Second wave and no lockdown. Possible?

MalbecLARGE · 08/09/2020 12:25

Hi,

So I've been trying really hard to keep my head, try not to overthink and worry, but tbh, I'm starting to crack and I know I'm not alone.

It's looking like a second wave is coming and yes, bojo always said he "would not hesitate to put on the brakes" and have another full lockdown if it was needed, but does anyone actually think that will happen? Can our economy really handle another?!

If cases do continue to rise, but hospital admissions don't go crazy and the death rate stays "reasonably" low, so our NHS isn't overwhelmed, then isn't that really the bottom line/main criteria for another lockdown?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, I'm just getting really scared at the prospect that we'll all be back to square one very soon.

My MH was pretty bad, as was my DM towards the end of the last one. My DD just went back to school today and it's heart breaking to think that the rug will be pulled from under her and all other dc before they've even really started Sad

What is anyone thinking?

It will be a very last resort- things would have to be absolute carnage for the whole country to go into lockdown. They’ll carry on doing what they’re doing now which is local lockdowns and keeping schools open so people can go to work

Pinkmakeupbag · 08/09/2020 12:35

Don't know but I feel exactly the same as you.

Dc have only just gone back to school and it would be dreadful for them to miss more months.

I know a lot of people who have lost jobs and businesses over this. If you go through town centres there are loads of places shit down.

Another lockdown would surely wreak havoc. I'm more scared of the impact on our livelihoods and my children's welfare than I am of the virus.

But we just don't know do we? I don't think people will abide by another full lockdown either.

RancidOldHag · 08/09/2020 12:36

I think we should believe them when they say they would use a lockdown. Just like when they said they would use local restrictions, or quarantines, or partly close schools when bubbles burst.

If we want to avoid it, we need to use the measures short of lockdown so that cases do not rise (as they are showing signs of doing already)

So 2m unless necessary and mitigated, frequent handwashing, and isolating properly if you are a contact.

Plus not breaking the rules on mixing households socially (just because the rules are different for different activities does not mean you use the latest for all occasions)

Qasd · 08/09/2020 12:37

I do think it is highly unlikely at the very least some stuff that had to shut last time will open as not really demonstrated as a big risk (non essential retail). I think they may have a national shut down of pubs and restaurants for dine in, or secandary schools but not everything like last time.

frozendaisy · 08/09/2020 12:56

I think if schools are set up for online learning, all schools I know some did successfully last lockdown, a second full-fat lockdown will happen.

Depends entirely on hospital admissions, but I think if cases rise people will naturally stay in, away from people, not spend.

user1487194234 · 08/09/2020 13:00

I think it will be a last resort because the economy simply can't stand it
And neither can most people

Purplewithred · 08/09/2020 13:05

Agree with most poster above - lockdown was always really about keeping cases low so the NHS wasn't overwhelmed. If things stay as they are now - cases going up but mostly among the young, hospital admissions staying stable - I would imagine lockdowns will be kept very local and specific. But if (when) hospital cases start rising, that's when the very difficult decisions are going to have to be made.

The impression I get is that track and trace (for all its faults) is actually giving some useful information about how the new cases are spreading - ie in pubs and clubs in some areas, but from in-home visits in others. That might drive some differences.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 08/09/2020 13:05

Op Flowers This is shit isn't it? I can relate in that I've struggled so much.

No, I don't think there will be another lockdown unless in extreme circumstances. I know the cases rising is scary but it does still seem to be in younger people who are so unlikely to be seriously affected. It is still absolutely possible that the cases will level off/decline or they will rise steadily but with little signs of the death rates rising. We are definitely not in the same boat as in March. I do expect more people to die and I'm just hoping that more flu vaccinations, better care being taken by care homes/hospitals, better treatment options and understanding of the disease are going to keep things in check. And hopefully anyone vulnerable who can self-isolate will do so for the next few months to keep themselves safe.

Have you found Karol Sikora on Twitter? He's lovely and calm and positive whilst being factual and it helped me cope to look at his tweets through the worst of the virus a few months ago. I hope your dd gets to stay in school. It really is the best place for them.

middleager · 08/09/2020 13:06

I'm more scared of the impact on our livelihoods and my children's welfare than I am of the virus.

Same here. The Govt should have supported children, funded schools. Mine are in their GCSE years and already classes are being sent home in our area.

Delatron · 08/09/2020 13:21

I think things would have to get very bad before a second national lockdown. The fact we know more about the virus, how to treat it and are testing more means I don’t think we will get to March/April levels in terms of deaths.

I do think cases will continue to rise and there will be local lockdowns

I worry about the schools. The inequality gap will only continue to grow if some pupils are missing more school whilst others are catching up. Plus the mental and social impact.

Therollockingrogue · 08/09/2020 13:24

Karol Sikora Hmm

Bobbyandme · 08/09/2020 13:28

2 schools near me have already had cases. We are just a medium sized town. Hundreds of kids in isolation!

It's scary and I feel every school will have cases by next week locally. Seems to be spreading locally.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/09/2020 13:41

I think there will be a second lockdown.

We are definitely "losing" it now. Compliance has gone out the window really. I spend most shifts asking people to sort their mask out or distance in the shop.

I think whatever your stance on the mask, if we just got on with it properly they would have definitive proof one way or the other of effectiveness and who knows we could he free of them much sooner...

I'm hoping there isn't though. If only because I can't bear all the nastiness on face book at people who aren't isolating "right"

If only concern was as high on what they were meant to be doing...

Bobbyandme · 08/09/2020 14:04

So sorry to hear others have suffered like this.

I will definitely look into all options thankyou. I just want them to focus on my health more than anxiety as that will help fix that.

Has anyone ever had neck trouble that feels like squeezing up one side into the neck and head (starting on the shouldeR) the pain is currently not there but I'm feeling sickly and weak. Really weak. My visions not too bad today but yesterday it was bad!

Wondering what I can do to help it at home until help? Is painkillers going to help loosen it?

Thanks.

Bobbyandme · 08/09/2020 14:04

Aghhh wrong post sorry!!

kittensarecute · 08/09/2020 14:04

I won't be able to cope if there's a second lockdown. So I'm praying that there isn't.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/09/2020 14:13

There will be neither a second wave nor another lockdown

Chill out

viccat · 08/09/2020 14:18

I think a full national lockdown is less likely now.
Partly because the government will be really concerned about the economy and simply can't continue paying for a continued furlough etc.

But also partly because a lot of things have changed in the past 6 months - treatment for the most serious covid cases has improved so the NHS is less likely to be overwhelmed now. There is now a much better supply of PPE, the testing system is better (not perfect but better) and generally services and businesses too are better prepared.

I have no doubt that cases will definitely continue going up as we move through autumn and winter though, we are already seeing it.

movingonup20 · 08/09/2020 14:25

More likely to be localised lockdowns, such as in Bolton just announced. Though never sure how effective it is closing restaurants unless you literally stop anyone from leaving the city to eat elsewhere

Chloemol · 08/09/2020 14:32

I think it will be far more local lockdowns, but they need something in place to stop people travelling to the next town!

knittingaddict · 08/09/2020 14:42

There will be neither a second wave nor another lockdown

Chill out

You can no more say that than I can say that there will definitely be another wave.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/09/2020 14:47

Well there is the theory that this is the second wave.

Weren't some hospitals going back over admissions from last year due to reports of strange presentations of flu?

TheSeedsOfADream · 08/09/2020 14:52

I think there will be local lockdowns, rather than national ones and possibly stricter in keeping with what other countries did.

ThatDamnScientist · 08/09/2020 15:07

Honestly, I don't think an another lockdown will be implemented no matter how bad things get. If things end up back like they were in March/April we will still be expected to continue but with no household mixing (so pretty much as it is now).

Delatron · 08/09/2020 17:36

I also get confused when camping is described as a safer option. What sharing the toilets and showers constantly with others? Versus staying in private accommodation?
