Do you think you'll eventually get it whether you're being careful/shielding? I still don't know whether I've had it. I'm waiting until pay day to pay for an antibody test because I'm starting to think I've definitely had it.

From Jan right up until now I've had coughs, fever, bunged up nose, aching limbs, fatigue, headaches, sore throats.. None which I've ever suffered from before for a long time. Last time I had a fever from a virus was in 2018! I had a fever twice this year.

I haven't had it (unless I was completely asymptotic). I'm in my 40s and in good health, so I'm not too worried about getting it.

MissConductUS · 11/09/2020 19:33

Even if they show previous Covid infection you can get it again

Reinfection seems to be very, very rare. Another thing that's not commonly understood is that even the PCR tests use a viral load cut off. Above the cutoff and you're positive, below and you're negative. Viral loads can go up and down, so it's not a simple yes/no situation.

JS87 · 11/09/2020 19:36

I know people who have definitely had it but negative antibody test (presumably generated T cell immunity instead) so even if you get an antibody test it won't confirm that you haven't already had it.

MadisonMontgomery · 11/09/2020 19:36

I haven’t had it (had antibody test) and tbh I’m not worried in the slightest - I share an office with people who had it and came to work with it (at the beginning when we didn’t know all the symptoms) and I didn’t catch it despite sitting next to them, touching them and sharing a printer etc so if I didn’t catch it then I can’t see how I would now.

TSSDNCOP · 11/09/2020 19:36

I have not had it.

I work in an environmental where it is highly likely I would get it, but still haven't.

I take all precautions, follow guidance (even though it makes me scream in frustration), hygiene and SD.

If I get it it will be because, despite all this, it's still a nasty little bastard.

MillieEpple · 11/09/2020 19:39

I've not had it and i expect to get it eventually. I am really pleased that treatments have improved and i hope they keep improving.

MrBucket · 11/09/2020 19:42

I have no idea - I had a few bugs over the winter but I was pregnant so was exhausted and wiped out by everything I caught. I’m not worried about catching Covid any more than I am worried about catching other viruses - I don’t want to be ill and they all have the potential to cause long term fatigue or other difficulties, so I don’t want to catch them but I also don’t believe that even with “shielding“ it’s possible to be completely “safe” from something like that. Nor do I expect other people to take on the burden of responsibility of not passing germs around beyond basic hygiene, it’s just not possible

november90 · 11/09/2020 19:42

Part of me thinks my ds1 has it in feb. He was unwel for a while... he had chicken pox and then started with this horrendous cough and cold. He seemed to only cough at night and coughed so much he was sick! It was so scary! He was given meds for tonsillitis but the doctor was unsure! I'd love to know if he's had it!
I don't think most people will have had it/will get it. I think it's been floating around a lot longer then we know!

dingledongle · 11/09/2020 19:56

Waiting to catch it from my kids who are both at Secondary school.
Otherwise I take sensible precautions. 🤷‍♀️

WildAboutMyPlanet · 11/09/2020 19:57

Lots of people saying they definitely haven’t, but you could be symptomless! I have no idea if I’ve had it or not, and may never know!

I hope I’ve either had it and not known or won’t get it at all to be honest. I wouldn’t elect to have it for sure.

redcarbluecar · 11/09/2020 19:59

No idea. On the one hand several of my colleagues had it just after we locked down, so I maybe do work in the type of place where it spreads easily. On the other hand, I've never had any symptoms and am not usually susceptible to things that are going round. I don't live in fear of it, but would be scared if I got it.

Readandwalk · 11/09/2020 20:02

I'm assuming I'll get it this winter. Teacher in a school with 1500 students. I've built myself up health wise during lockdown. Lost weight, ate well, exercise a lit. I rarely even catch a cold have longevity on both sides and no health concerns.

Of course this all could mean nothing but its gives mr some assurance.

jessycake · 11/09/2020 20:03

I haven't had it , but I do expect to get it .I think it was here in December/January too, I had some friends who were ill for weeks with a dreadful cough and fatigue and a couple of people I know had pneumonia and were in hospital , one had to come home quite early and have a team come in ,as it was so busy .

byvirtue · 11/09/2020 20:06

I’m not concerned about getting it I know 2 people who had it in lockdown and none since. Rates are very low where I live, my husband was sent an antibody test and unsurprisingly it was negative. I’m more concerned about the long term implication on my toddlers immune system as she hasn’t had a snivel since pre lockdown, that is not normal!

Staffy1 · 11/09/2020 20:07

I don't think I've had it. Had something in feb/March, a bloody sore throat, quite unbearable in the evenings and night time which lasted ages, but don't think it was covid. I do think we will all get it eventually if no vaccine comes some time soon and I am terrified for my DS and me.

puffinkoala · 11/09/2020 20:11

I don't think any of us can categorically say we've not had it.

PilatesPeach · 11/09/2020 20:14

I haven't had it to my knowledge.

I am being careful and not really socialising but I am working - I teach exercise classes at various clubs - again everyone is distancing.

I will have the vaccination once it is available.

Listening to the radio today though, I did start thinking I would might well end up getting it in the next 6 months just because the cases are rising and we are unlikely to lockdown on a wide scale again - I hope I am wrong - I am prepared to sacrifice my social life as I actually need to keep working to earn money and do enjoy doing things by myself and with my dog.

elppaenip · 11/09/2020 20:21

I expect that everybody on the planet will get it eventually, yes. But by then hopefully the virus will be less virulent, and there will be more effective treatments.

BlusteryShowers · 11/09/2020 20:43

I haven't experienced any of the symptoms. We self isolated because my son had a fever and was a bit off colour just as we went into lockdown but neither DH or I were unwell at all.

I think I've a decent chance of getting it via DH's work and my son's nursery but I don't see me being the one to catch it. I am more concerned about my susceptibility to bugs as a whole given how 'clean' we've had to be this year. I'm a teacher and I've never been off sick with cold/flu in over 12 years.

DianasLasso · 11/09/2020 20:48

Rural county, low rate of covid infections so far, even at the height of the first wave in April. But... I do have a track record of taking colds really badly, and if I get a chest infection in, say, November, I usually end up with a persistent cough till the spring. Also over 50. So I'm dreading getting it - if I do, I think I will be very seriously ill.

AgeLikeWine · 11/09/2020 21:02

I’m reasonably sure I haven’t had it, and seeing as I work from home and I’m ultra-careful every time I leave the house I’m hopeful of dodging the bullet. As an asthmatic, I have to do everything I reasonably can to stay safe.

PuzzledObserver · 11/09/2020 21:14

I don’t think I’ve had it and on balance I don’t think I will, because I am respecting all the guidance and being v careful. So I am not using all of the freedoms we’re currently allowed, e.g I’ve had a few takeaways and sat outdoors at cafe, but only been indoors in a cafe once. I’ve made two visits to someone else’s garden, had one visitor to ours and one inside the house - that’s it.

This is because I’m at increased risk and I want to avoid it if possible.

bananaskinsnomnom · 11/09/2020 21:20

Way back in December, the absence rate in my class at school was very high - my colleagues said it always is towards the end of term but it was that notch higher this time - there was also a very strong cough / sore throat deal going round.

Enter January - children coughing like crazy. A good solid few weeks where all children were coughing like gel and so were most of the staff. I had a fever over a weekend with said cough and sore throat....was this it? Will likely never know. We’ve discussed the chain of events regarding everyone’s illnesses at the time and most of us conclude that we are working with young children and this happens a lot. Illness in the winter is so common.

I have no idea if I’ve had it or not. Out of pure curiosity I would love the antibody test but first off it’s not being deemed reliable by everyone, and second aren’t they now saying that you’re not necessarily immune after having it? Not sure if there’s any point!

I’m being careful but it’s getting harder. I’m back at school - surrounded by children and in close quarters with plenty of adults. I have to get the bus to work there and back - going extra early to avoid crowds, but it’s still the bus at the end of the day. Doing main shopping online but still have to top up. I still carry hand sanitiser around and I wear a mask when required. I keep my distance from people as best as I can. I was in school for the summer term (second half) and I know the children in my bubble were mixing left right and center (believe me I was told all about the birthday parties and events they were still attending despite everything) so I half feel I’ve been exposed so much already that I could already have had it? Probably a naive view. I have no idea.

Hoping so badly for a better 2021!

everythingisginandroses · 11/09/2020 21:20

I got sick in mid-March (no testing back then, I live/work/commute in a hotspot and about a dozen people in my office and same number in DH's office came down with same symptoms at this time). At first I was fairly relaxed about it, thought I'd shake it off easily enough. I'm 44, fit and healthy, walked everywhere, martial arts weekly, no pre-existing conditions, not BAME. I had a slight cough, flushed skin, sore throat and headache, but it was manageable and I've worked through worse. I was very tired, though.

On day 5 I started to feel out of breath folding laundry, walking upstairs, etc. Days 8-12 I felt very bad indeed, honestly thought I might go hospital-grade and I am not an anxious person. Horrible heart palpitations and low grade fever went on for several weeks afterwards and I had to do breathing exercises at night for a good 50 days. I still get a few shooting pains and general achiness in my lungs when I lie down to sleep. It is no joke and I would encourage people of my age not to be complacent, you just don't know how this thing will affect you (as one of the paramedics said to me after I coughed up blood on day 12).

Dontrainonmyparade · 11/09/2020 21:37

I genuinely think I had it in December. I had had a flu jab, but first DC became unwell v suddenly and I was quite stressed that I couldn’t get her temp under control, I’ve never had that with any of my children before. The next day I also felt awful, fever and throat - We spent 24-48 hours in bed before she was well as suddenly as she had become ill and I returned her to nursery so that I could stagger back home to go back to bed. I was like that for a week or so with fatigue and I developed a horrible cough that lasted about 8 weeks all in. All over Christmas I was being told o should see a GP and I kept saying what for, It’s not productive, it’s not a chest infection, just a really horrible sounding cough. Anyway, eventually I got better and now that there’s some reports that it was here so early I very much think I had it. The strange thing is that only DC3 and I were affected. DH and other DC - nothing.

I wonder about antibodies but it’s now so long ago I don’t think a test would be conclusive and I wonder about catching it again too, and whether it would be less severe a second time. Who knows? It’s the unknown that makes it hard to think practically sometimes. I hope I’ve had it, I hope my family all had it too but some weren’t symptomatic, and mostly I hope we don’t get it again!
