Birmingham on Lockdown

FractionalGains · 11/09/2020 14:53

Just been announced Birmingham going to be put on a local lockdown. Infection rates less than 100 per 100000. 7 in intensive care. Doesn’t seem like the nhs is on the brink of being overwhelmed?

Watch the Sky News piece on Northwick Park Hospital , that will give you an insight.

Nicknamegoeshere · 11/09/2020 23:37

So if people such as grandparents can't provide childcare, how do working parents do all of the school runs? For example I'm a teacher. My parents take my youngest to school and also pick him up.

jessstan2 · 11/09/2020 23:51

Funny, my son went up to Birmingham on Wednesday to do a presentation somewhere, he's just got home. He didn't mention lockdown. Yes, it must be a poor lockdown though for all I know, those involved could have kept their distance and wore masks, etc.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Timeforanotherusername · 12/09/2020 00:02

jess i gets you didn't watch the news today?Blush

Gingernaut · 12/09/2020 00:07

I live and work in West Mids.

The numpties I've seen failing to properly mask up around shops, centres and stations is awful.

Failing to maintain 2 metres, failing to sanitise hands (There are gel dispensers in almost EVERY shop), even failing to wash hands after going to the toilet! 🤮

Ignorance, bone headed contrariness, arrogance, complacency and just plain stupidity.

We are seeing 'up ticks' in cases in my hospital as well.

x2boys · 12/09/2020 00:16

I'm in Bolton we can't meet anyone indoors or out ,pubs, restaurants etc can only sell takeaways and everything has to close by 10 .

Gentleness · 12/09/2020 00:27

This is the guidance: www.gov.uk/guidance/birmingham-sandwell-and-solihull-local-restrictions

Gentleness · 12/09/2020 00:28

So many questions...

ceeveebee · 12/09/2020 00:36

I live in Trafford and we have had these restrictions in place since 31 July, despite the fact that our infection rate has never been any higher than 40/100,000 - no idea when we will be released - and no exemption for family members to provide childcare which to be honest, we are ignoring.

RedRumTheHorse · 12/09/2020 05:45

You are suppose to use a registered child care provider like a childminder or school club.

Since lots of before/after school clubs aren't running and many childminders have closed down that's not going to be easy even if you can afford to pay for it.

middleager · 12/09/2020 06:01

I've seen poor compliance for sure. Last week in Stetchford only 5 in 20 in a shop had masks. Are you telling me 15 were exempt? In Perry Barr it was the same story.

There are more than 25 schools impacted in just a week. My own go to inner city secondary schools so I keep waiting for the text...

What's laughable is the 'Royal' borough of Sutton Coldfield claiming they should be exempt. I've experienced poor compliance there - not like the places mentioned in my 1st paragraph, but at the garden centre, lots of well heelwd customers not wearing masks, or muzzles as they would probably call them!

Friendsoftheearth · 12/09/2020 06:13

I have nothing to add that will be helpful apart from knowing now that the quicker and harder you lockdown before the virus is out of control, the quicker they can lift the restrictions when the numbers come down.

Certain areas have seen restrictions eased relatively quickly. So compliance is key if you want it to be over quickly.

We have 100% mask wearing here everywhere, people wearing gloves too, and socially distancing, and no one is meeting up in groups or at all. We have extremely low numbers, and have had no cases at all for a months.

Gingernaut · 12/09/2020 11:42

Birmingham New Street (aka Not so Grand Central after a lot of major shops have closed down) is a massive interchange outside London with trains from all points of the compass passing through.

Passengers from high and low infection areas are converging and probably infecting/getting infected as they pass back and forth to change platforms or travel on to Moor Street for more connections.

Although Birmingham is spread out across a massive area, the city centre is relatively tiny and it would only take a couple of careless, infected people to do a lot of damage.

FTMF30 · 12/09/2020 12:59

@Gingernaut I personally prefer to use my own hand sanitizer rather than those in shops. The state of some of them is enough to make tour stomach wretch. They're also often in unlabeled bottles so you can't be sure what's in them. Or they are dirt cheap kinds that have barely any alcohol in them so are pointless.

Also, there is not a 2m rule anymore. It's 1m, but 2m where possible.

Blaming everyday people is just pointless. You don't know about their personal situation and you don't seem to be clued up on the rules.

Gingernaut · 12/09/2020 13:12

It's only 1m when extra precautions are also in place, such as face coverings, barriers etc

That's not happening. Much, if at all.

CrooksAndNannies · 12/09/2020 13:40

I'm confused.

I live outside of Brum but have a meal booked in the Cube next week, with a friend I don't live with.

Can I still eat with her?

Confused
AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/09/2020 13:42

yes - but if she lives in brum you can't meet up at her place

sunseekin · 12/09/2020 13:53

@FractionalGains you have always been allowed to help people in need / vulnerable people. Can you receive your mums support without putting her at risk. If you can then I am sure that PND would definitely fall into that category. Take care 💐

sunseekin · 12/09/2020 13:58

Or at least ask the question to your midwife team. Take care.

Maybe because the additional restrictions were only announced on Friday and don't come into effect until Tuesday 15th?

@hauntedvagina
@munchbunch12

Can anyone clarify the position with grandparents who currently provide childcare?

Well that's me unable to work for the foreseeable then.

middleager · 13/09/2020 08:56

Ginger I'm cancelling my family meal in Birmingham today as, given the protests, the 1k plus cases in the last week (inc. both my children's secondaries) and the fact I don't want to be called by t&t (did you see the Solihull restaurant with 25 cases?)

Today's local news asks if pubs, restaurants and gyms in the city should close:
