Have I overreacted? 3 year old

My dc has woken with a temperature - I've booked a test but now I'm wondering if I've overreacted as it could be anything and it will be horrible for him (the test) but we are a large family at multiple schools and dc who is poorly attends nursery so could potentially infect lots of people.
What would you have done?

You’ve followed the advice correctly and done the right thing.

anothernamereally · 11/09/2020 11:42

You're right I know - when I informed the nursery they just sounded really shocked that I'd booked a test and kept going on about how awful it would be and that they've all had sore throats Confused- it made me doubt myself

If he is nursery age you just have to do nostrils - I did both my DC last week, the baby cried while I was doing it but my 4 year old just said "ow" and then asked for his sweets.
I did myself including throat and it was uncomfortable but better than say a dentist check up.

anothernamereally · 11/09/2020 12:03

That's reassuring @Camomila thank you

I know a 4 year old who had a test, didnt like it but wasn't too bad, no tears.

A temperature is a symptom you have done the right thing.

cheeseandcrackers · 11/09/2020 12:07

Not overreacting at all. DS was coughing lots last night. He's conpletely fine, almost certainly just a cold but as it's a covid symptom the whole houshold has isolated at home and I've booked a test for this evening. It does seem silly as he is nound to get lots of coughs at nursery but those are the guidelines and hopefully will get negative result tomorrow and back to normal on Monday

anothernamereally · 11/09/2020 12:17

I'm hoping the results come back quickly as his brother is due to start uni this week.

I called the schools of siblings (they had left before dc got up) as I know we need to self isolate but have been told to just pick them up as normal Confused

You've definitely done the right thing. My DS(8) is going for his second test since returning to school. He always gets a fever when he's unwell, even with the cold (which this seems to be - most of his friends had it). DS2(12) has had to stay home too - he ain't happy! If you or you child has one or more of the main symptoms and you decide not to test, then you're stuck at home self-isolating for two weeks.

Sjl479 · 11/09/2020 13:00

I’ve tested my 15 month old twice now, just up the nostrils, it’s not bad at all

UpToonGirl · 11/09/2020 13:03

My 3yr old is booked in for a test today. I am pretty sure he just has a cold but with temp and cough he needs to get tested. I've told him we're going out to the doctors in a bit and he is not happy already so am worried he's going to kick off! He's usually very compliant but when he is ill he gets very grouchy.

Fingers crossed we both get negative results!

anothernamereally · 11/09/2020 14:32

We've been - not too nice but not horrendous either and not too many tears. He had to do throat and nostril

OP posts:
UpToonGirl · 11/09/2020 16:02

Yes, we've just been, throat and nostril as well. Was fine, no tears. Just have to wait and see now.

anothernamereally · 11/09/2020 16:30

Let's hope the results are swift!

JadesRollerDisco · 11/09/2020 16:34

I'm probably OTT too but we do our temperatures every morning now before going anywhere, and before bed. I just do it quickly when we brush our teeth. I do it in the morning so that we don't take it out into the world with us, but at bedtime so I have a bit of time to cancel/rearrange any arrangements etc.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 11/09/2020 16:41

You did the right thing, weve all been tested this week including 2yr old, 3yr old and 5yr old. Its not pleasant but it doesnt hurt and its over in seconds. I had sweets on the side ready to hand over as soon as it was done

anothernamereally · 12/09/2020 08:32

Result came through at 6am - negative thank goodness.
So from booking to result was 20 hours!

Are you in an area currently with high numbers? It's just so infuriating that we can get our staff tested as no space. (I'm about to book private for then but at £150 a go we can't afford to do this every time)

Pleaeed you have negative

anothernamereally · 12/09/2020 15:34

That is frustrating! Numbers here are quite high yes

UpToonGirl · 12/09/2020 15:48

@anothernamereally great news. Our results are not back yet, will be happy if they come back by Monday so the kids can go to school.

Why are you both getting tested?
Marmite27 · 12/09/2020 15:51

My 2 year old was tested, nose and throat, didn’t even blink.

anothernamereally · 12/09/2020 16:10

@Torvean32 I presume 'both' meant both our children rather than her and her child

What temperature were the various children showing?

I think testing temp daily is good (we do) It gives you a better idea of what's normal for your child.

I wouldn't rush a small child straight for a test with just a slightly higher than normal temperature, young children often have a bit of a temperature.

They say 37.8 for adults. I can't find a specific number for children, but I'd book a test if they were reading that high & calpol wasn't bringing it down. (Not sure if that's right or not, but that's what I'd do).
