Hi all,
Myself and both of my kids have caught a cold since yesterday, sore throat, coughing, and runny noses- no temperature. DD starts back at school on Monday, she should be we enough to go but have the tail end of cold symptoms, coughing and runny nose. Should I keep her off untill symptoms have completely gone? I'm guessing the school would probably send her home, Im not sure though

Coughing is a symptom of covid. No, you don't send her to school. You all isolate and get yourselves tested

I can't believe people are asking this.

Drowninginwashing · 05/09/2020 12:12

Sorry but the cough (and sore throat) would be enough in my opinion to need a test

Triangularbubble · 05/09/2020 12:18

You have one of the 3 main symptoms - a cough. You therefore all isolate and get a covid test for each of you then your whole household stays home until you get the results. You categorically do not send a coughing child to school without even testing.

Starting to think parents should have to pass an exam on basic Coronavirus precautions before allowing their children back to school.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 05/09/2020 12:19

@Dazzband my kids have been back at school nearly a month (Scotland) and a lot of kids have come down with a cold as you describe, runny nose, sore throat etc, schools sending kids home or parents keeping them off and testing, testing capacity over whelmed, no testing stations with availability for miles and miles.

Then letter sent out reminding people that only the main 3 symptoms were to be tested on, not just runny noses, sore throats or other symptoms that point to the common cold.

ParisianLady · 05/09/2020 12:20

You have a cough, one of the 3 main symptoms, so you isolate and get a test.

Really very simple. Can't believe that anyone wouldn't know this by now.

Keepdistance · 05/09/2020 12:21

Test

user1496146479 · 05/09/2020 12:24

Isolate, test. Cough is not to be ignored

Dazzband · 05/09/2020 12:26

I am fully aware the main symptom is a cough! However we all have caught a COLD, not coronavirus. This is the time colds are common, that being said, I will keep her off untill she's fully recovered. I think people will have to start using their common sense as a lot of people will be catching a cold around this time

Get a test!

You'll need to speak to the school about whether they should go in.

If you don't get a test you'll need to isolate anyway.

OverTheRainbow88 · 05/09/2020 12:27

Or you could just book a test and be certain it’s not covid?

How do you know it is a cold???? That would be funny if it wasn't totally idiotic.

It is a bit tiring having to explain to people after six months that Covid presents exactly like a cold for many people.

30not13 · 05/09/2020 12:29

And you 100% know it's not covid because how?

TheKeatingFive · 05/09/2020 12:29

Is the cough productive or not? If it is and they have a cold, then the cough is overwhelmingly likely to be a cold symptom not a CV symptom.

She's got a cough. You need to self isolate for the required time if you can't be arsed to get a test.

This is a myth
TheKeatingFive · 05/09/2020 12:31

There is a very snotty cold going round at the minute that involves a productive cough.

TheKeatingFive · 05/09/2020 12:31

This is a myth

Says who?

Littlescottiedog · 05/09/2020 12:33

The advice is to test if you have one of the 3 main symptoms. It doesn't say 'but only if you don't also have a cold'.

Get a test or self-isolate for 2 weeks. Anything else is selfish and unfair on all the other people you will come into contact with if you just go about your lives as normal, as you don't know it's NOT covid.

Mydarlingsleepthief · 05/09/2020 12:34

What’s a productive cough mean?

ChanceChanceChance · 05/09/2020 12:34

@TheKeatingFive

This is a myth

Says who?

Chris Whitty and everyone who wrote the NHS website?

The NHS guidance is get a test for a new cough. It doesn't say 'use your old wifely powers and assess the sputum'

Happy to be corrected if you can find an NHS website which backs you up.

ChanceChanceChance · 05/09/2020 12:35

@Mydarlingsleepthief

What’s a productive cough mean?
Coughing up snot.

But children more likely to have snot with Covid than adults anyway.

OP, I would write to the government if I were you and let them know you're the first person in the world who can diagnose covid (or not) simply through looking at someone.

Special skill that.

TheKeatingFive · 05/09/2020 12:35

What’s a productive cough mean?

You cough stuff up

jaffacakesareabiscuit · 05/09/2020 12:36

Are people honestly saying to get tested because they have a COLD?! As far as I was aware, a dry cough and temperature are the main symptoms....not a runny nose/productive cough, obvious cold symptoms?

I currently have a cold thanks to my son bringing it home from nursery. Snotty nose, occasional phlegmy cough, no temp, congestion. I haven't been tested and there has been no suggestion that I should. It's not Covid, it's a common cold exactly like every other cold I have ever had in my life.
