Second wave and no lockdown. Possible?

Hi,

So I've been trying really hard to keep my head, try not to overthink and worry, but tbh, I'm starting to crack and I know I'm not alone.

It's looking like a second wave is coming and yes, bojo always said he "would not hesitate to put on the brakes" and have another full lockdown if it was needed, but does anyone actually think that will happen? Can our economy really handle another?!

If cases do continue to rise, but hospital admissions don't go crazy and the death rate stays "reasonably" low, so our NHS isn't overwhelmed, then isn't that really the bottom line/main criteria for another lockdown?

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, I'm just getting really scared at the prospect that we'll all be back to square one very soon.

My MH was pretty bad, as was my DM towards the end of the last one. My DD just went back to school today and it's heart breaking to think that the rug will be pulled from under her and all other dc before they've even really started Sad

What is anyone thinking?

Wrong thread!

@Whatwouldscullydo

Well there is the theory that this is the second wave.

Weren't some hospitals going back over admissions from last year due to reports of strange presentations of flu?

My friend is a nurse and she has said that this is a common opinion amongst her colleagues.

Interestingly I think I saw something on my news feed about a man dying in January being the first UK death ...

It disappeared now so will have to try and hunt for it but certainly one fir the naysayers who insist it wasnt here that early

Given that the country spent £210 billion on Covid over the past six months, I have no idea where the money for another six months like that comes from. At some point we have to accept that we literally don't have the money for certain things....so I just don't see how another national lockdown can happen

SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 09:50

@middleager

I'm more scared of the impact on our livelihoods and my children's welfare than I am of the virus.

Same here. The Govt should have supported children, funded schools. Mine are in their GCSE years and already classes are being sent home in our area.

This! My own DCs are primary-aged, but I have so much sympathy for the current generation of 16-18 year olds. We're fucking up their education, sucking the joy out of their lives, screwing the economy they will shortly be stepping into and loading them down with massive levels of government debt. I think we're actually asking that generation to make huge sacrifices given how little risk the virus poses to them & I wish we acknowledged that more

I couldn't agree more.

And call me daft but I have huge concerns about all this hand washing and hand gel and potential for effects on their immune system. Is it a bit like the user use if antibiotics? Will excessive use lead to resistant bacteria? A bit of dirt and exposure to germs helps build immune systems and keep kids healthier doesnt it?

And I also worry about ever increasing litter . It was bad enough before but now there are gloves and masks everywhere and even more cans and beer bottles where people are drinking outside. What is the state of the planet they have to grow up in gonna be.

I'm in a bit of a panic at the prospect today. I feel like I can't do the 'both working around a toddler that we can take out for a walk once a day' thing again, especially as I'm now (stupid me) pregnant. We got through it once but the thought of going back there now we've had a reminder of how much nicer life is with nursery, DH actually teaching kids rather than sending them endless emails, being able to see family and being able to do the odd activity or day out with DS so that we're not just in our house, of actually being happy... I know I'm being selfish and silly and that in the grand schemes of things it's not such a hardship and it might never happen, but I remember what it was like in April, working until midnight daily because DS couldn't be left unattended in the day (he's 2), DH and I both miserable, and I think about doing that heavily pregnant and I want to cry.

What are the government proposing to do regarding closing businesses in local lockdowns? If furlough ends next month ....but realistically there could/will continue to be local lockdowns, how many businesses can afford to shut for weeks, after the 6 months weve just had...? Will there be any financial incentive for businesses and work places to comply...?
I not saying they shouldn't comply and I know MN is full if people who earn 6 figure salaries and advocate having enough savings to live off for a year, but the reality is a LOT of people, and businesses live off really tight margins and would not be able to financially withstand a lockdown.

Whatwouldscullydo · 09/09/2020 10:23

Not selfish ir silly at all hard
Lockdown turned people into arseholes. I'm in no hurry to be exposed to that again.

I think fun was had exploiting workers. And I think fun was had by people suddenly given power and using it to make people chose between Cat food and soup for their third and final can.

If a second lockdown happens it won't be long til we are all flogged substandard shit at hiked up prices and fighting over pasta and flour cos they can do one better than last time.

MalbecLARGE · 09/09/2020 15:34

So it's sounding like most people believe it will just be a case of local lockdowns.

I do wonder if the government never had any intention of a second lockdown, as they know the economy couldn't handle another, but told us all that they wouldn't hesitate, simply to keep order and compliance.

Everyone saying the country can not afford another lockdown fails to realise how much it would cost the country if there was an uncontrolled virus sweeping the country. If hospitals were all full, if large swathes working age population were incapacitated. This would cost more than a controlled lockdown with furlough. Anything is possible, not likely but possible.

I think we’re still well below where we were in March but if cases continue to rise drastically over the next week/two weeks I wouldn’t be surprised to see restrictions put back in place.

I think we’ll stop short of a full lockdown again but I would expect to only have schools, work and essential shops open with the familiar restrictions on gatherings. The government might back off trying to get people back in offices too if they can wfh. Pret, Costa and Starbucks will just have to deal with it.
