A very small Christmas this year

I think Chris Witty has basically said the 6 people rule will last months so I’m assuming families are going to have very small Christmas’s this year. In a way it will be so much more relaxing. I won’t be cooking a big lunch for me and two kids.

I missed that part, did he say months? I can see many people breaking the rules over Christmas 🙈

Coldwinterahead1 · 09/09/2020 18:48

He said we can expect this for many months

Babyfairy0923 · 09/09/2020 18:48

Thank you I missed that.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 09/09/2020 18:49

I can't see many people sticking to 6 people over Xmas. There will be a desire to have a good Christmas after the year we've had and forget about the virus. Possibly people will reconsider travelling internationally to see family.

Coldwinterahead1 · 09/09/2020 18:50

If it’s still the law then people won’t have a choice.

We are just praying Dsis will be allowed to join us, she has severe autism/learning difficulties and we haven’t seen her more than 10 minutes since Feb as carers won’t allow/don’t think it’s safe .

She and we are utterly desperate for her to be allowed to visit at Christmas, but it’s looking more and more likely she’ll be alone with her carer and her flatmate - they have to socially distance from each other at all times (unless needing personal care) so a shit holiday all round ...

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 18:53

I really dont think people who are going to work every day, with kids who are going to school every day, are going to see the point of sitting at home for Christmas because BJ asked them to. People have had a hard year. There isnt enough support for the government to comply.

GreyGardens88 · 09/09/2020 18:55

Yes, that's the silver lining. No boxing day with insufferable relatives I only see once a year anyway!

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 09/09/2020 18:55

I'm.... not sure I would assume that OP!

SqidgeBum · 09/09/2020 18:56

And who will be enforcing this law for the entire population? Or will we all be told to spend our christmas sitting at our windows reporting our neighbours if they have a family of 5 over like we are in Orwells head?

I don’t look it as as supporting the government. I think of it as doing something that benefits the whole of society. Breaking the rules is selfish behaviour as it impacts on everyone. People can then carry the virus’s back to shops, pubs, schools workplaces etc.

BunsyGirl · 09/09/2020 18:59

We will have 7 as usual. Given that the local police station was closed years ago due to budget cuts, I can’t imagine that the police will be knocking on our door!

Which is fine, but that pretty clearly isn't an attitude replicated across the whole of society. A government needs a lot of trust and support from the population for restrictive measures like these to be actually followed. They had it back in March. They don't now.

It'll be all round to Dominic Cummings then on the 25th. Or the 26th for those with other plans for Christmas day.

sandragreen · 09/09/2020 19:18

Won't it be bloody lovely!!!

He looks like he wouldn't season the turkey adequately. Don't ask me why, just a hunch.
user1493413286 · 09/09/2020 19:24

Actual Christmas Day wouldn’t bother me as I’d love the excuse just to do it with the 4 of us but all the surrounding festivities would be hard

KetoPenguin · 09/09/2020 19:27

I expect he will be going up to Durham to see his family so I would head up North. It's what any good parent would do.

AutumnLeavesStart · 09/09/2020 19:28

Actually there is enough support for it. Strong majority in favour of the move according to polls. Most people, not being absolute shits, are quite keen that we do our best to avoid killing the elderly and vulnerable.

newwnamme · 09/09/2020 19:29

That's an extremely optimistic stance op (that people will have to if it's the law). What on earth makes you think everyone is going to stick to this in the privacy of their own homes when it is such a ridiculously blunt tool? Support for this government and their plans has long been lost in many quarters. I'll bet my christmas Turkey that there will be plenty of people who will continue to make their own assessments of risks vs benefits. I can promise you I certainly will be.

SummerHouse · 09/09/2020 19:33

My DP described a nuclear family only Christmas as "his dream."

We normally have about 16. I am a bit sad but already thinking of all the positives and the lack of the aftermath....

MaxNormal · 09/09/2020 19:38

I'm not so sure about that. That was the YouGov poll. I'm signed up to that, and I was getting them through quite frequently. Recently - nada. Coincidentally after I'd put what an awful job I think the government is doing on the last one I filled in.
So I wonder if they were quite selective in who they asked.

AutumnLeavesStart · 09/09/2020 19:40

If you think a poll is invalid because you weren’t a respondent, it’s not really worth discussing it.

KetoPenguin · 09/09/2020 19:41

Yeah never seen so much hate for a policy on MN. I think the polls are rigged too.

There are polls about this policy applying at Christmas? Where?
