do watch their carb intake because of health/dieting.

I would still be screwed anyway. Even with eating VitD rich foods, getting as much sun as I can, having supplements, I'm still deficient.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/09/2020 18:48

Jesus, it was just a joke.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/09/2020 18:49

The company I work for has done a lot better than we expected as the components we manufacture were switched into medical applications meaning we've been extremely busy, not that I'm complaining

AldiAisleofCrap · 13/09/2020 18:50

@PinkSparklyPussyCat We're also resigned to the fact that of one of us gets Covid the other will as we can't isolate from each other. sorry pinky that bit of guidance really irritated me.

Southernsoftie76 · 13/09/2020 18:51

@midgebabe yes, jog on the spot in your small flat for 6 months, don’t go out, your mental health isn’t as important as the young people who’s mental health will suffer if they don’t go to the pub.

QueenPaws · 13/09/2020 18:51

I'm still shielding pretty much. Like @EleanorOalike I have neutropenia and I really don't want any infection as I can't fight it off. Mine is autoimmune, I have other conditions but they don't affect me as much

feelingverylazytoday · 13/09/2020 18:57

They did use to fortify flour in this country, with all sorts of things, milk too, but then nearly everyone used to eat these things.
Not exercising outside doesn't make sense, unless you're extremely vulnerable. Otherwise just be careful. It's already known that the risk of transmission is very low outdoors.

midgebabe · 13/09/2020 18:58

It is making them dispensable because you are asking others to stop living for an indeterminate amount of time because you don't want to make any sacrifice

The alternative, is to ask everyone to do a bit so that the vulnerable are not put under house arrest

Many vulnerables will take extra care but are forced into house arrest if no one is prepared to give a little space in a park or supermarket

EDSGFC · 13/09/2020 18:59

Not exercising outside doesn't make sense, unless you're extremely vulnerable.

But that's exactly the advice for shielded people - don't go out, even for exercise.

BBCONEANDTWO · 13/09/2020 19:01

I know at least 3 people who were 'shielding' first time round who went to the shops, visited their family etc.

It's to gonna work.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/09/2020 19:02

People were invited to shield, it wasn't compulsory.

Danceswithgeckos · 13/09/2020 19:08

Do we think they will put t1s on the list?

NervousInYorkshire · 13/09/2020 19:09

@EDSGFC

Not exercising outside doesn't make sense, unless you're extremely vulnerable.

But that's exactly the advice for shielded people - don't go out, even for exercise.

Possibly at the beginning, it did change though. This was from my council at the beginning of June:

"The advice to shield remains in place. Updated advice means you can spend time outdoors safely once a day with members of your household. Or if you live alone, with one other person. Maintain strict physical 2m distance at all times, do not enter enclosed areas and wash your hands when you return home. Support to help you shield is still available, including practical and emotional support."
I'm fairly sure it was ok to go out for exercise at this point - I'll I'll double check though.

user1497207191 · 13/09/2020 19:10

@FourTeaFallOut

People were invited to shield, it wasn't compulsory.
So what? Anyone wanting to avoid catching it would shield or be close to shielding. Of course some people didn't care and didn't shield.
notevenat20 · 13/09/2020 19:10

do you mean those who chose to shield versus those who were advised to shield?

Locally quite of people were just nervous and so described themselves as shielding.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/09/2020 19:13

The point is some people were invited to shield and some declined to do so and if BBC knew of several people who were happy to absorb that risk and go to the shops, then they were well within their right to do so and is of nobody else's concern.

NervousInYorkshire · 13/09/2020 19:13

I'm still unsure about exercise, but after my shielding started, I think I went out my house/garden for the first time at the beginning of June.

SaltyAndFresh · 13/09/2020 19:14

As a secondary teacher in my mid-40s with a BMI of 33, unable realistically to socially distance and without widespread mask use in school, I will undoubtedly have to get the fuck on with it until I drop.
