No social distancing in 6th form classrooms/common room

I know that there was an earlier thread on this that ran to 1000 messages and shut down, but ...

I'm sitting here with egg on my face, as through the summer I didn't believe my DS (16) telling me that in his (new) Y12, they wouldn't have to distance from the other pupils in sixth form or be spaced out within the classrooms. He said that things would be 'the same as normal', and I honestly thought he was talking rubbish.

He's just home from his first day and, sure enough, the WHOLE sixth form is classed as one bubble and there are no social distancing measures at all between the kids there apart from desks all facing the front. I'm not sure about teachers - will ask later, but I presume they aren't in the bubbles and have to keep apart.

I glanced at the earlier thread title (that was something along the lines of 'the govt are letting the public believe there will be SD in schools') and thought it was all a bit paranoid (without reading it). However, I now genuinely believe that photos of all the 'back to school' stories have been carefully curated to show kids standing/sitting at least a metre apart. I'm one of those who thinks that we just need to 'get on with it' now, regarding schools, but I do feel royally hoodwinked by that. It was very subtle ... (and now I have to apologise to DS for not believing him!!)

Stop trying to be pedantic, noble, it doesn't suit you. The kids aren't doing the 'social distancing' in schools. Surprise, surprise, said no one with a grain of sense. It doesn't work for very long, as this all shows, not an opinion, just what they do, no matter who doesn't like it.

tootyfruitypickle · 03/09/2020 20:54

@CallmeAngelina you still here??

Why wouldn't I be?

Benjispruce2 · 03/09/2020 20:56

There’s no space to spread out if the whole school is back!!

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2020 20:58

My disagreement with indea is an entirely academic one.

noblegiraffe · 03/09/2020 20:58

Stop trying to be pedantic, noble, it doesn't suit you. Confused I’m not sure that word means what you think it means.

But your post is just a longwinded U4T kids need to be kids blah get over yourselves blah.

InDeo's username is a Freemason motto. I hate not knowing what things mean, so googled it.

And they appear to be arguing with themselves.

A 'bubble' in a high school today. I wonder if Boris will be filmed visiting these bubbles.

This is just so wrong. There's so little educational benefit to this and so much pointless risk of school.closures and I'll health.

I just don't get it.

Are U4T Freemasons as well? Funny hand shakes and all that?
StaffAssociationRepresentative · 03/09/2020 21:40

@InDeoEstMeaFiducia

And preaching, lecturing, hectoring, attempting to shame or guilt, even direct punishment don't work on this, either.
Teachers have been on the receiving end of this treatment for a while. What makes you special?
Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2020 22:05

Oh, I knew that miles. Glaswegian upbringing.

No funny handshakes atm though.

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 03/09/2020 22:15

What is U4T? Why assume anyone who doesn't agree with you is that?

The motto, it's inscribed sometimes on the backs of 18th century gravestones very far from Glasgow.

We've been back at school for 3 weeks now. Very few shutdowns.

SaltyAndFresh · 03/09/2020 22:19

Come off it @InDeo.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 03/09/2020 22:45

@InDeoEstMeaFiducia - lol!

Given that schools haven’t suddenly trebled in size, social distancing is just not possible. The minute risk to DC and others is hugely outweighed by the huge benefits to education, health and the economy by schools opening.

IMO the sole focus now absolutely has to be on getting the economy back to normal as far as possible so that our DC don’t have any more of their future chances ruined.

We cannot allow a few cases to detract from the overall message of opening up and getting back to work and school. The media scaremongering is totally unnecessary and I think we may be getting to the stage where the government should stop reporting daily case figures to avoid parents becoming unnecessarily hysterical.

Have you been letting your teenager out to see friends...did you honestly think they were social distancing? Tons of articles on teenagers and young adults socialising with disregard to the social distancing rules...so honestly why get so het up about it in a school setting

Bluelinings · 04/09/2020 01:41

Other countries have managed to do social distancing in schools.

More teachers, more buildings, more tech, more plans.

Our teachers are planning for remote and class constantly in case of a lockdown, but this can’t be used for blended learning as in many other countries.

We can’t have much more space like many other countries.

Why?

Why do our kids deserve less. All the time not just now.

Bluelinings · 04/09/2020 01:41

And why do U4T think our children deserve less than children in other countries. U4U more like.

For the same reason the poster would be upset about no distancing at work despite seeing adults break the guidance in public?

My son has been seeing his girlfriend , plus two other friends socially distanced. Mostly outdoors which is much safer (he had 6 friends round in the garden and they sat 2 metres apart). He did also have two friends round last week. We had windows open and they kept a distance.

He’s very worried about returning to college on Monday.

My daughters first day was yesterday and she was appalled. She’s not happy at all.

You have it backwards. We should get “het up” precisely because they are doing this, so potentially bringing the virus into school, and putting other, more responsible teenagers and adults at risk.

lazylinguist · 04/09/2020 09:05

The kids aren't doing the 'social distancing' in schools.

Yes but not because it's 'against human nature' or any such twaddle. It's because they physically can't - there isn't room.

None of the teenagers I know have been breaking social distancing rules outside school. Dd certainly hasn't, and some of her friends haven't even been seeing friends within the guidelines because they or their parents are being so cautious.

Well we could do blended learning, but parents largely don't seem to want that because it messes with them going to work. How have other countries managed to magic up more buildings? We certainly couldn't just magic up more teachers - few enough people want to do the job these days already, and the current situation isn't exactly going to make it a more attractive prospect!

HelloMissus · 04/09/2020 09:18

Parents wanting to go to work so they can house and feed their kids.

The absolute fucking brass neck of them.
