Teachers could be superspreaders due to lack of mitigation measures admits Matt Hancock

Ok, he didn’t say it outright, but he admitted that what was hoped to stop coronavirus spreading in schools was teachers maintaining 2m distance from pupils at all times.

Teachers have been saying for months that this is impossible due to small classrooms where there just isn’t enough space to be 2m away from your front row of students. It’s also impossible to support a child from 2m away when you need to see what they are doing, but literally zero thought has been given to this.

But that’s it. That’s all the protection that will be given to teachers - an impossible directive to social distance.

Matt Hancock said this morning “The principle is that we want to keep certain teachers socially distanced from the pupils because there are all sorts of circumstances where a teacher might need to teach classes that are in different bubbles within the school.”

Secondary teachers will routinely be teaching all year groups in a school. Supply teachers will be going between schools.

“My answer to you is that it is the social distancing between the teacher and pupils which is the goal here, but our total focus is on getting the schools back”

Getting the schools back. Not getting them back safely. Not ensuring that they stay open and that staff and pupils stay safe.

I think we need actions not words.
Teachers should tweet matt with pics of their set up and ask him how he would sd in that set up.
Or tweet staff rooms, staff offices etc.

Part time rota at least for secondary pupils would have been the obvious solution with pupils taught from home.

Spiderseason · 31/08/2020 09:00

I'm more concerned about secondary than primary at the moment.
Dd2 is in a bubble of at least 200 pupils and no assurances that they will get on line if there is another lock down.

I wonder, all the schools and teachers who struggled, can't compulsory visits take place from settings that did make it work?

SaltyAndFresh · 31/08/2020 09:02

@Uhoh2020

Will teachers get regular testing like some health care workers are? Would teachers even want to be tested regular? i believe the tests can be quite unpleasant
Teachers will not get any more testing than the general public. Tests are absolutely fine if slightly unpleasant. The whole family has one on Saturday.

Can I also pre-empt any major unpleasantness by asking you to think carefully about what you say on here, given your Holocaust comment yesterday?

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2020 09:08

Any teacher tweeting Matt with pictures of their classroom would most likely get in a lot of trouble.

OP posts:
mrshoho · 31/08/2020 09:14

There'll be a fair few students instagramming (I hope) to show the real picture.

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2020 09:15

@noblegiraffe

Any teacher tweeting Matt with pictures of their classroom would most likely get in a lot of trouble.
And therein lies the problem doesn't it?

Government can negate unions and teachers and post false pictures online and produce any propaganda they like.

Yet when the people on the front line of this try to uncover the truth it's career suicide.

I'm sure I remember NHS staff also being threatened with keeping off the media and telling the truth?
Within two weeks of children going back to school in Florida, 9000 children were diagnosed with covid and 600 were hospitalised.

www.newsweek.com/nearly-9000-florida-children-diagnosed-coronavirus-two-weeks-schools-reopen-1527587?fbclid=IwAR2bcky7xoCyDCWqXs9x4jV2uJqGmg4nFi-ntepdU5aqYRpkyMuiOooLoxM
That's incorrect.

9000 children tested positive in the space of two weeks, that's true enough - but 600 children have been admitted to the hospital while positive for C19 in Florida, ever - not during the past two weeks.

All people are tested for C19 when they're admitted to the hospital, if they're there for a hip replacement or C19 they're down as a C19 hospital statistic.

6 million children are admitted to the hospital every year in the US, so you can assume it's about 330,000 a year in Florida, give or take. Assuming that all children who have tested positive for C19 while in the hospital are actually in the hospital for reasons related to C19 (this will not be true), then C19 represents less than 2/10 of 1% of overall paediatric admissions statewide.

Didn't the outbreak in Dundee with many more teachers being infected than pupils support this to some extent?
Did the Covid-19 spread through the staff room or is there another explanation?

walksen · 31/08/2020 11:14

Difficult to know as only symptomatic students were tested and due to their needs of would have been more difficult to test students.

You post despicable comments and have the audacity to complain when people pick you up on it?

But salty was completely right-your comment about gas chambers was vile. You should be picked up on it.

SaltyAndFresh · 31/08/2020 11:19

You open yourself up to minor annoyances when you say appalling things.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 11:23

I think you should all listen to @Uhoh2020.

She's very wise.

She was very liberal and helpful with her advice and opinions to me on a shielding thread recently. Heartwarming, it was.

walksen · 31/08/2020 11:24

"Go annoy somebody else"

I didn't see your comment but you obviously annoyed a lot of people yourself!

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2020 11:31

Flowers Miles, sorry you’ve had it too.

OP posts:
MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/08/2020 11:36

Thanks noble Wine

I have noticed definite crossover between tho posters attacking teachers, and the posters who think shielders are 'entitled'. (I can't roll my eyes hard enough at that one).

Uhoh2020 · 31/08/2020 11:37

Thanks @MilesJuppIsMyBitch
Ok my comments yesterday was wrong i apologise I vould have used a different comparison im sure im not the only person in the world who has said something inappropriate at times. There's been some things others have said that I've found quite offensive. Im sorry.
And the reason I told @SaltyAndFresh to go annoy someone else is because any thread I comment on shes there picking away at it not just this one or yesterday's its getting boring now. If I said the sky was blue she'd argue it wasn't.
However back to this thread......I just asked a simple question about testing teachers

Yabberdabbado · 31/08/2020 11:43

It's all about the money fuck the safety of staff and pupils and their families. You have to have some losses for gains according to this govt. 😠

noblegiraffe · 31/08/2020 11:45

I don’t think I can cope with the lack of self awareness of assuming Miles was genuine.

Or was it more trolling?

My brain is just too wtf.

OP posts:
SaltyAndFresh · 31/08/2020 11:46

Is that meant to be an apology to me? You addressed me directly in that comment.

I'm challenging any misinformed comments on back to school threads. You must just make a lot of them because I hadn't especially noticed that I was annoying you in particular.

RamblingRam · 31/08/2020 11:49

@noblegiraffe
It is perfectly clear you just don't want to be a teacher.
For years on here you have moaned about the state of education, whichever education secretary, pupils, parents etc. Coronavirus seems to have pushed you over the edge.
Honestly just move on teaching just isn't for you anymore. It's not a failure to say I'm done with this and find happiness everywhere

TheHoneyBadger · 31/08/2020 11:54

Err good teachers will moan about conditions in schools and lack of funding etc because they give a shit about education. Do you think all doctors moaning about underfunding in the nhs should also just quit?

How ridiculous! Would you rather a teacher who cares and is passionate about education or one who just turns up and goes through the motions? I know who I would rather teach my children! Teachers can not win. There were posts on MN asking why teachers are only now moaning about the facilities as they had no clue as to the state of our schools. Keep posting Noble!
