Everyone I have spoken to, or seen on SM have said how stupid it is and they will not be following the rule /law.

My dbs manager who owns the workplace. Was due to have a get together at home next sunday for their teens birthday.
They are now doing it at work. ( a garage.)
Has now said by doing it there and ' booking in the relatives cars for a visual inspection /safety check ' whilst waiting they could get together on forecourt spaced out, Because they would be 'customers' and they would be at work. And it's no different to it being random customers just because it's family.
So there would be 2 cars' booked in' one of. Which is a couple., one a family Of 3. Plus their own household of 4 (the teens work there weekends cleaning etc anyway)

Which made me think how silly the rule is. They can't do that in their garden but can on a forecourt (the garage is not on a main road or anything and out the way so unlikely to be seen)
@Refractory and I also despise “can you not just FaceTime them” to minimise distress at not seeing family, as though FaceTime is in any way a substitute for meeting up
If numbers keep going up what gets introduced next?

You can see people just keep numbers down. But in Birmingham you can’t, because numbers have shot up.

mrpumblechook · 11/09/2020 16:10

There clearly trying to do anything that will potentially reduce risk but at the same time not have an impact on the economy. If people don't follow the rules/law they will start closing café's, pubs and restaurants.

mrpumblechook · 11/09/2020 16:12

There They're

WheresMyMilk · 11/09/2020 16:14

@MarshaBradyo I am in Birmingham! Or at least affected by the “Birmingham lockdown”

It’s not so much if things should or shouldn’t be restricted it’s people’s minimisation of how shit it is. It may well be necessary but no one should try to downplay how horrendous it is.

notevenat20 · 11/09/2020 16:16

If we want schools to stay open, for the sake of children and the economy, then we all need to keep on making sacrifices to that end.

Yep.

Where I know it is shit, no mistake, but personally I find it better than when schools were shut and my yr5 was stuck at home all term, plus teen and toddler. And we couldn’t go out even as not much was open. Rather not go back to that!

Good luck in Birmingham not nice to be in hot spot, hope it passes soon.

IdblowJonSnow · 11/09/2020 16:18

I must admit I'm mtg friends for dinner next week. There are supposed to be 7 of us, however I happen to know one is ill and unlikely to make it (not covid related). If that's the case not breaking rules. If she's well enough to come (not contagious) then I'll go anyway.
After that one exception, if that's the case, I'll follow the rules. It's very unusual for me to meet in a group. Usually just meet one or 2 friends at a time.

DBML · 11/09/2020 16:20

I won’t be, because it’s nonsense.

ArabellaScott · 11/09/2020 16:23

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

I think those that have been affected by the virus, those vulnerable or family members who are and those that care about the wider society will.

There will be many who won’t though as selfish wants come before the big picture and the laws will get tougher and more restrictions in place.

This.
Makinglists · 11/09/2020 16:29

Our plans, nearly always, only involve 1 other household at a time. Though I'm not going to sweat over 1 or 2 over - I think the Scots and the Welsh have got it about right not counting under 12s - allows just a bit more flexibility for family meetings.

I follow every other rule/law religiously and make my own assesments of covid risk to my family and others before plannIng an activity. Personally I think the English version of this law is wrong.

Fawnfour · 11/09/2020 16:29

The rules maybe stupid n make no sense, but they are put in place for a reason and if your all not sticking to the law, then we have no hope whatever.

NewAutumnName · 11/09/2020 16:30

I have followed all the rules but this one is stupid and punishing the whole country for outbreaks in a few areas where stupid people have partied/congregated is wrong.

This time I will not follow the rules. Fed up of areas with high infection causing the rest of us with areas of low infection and following rules to suffer so they can go jump

anniegun · 11/09/2020 16:30

So the consensus is that people will only be breaking the law in a specific and limited way . At least that is consistent with government policy

TopBitchoftheWitches · 11/09/2020 16:31

@DBML what part is nonsense then?

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 11/09/2020 16:32

If anyone who doesn't comply with this law loses their jobs and moans in my presence about it they'll get short shrift from me. I've lost all sympathy for the non-compliant.

NewAutumnName · 11/09/2020 16:32

In our area the infection rate is nothing like that of Birmingham and the other places. The people of Birmingham have themselves to blame - their own stupidity!

mrsnorrismeow · 11/09/2020 16:32

Yes that's right, those of us who would mix with a group of 7 instead of 6 really don't care about wider society and we should all be taken out and shot.

DBML · 11/09/2020 16:32

What’s this magical reason then? I mean, my son is mingling with hundreds of kids daily at school, I’m mingling with hundreds of people at work, as is DH. So why is ‘6’ important when it comes to the small cohort of people I know.

It’s utterly ridiculous (like most of the other rules) and I refuse to comply with such rubbish any longer.

cassgate · 11/09/2020 16:34

It’s about time the government allowed those people that they are trying to protect (the over 70,s, medically vulnerable etc) to make their own decisions about the level of risk they are willing to take with their lives. My in-laws are in their 80’s but are reasonably fit, healthy and active for their age. At the beginning of lockdown they were under strict instructions from their children that they should not go out and shopping would be done for them. Within 2 weeks they were fed up and took back control. They made that decision themselves that they would rather do things themselves and have us over as usual for weekly visits. We were led by them and did as they asked. We will continue to do this. If we visit them as a family of 4 we will automatically be breaking the rules because one of DH’s sisters lives with them so there would be 7 of us. If his other sister visits at the same time there are 11 in total. We have done this all through lockdown and will continue as long as they are happy too. If they want to stop and follow the rules we will. If this carries on over Xmas we will have DH’s 92 year old aunt with us as well so there will be 12 round the dinner table as usual. I will however not have my usual New Year’s Eve party as there would be 30 odd people from multiple households and my risk assessment says this is too risky. For the vast majority of people this is a virus that is mild and the only reason we have the rules is to protect the people that are more likely to die from it. Let those people make their own decisions and let the rest of us get on with it.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2020 16:35

It’s all they can work with atm given priority to education and economy.

If enough people ignore it the numbers will keep going up. More restrictions. Probably same as Birmingham around socialisation. Then more still.

Not everyone in the area of high infection has been "breaking the rules". Even if they were doing the same thing is really childish. They don't care infection rates go up in your area.
FourTeaFallOut · 11/09/2020 16:35

The people of Birmingham have themselves to blame - their own stupidity!

You honestly believe that the driver for the increased infection rates in particular areas is stupidly? Well, that just speaks for itself.

cologne4711 · 11/09/2020 16:36

All the rule is doing is codifying the guidance which I would have hoped peopel woudl follow - ie 6 people only. As they were too stupid/selfish to, the law has had to have been brought into line (which should have been the case to start with).

I do think it's stupid to have such a small limit outside but I won't intentionally breach it (if I meet up with friends for a run and it turns out that there are 8 of us, we may technically breach the rules until we divide into two groups of four).

And I think excluding children (in Scotland) is a nonsense, although babes in arms shouldn't counted.

But it's not hard to follow the rules, just as it's not hard (for most) to wear a face mask where it's required. Fed up with all the excuses, nobody is special.

Racoonworld · 11/09/2020 16:36

Thing is it is working if people are now saying they will mix with 7 people and not 6, rather than 12 or larger numbers.

MarshaBradyo · 11/09/2020 16:36

You’ll be ok if R stays under 1. Otherwise it can change pretty quickly.
