Well 4 days of being back at preschool my little boy has a runny nose.. no cough, no high temp.. would we need to test.. he's otherwise absolutely fine ?

No need to test.
If he has either a temp, new cough or loss of taste or smell (difficult to check with kids) then he would need a test.

arethereanyleftatall · 10/09/2020 20:53

No! If people start testing for a runny nose, this winter is going to be chaos!

rainbowunicorn · 10/09/2020 20:55

Only get a test if they have symptoms. A runny nose is not one of tehe symptoms to test for. The three main symptoms are clearly on the NHS website, the government website and every where you look so I can't understand why people come on here day after day with these questions.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/09/2020 20:55

No. A runny nose is not one of the main symptoms, he doesn't need a test.

Info from my preschool is..if its clear its fine..if its green its notConfused

peakotter · 10/09/2020 20:59

We’ve been back at school a month and it seems like every child has had it. They’ve specifically asked us not to test unless one of the three key symptoms is present.

Raindancer411 · 10/09/2020 21:00

Just to clarify green can mean an infection and not Covid though

Louise91417 · 10/09/2020 21:02

I thought green didnt necessarily mean covid when i read info from preschool..tbh im not going to read anymore info because it just confuses me even moreHmm

unchienandalusia · 10/09/2020 22:01

Ffs this messaging has been perfectly clear.

Continuous cough
Fever
Loss of Taste/smell

Otherwise no. You'll be one of the people using up tests for those who actually have symptoms.

Xuli · 10/09/2020 22:07

Interesting that there's another thread running tonight for a family that has colds but have started coughing and they've been told on here to test...

klippya · 10/09/2020 22:21

A snotty nose is not a covid symptom. God my 3yr old basically had a snotty nose for the entirety of last autumn/winter.

MarcelineMissouri · 10/09/2020 22:24

@Xuli that’s different though - a cough is a testable symptom, a runny nose is not.

celerystix · 10/09/2020 22:37

Ffs no

This
Why is it so hard for people to understand
A quick google on the gov website would of told you this .
A sniffle is not a symptom of Covid , until they demand mandatory testing for all only go if you have the symptoms.
People that need a test in some parts of the country are struggling to get one .

islockdownoveryet · 10/09/2020 22:55

Yes @Xuli because have you have said they starting coughing .

covid.joinzoe.com/post/back-to-school
I think the reason people keep asking about what symptoms to test for in children is because the "official" list of symptoms are known not to reflect the reality, as the latest research from the Zoe app people confirms. But I do agree people shouldn't book a test just because their child has a runny nose.

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/09/2020 02:30

We're also 4 days back here, runny nose started late this afternoon, but otherwise fine in himself, just through the night then started to feel hot and temp has now progressed and seems to have developed a cough Sad

Grrretel · 11/09/2020 11:10

Runny nose is a covid symptom in children but it's not a testable symptom (at the moment).

No it isn't
It's not what's required for a test .
Temperature
New continuous cough
Loss if taste are the symptoms

LilyPond2 · 11/09/2020 19:04

@islockdownoveryet Read back what you have just written!

islockdownoveryet · 11/09/2020 19:40

Eh ?runny nose isn't a cough , a temperature or loss of taste .
Runny nose isn't a symptom.
sorry have I said something wrong it's been a long day ?

pinkbalconyrailing · 11/09/2020 19:44

no need to test but you need to carefully read your preschool's guidance on cold symptoms.
in our school's it says to keep children at home for any cold symptoms until all symptoms have gone away.

murgatroid · 11/09/2020 19:47

Our whole family have colds - runny noses & sore throats. DS got it first after his first week in school, and now we all have it. None of us have a temp or cough though, so carrying on as normal.

Grrretel · 11/09/2020 20:18

Runny nose is a symptom. Covid has a lot of symptoms including muscle aches, head aches, sort throat, d&v and a rash. However, at the moment in the UK we are only testing on the basis of the three main symptoms of cough, fever, and loss of taste/smell. So - "Runny nose is a covid symptom in children but it's not a testable symptom (at the moment)."
