Back from abroad - straight in to school

DD went back to school today. There's a child in her class who just got back from Portugal yesterday. Been there for two months. I know they don't have to quarantine but surely it's a bit selfish going straight in to school after arriving back in the country? A lot of parents are concerned now. How likely is it that she could have brought back the virus? Isn't it a bit selfish considering a lot of people are quite worried right now?

She doesn't have to quarantine, so she hasn't. I feel sorry for her having a load of adults bitching about her.

CremeEggThief · 03/09/2020 18:36

YABU.🙄

Quartz2208 · 03/09/2020 18:38

Well no because it not in quarantine.

OP have you and the other parents spent the last 2 weeks sat in your home not mixing and not going out anywhere.

If you look at a comparison the two countries are fairly similar

whirlwindwallaby · 03/09/2020 18:38

What if they had been staying in a UK hot spot with grandparents for childcare?

Keepdistance · 03/09/2020 18:38

I agree op.
As anyway any plane/airport is pretty high risk.
Tbh though if you read mn lots are not isolating from quarantine countries.
Very self that is when the shielders are back in. And kids are being collected by gp etc

ChaChaCha2012 · 03/09/2020 18:38

They've followed the government rules. If you disagree with them take it up with your MP.

I trust no one else in the class has been to a higher rate area, including the many in the UK?

ChaChaCha2012 · 03/09/2020 18:40

As anyway any plane/airport is pretty high risk.

If you look at the test statistics, you'll find that is untrue.

Spacerader · 03/09/2020 18:40

Yabu. You dont have to quarantine so they aren't. Why would they.

Ilikewinter · 03/09/2020 18:41

No its perfectly acceptable for the child to go to school. I bet the parents who are now kicking off haven't been isolating for the last 2 months.

Cookerhood · 03/09/2020 18:43

Unless you are in Wales she doesn't have to quarantine

PinkPiranha11 · 03/09/2020 18:48

Kid has a right to go to school. They aren’t breaking any laws. Anyway Portugal has a lower infection rate than the city I live in. YABU OP.

Quartz2208 · 03/09/2020 18:50

@Keepdistance

Portugal isnt on the list

It has around 23 cases per 100000 Bolton has 70

Discobar · 03/09/2020 19:25

They have done absolutely nothing wrong

Realitea · 03/09/2020 19:35

I’m just saying they should’ve maybe come back a bit sooner than the day before. I would have.

MinnieMousse · 03/09/2020 19:38

This is really a case of MYOB. It's not up to random parents in the school playground to make up the rules! The family have not gone against any guidance and what you would have chosen to do differently is irrelevant.

itsgettingweird · 03/09/2020 19:49

Of course your unreasonable.

Portugal isn't a quarantined country. Therefore the risk being there isn't considered anymore than if you stayed here.

Leave the poor child alone.

lljkk · 03/09/2020 19:58

omg, OP's attitude is like parents at DC primary school. So glad DC are all too old now & there's no school gate gatherings for people to bitch at or for me to be dimly aware of. i wouldn't know who went on holiday, where they went, when they got back, much less which child belonged to which family. Don't you have something better to judge worry about?

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 03/09/2020 19:59

Course you would!

We came back from Turkey yesterday evening and went back to school today. We booked it last minute and had a brilliant holiday, it was lovely. I did think about the school implications but in terms of Turkey itself, we were outside 99.9% of the time and didn’t go to bars and clubs (we ate outside) and in terms of the flights, statistics show that the chances of catching Covid on a flight are tiny if you wear a mask throughout. TUI were very strict on our flight, probably as a result of the negative press...... So I think we are less of a risk than families where parents are in indoor workplaces everyday, or from lockdown areas or have been to pubs and parties etc - you are being unreasonable.

Sailingblue · 03/09/2020 20:03

I hope you feel good about yourself bitching about the child who has done nothing wrong. I suspect many of the class have been doing equally risky activities within the UK unless you’ve all been isolated at home. The family have not broken any rules or regulations.

Quartz2208 · 03/09/2020 20:13

@realitea have you been isolating for the past 2 weeks and done absolutely nothing that could have caused you to come into contact

She has done nothing wrong.

I am very glad not to be at your school

LockdownDowner · 03/09/2020 20:18

YABveryU

They have done nothing wrong!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/09/2020 20:33

YABU. They've done nothing wrong. It's your problem if you're scared, not theirs.

Bol87 · 03/09/2020 20:43

My kids cousins have just been to visit us for a couple days. We are just out of local lockdown but we have more cases per 100,000 than Portugal. We’ve been to parks, outdoor softplay, two cafes & swimming. Should he not go to school tomorrow just in case?!

Walkaround · 03/09/2020 22:19

@Realitea - have you also been policing who has been doing other risky activities, like eating in restaurants, having playdates, going to soft play or trampoline parks, sitting in buses and trains, going to the cinema, visiting family in other parts of the country, holidaying in the UK, going on taxi journeys, working in a factory, ignoring the social distancing guidelines, or do you just not understand risk properly?
