How many tests /isolations do you think you will need by half term?

Keepdistance · 31/08/2020 15:49

In April dd2 had a temp by the saturday after half term

By Apr we would have had about 5 tests as a family

In 2019 sept to dec
We would again have had at least 5.

Also people tend not to get symtoms on the same day so for eg in dec dd2 got a temp mon then by thurs i had a fever then dd2 a cough. So even if dd2 tested neg so could have gone back by thurs then i would have to get tested and us all be back isolating. And potentially 4 trips to testing centres
The gov will run out of tests and bubbles will continue.

I can understand kids not getting temps but would think many get a cough at the end of a normal cold?

One of mine does sometimes, one has never had a cough that I can remember (she’s 5)

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2020 07:32

@MillieEpple

ineedaholidaynow - it makes sense. Children may not pass covid on to teachers but they sure as hell pass on normal coughs and cold. Sending a child in with any contagious virus that has a temp and cough will mean teachers will end up with time off and having to test. Normally they just work through. People need to be really responsible with this to keep schools open.
This ^

Teachers are well known for working through.

Take a paracetamol, plaster on the game face - off you go!

But this year they can't. They can't because they must also follow guidance and risk assessments.

Fever = test

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2020 07:36

Keep I had a temperature when I had a UTI. Told GP on phone uti symptoms and then temp. They never mentioned testing. But grime sample showed infection. I also went into school to work like that.

I think where it's obviously not Covid it's fine.

The ear infection may be a little more close to the edge because it's URT and that's where Covid originally manifests.

So school back tomorrow and that i know of
2 kids with colds
3 -6 kids isolating (incl siblings) waiting for tests
Out of 400 of so school.

I honestly think this is unworkable. (And that people possibly havent been SD). Some will have been in holiday clubs etc.
Some kids maybe those with a 'sicky' child or large family will be off frequently with no online provision waiting for test results.
My elfest did a whole year with no days off. But will likely miss loads this year.

Will asthma meds stop the postnasal after cold cough?

Due back today to teach.

I have a cold with a slight cough so went to be tested and am now off until the result comes back at the very least.

It's going to be a looong year!!

Alpacinoseyes · 01/09/2020 22:39

Loads. September is usually a lovely month.
I think schools will be OK and the figures will lull us into a false sense of security. Then after October half term, more holidays and mixing, bam.

We will be hit, the usual bugs, moist air, coughs, cold to go out in....

Vinoonasunnyday · 02/09/2020 09:12

Cold and a slight cough are not grounds for testing

This is why London area has run out of tests!

Persistent cough - persistent being the key word

Our school has been back for just over a week. I know a couple who are self isolating awaiting test results. Yes it’s going to be a tough term, and people will be isolating on and off. What do you think would be a better solution?
Kaktus · 02/09/2020 09:24

Our school has prepared weekly work packs based on the topics covered in class for those self isolating.

You were previously advising people not to get tested if they had a runny nose and temperature.

Do you now accept that you have been giving out the wrong information?

Any type of temperature requires a test or 14 days household isolation.

It may not be common sense in your eyes but it is the rules we have to follow if we want to keep schools open and reduce the spread of the virus.

It may be that the demand is to great on the testing capacity and rules may be changed. But we are not there yet.

So telling people to use their common sense - well can you please practice what you preach and not send child to school with a temperature in any shape or form.

Vinoonasunnyday · 02/09/2020 09:46

A temperature alone requires test as does persistent cough alone

Temp and a cold does not because guess what .... it’s a cold! Covid typically does not present as a cold 🙈

This is why less than 1% covid tests are positive because idiots get one at the drop of a hat

And now people can’t get one for miles do people who actually should test won’t bother!

Timeforanotherusername · 02/09/2020 09:55

I give up.

You are dangerous and I hope you ignorance does not lead to someone dying.

Please please read the advice.

It DOES NOT say if you also have a runny nose then you don't need a test.

Yes it may be just a cold, but it is possible to have more than 1 virus at a time!

Vinoonasunnyday · 02/09/2020 09:56

Actually guidance everywhere says do not test for a runny nose

You clearly have anxiety issues it’s not normal

Timeforanotherusername · 02/09/2020 09:58

Yes, the advice is not to get tested for a runny nose only.

Where have I said otherwise?

But any temperature and a test is required.

Vinoonasunnyday · 02/09/2020 10:01

You keep sprouting ott guidance

No one in the real world would do that - purely on mumewet where you can see people are unnaturally anxious about it

I was in work yesterday with 3 people visibly unwell

Not going to run and hide given there are only 4 active cases in 200,000 and I’m in out break area

Why would the default be covid - it’s paranoia that’s all

People need to stop scaremongering

Hardly anyone is dying

Fine something else to worry about

ineedaholidaynow · 02/09/2020 10:02

Should we be concerned that Vinoonasunnyday is a teacher

Kaktus · 02/09/2020 10:05

Although I’m on the more relaxed side in terms of Covid, the guidance is clear. If you have a temperature, you must get a test. The guidance doesn’t say ‘if your temperature is accompanied by a snotty nose there’s no need to test’. Temperature = test.
Snotty nose with no temperature = no test.

Timeforanotherusername · 02/09/2020 10:07

So following guidelines is scaremongering.

Guidelines that are similar world over!

You need to stop being so selfish and realise we all have to step up and take responsibility for your actions.

I want schools to stay open and I want us to have as many freedoms as we can, and have a life as close to normal as possible. I don't want another lockdown.

I can't comprehend why people can't understand the basics here.

People are not dying because not many people have the virus at the moment and its been summer.

But send your child to school with a runny nose and a temperature and it turns out the temperature was actually as a result of coronavirus, then you will be responsible for putting others at risk.

We are not living in normal

randomsabreuse · 02/09/2020 10:41

P1 in a neighbouring school are out for 2 weeks because a cough was Covid. 2 weeks off when they're just settling in...

DD had temp plus snotty cough (not continuous), tested negative, loads of colds around. DS has snots with an occasional cough, haven't tested him as for once he hasn't got a temp with the cold!

We were all pretty blasé but getting tested because we "should" until that news came out. School gate gossip suggests that the mum of the child with the positive test wasn't sure that the test was necessary - temp just above the cut off, cough not that bad...
on better

IncidentsandAccidents · 02/09/2020 10:43

Just wanted to echo previous posters - we will definitely be getting tested if any of us has a cough or temperature. The guidelines are simple and do not say you can forget about it if you have a runny nose! It's so important that we do this to keep everyone safe and give schools the best chance of staying open.

Jagoda · 02/09/2020 10:51

Aside from the fact that the guidelines clearly state that you should get a test (whilst isolating) if you have a temp, new continuous cough etc, even if you don't have covid, you shouldn't be sending snotty virus ridden kids into school.

If child A has a cough and cold which is proven not be covid, but they are sent to school and spread it about, then half the school is going to end up being off whilst waiting for tests.

Those who dose their kids up with calpol and let them spread their germs regardless are very selfish.

Ignoring the argument above I think you are right OP we have isolated since yesterday walk -in test this morning as ds2 has had high temp for 24 hours and ds1 is supposed to be back at school tommorrow (obviously won't be if ds2 test comes back positive )

I saw three other parents with clearly similar age groupings in the test centre and the guy at the end you hand your test to said there had been an increase in the last week. Either my area is heading for a spike which is possible but it is frustrating ds1 is desperate to get back to school and we are down to the wire test occurred at 9am this morning (well 9.15 ) and hes due at school at 9am tommorrow. Obviously no negative result then no attendance but if this happens everytime one of them spikes with a temp then it's going to be really disruptive.

I completely understand why I really do and we would not break guidelines but I feel so bad for the DC.

Flagsfiend · 02/09/2020 19:54

@Shinyletsbebadguys I had a test yesterday late afternoon and got the result before 9 this morning. So you hopefully will get your result tonight at some point.
